One of my new acquisitions, this is the skull of a very large male gray wolf (Canis lupus). He does not have a name, but I'm enthusiastically open to suggestions! (Edit: Got it! He's Grond. Thanks, crows_warning and tripleransom!)
I think the whole idea of being a beta as bad came about around the point that the phrase "if you're not the lead dog the view never changes" and similar attitudes started to become prevalent. Which is to say, everyone was pushing for control and being in charge- and if you were content with anything less, that meant you were inferior.
I always counter with "And if everyone tries to pull the sled in their own direction, you get nowhere." The idea that some are born to lead and some born to follow hasn't exactly found a welcome in our society, even if it is the truth.
Talking about alphas and betas and omegas - have you read Patricia Briggs' werewolf novel Cry Wolf? She goes into that and creates a rather complex werewolf society.
The other three books that salzara_tirwen mentioned are set in the same 'verse as cry Wolf and feature Mercy Thompson, a coyote shifter raised by werewolves. I love this expanding and interrelated 'verse which also includes vampires and the fae. Hope you get around to reading whichever book you have soon and that you'll like it so much you'll seek out the others.

Now you've given me name-craze, though, so I'm not responsible for the presence of a Baby-Name-Book abundance here, okay?
Dace, Dirk (though maybe better for a small male) Gael, Jesse, Joel...
This could go on all day. Stopping!
