Yeah, I haven't updated this in a while. I've been reading and all, but someone turned me onto Library Thing, and frankly, it's way closer to what I was looking for in the first place. So I guess this is pretty much defunct for the forseeable future.

I love reading at the beach. Actually, I think I just love being at the beach when it's possible to read (i.e., not dark, not raining, and not insanely windy). I also love "beach reading" -- fun, fluffy, non-taxing novels. They tend to be chicklit, but don't have to be. Six hundred pages. Large ones. It was a bit much, but I made it. Had to renew my copy twice (OK, so i didn't actually start it til the first expiration date was almost upon me). Still, I finished Margaret George's Helen of Troy. It was pretty good, and I'd consider reading one of her other works, but honestly, the war in Troy went on forever.

Really, is it possible that I haven't read anything lately? I've been putting off Helen of Troy (it's really big! and I'm going to the beach this weekend, so I've been telling myself that i can just read it there), but I started it last night, and although I'm only about 15pp in (if you count the prologue), I think it's going to be pretty good. Much waiting around in airports this weekend. Jennifer Sturman, The Jinx. Should've been reading stuff for work instead, but I have no discipline. Next up is Helen of Troy, but it may be a while before I get started.

Slowly but surely.... actually, it was Friday Night Lights that held me back. It's good, but I didn't love it -- you've pretty much got the idea in the first third of the book, and then there are a couple of pretty slow chapters about West Texas and the wild '80s. The End of California was pretty good -- very good for a random selection, I'd say. Steve Yarbrough is the author, by the way. I've already received the next fun stuff on my list: another Marne Davis Kellogg, and another Jennifer Sturman. I figured the first ones I'd read by those two kept coming back to me, so I'd try more. After sneaking in another Nancy Martin mystery (Have Your Cake and Kill Him Too) on the side, I finally finished Vanity Fair, *whew*. That was one long slog... I think today's editors could (and would) slice off 200 pages, easy. I admit that I started skimming parts toward the end, but I'm pretty sure I didn't miss anything plot-relevant. ( Read more... )
