She's standing so close to you now. So close that you could kiss her if you wanted to. Which you do.

You'd only have to move your fingers a fraction and they'd brush her hip. Then, if you got a little bolder, you could slide your open palm over the delicate curve. (Your hand would span her narrow hip, you think with pleasure.) Maybe you'd even have the courage to slip your hand between the hem of her little purple top and the low waistband of her pants, stroking the creamy smoothness of her skin as you slide your hand into the small of her back. The slightest pressure would bring her body flush against yours; you shiver just imagining how it would be if her small hands grazed the bare skin of your chest en route to twine around your neck or play with your hair as you deepen the kiss...

That is, if you kiss her at all. Which, despite your very vivid imagination, you make no move to do. You never did when you knew her before, even though your imagination was no less active (in fact, you imagined a lot more, in graphic detail, than the kisses you're thinking about now) and once or twice you thought you might, possibly, have had the chance. But back then you were Gabriel Gray, a suicidal, virgin watchmaker, and why would a woman as sweet and smart and sexy and special as Elle want someone like you to kiss her? (Much less press her onto the narrow mattress of the bed in which you've always slept alone, and make love to her all night.)

Now you're Gabriel again -- or trying to be. And while you no longer wish for death, you're still a virgin. (Maya had your kisses, but you didn't need to go any further to get what you wanted from her.)

Despite how it might look, your inexperience isn't what's holding you back from kissing Elle. You're close enough to kiss her, but after everything you've been through with her, then and now, you don't need to kiss her to feel close to her.

And that’s special.
