"IN THE KEYS"
Sue/Donovan (OC)

She had been looking to snoop through that room for a while now, only the opportunity had always been dashed by one thing, one person: Brad, the pianist. Any time when she’d believed her moment was finally there, she’d turn, and there he would be, staring back at her. She’d give out something of a growl and then she’d retreat.

Then the previous day, she’d overheard Schuester in the teachers’ lounge: Piano Man was out sick. She didn’t know whether to believe it or not at first, and she’d peeked into Glee practice that afternoon: No sign of him. There was her chance: the next day.

She poked her head in, looked about… no one. She walked in further, slowly but surely growing in the confidence she was finally…

One soft note, and then a deeper one… She spun around, expecting to find Ghastly Tinkles under the weather, or Schue, or… But, no: It was a stranger. The man sat at the piano, looking back at her.

“Any requests?” he gave an open smile; she frowned, straightening.

“And you are…” He stood, extending his hand across the piano.

“Donovan Wells.” After a beat, she cautiously shook his hand.

“And you are…” she repeated.

“I’m filling in for the accompanist,” he revealed. “Let me guess, Sue Sylvester?” he stood. She nodded, confused. “Yeah, he said to look out for the… glare in a tracksuit.”

“And… you are?” she maintained.

“And maybe someday she would speak new words to me,” he spoke dramatically, clasping his hands together. He dropped them as she stared back at him, thrown. “Doing a favor for an old friend from Glee Club, by lending out my hands.”

“Glee Club,” she shook her head. “Of course.”

“Yes, I hear you’re not too fond of it,” he pointed out. “It’s a shame, really. Will tells me you’re quite the hoofer.”

“Well…” she shrugged, unconsciously boosted by pride. She snapped out of it. “Enjoy your little stint here. Maybe it’ll open your eyes to the worthlessness you’ve been clinging to… Glee Club,” she clarified.

“Yes, I got it,” he smirked. She shook her head and turned to leave. “If I had to guess,” he called after her. She was almost at the door when she heard the first notes of ‘True Blue’ on the piano. She stopped and turned back to him. He kept on playing, looking at her with a grin. “I knew it,” he was almost cackling. “I have to say, I approve.”

“Ah, I see,” she nodded, like she’d just gotten the power back.

“Believe me, you don’t,” he shook his head, unphased, still playing.

“Well,” her eyes blinked up. “It’s not every day I see a fellow fan who’s not a lady or… ladylike.”

“You need to get out more,” he carried on playing.

“Is that an offer?” she went and asked. He stopped playing, thought.

“It wasn’t… but it could be.”

She watched him, trying to figure out what his deal was… what she found - or didn’t find - left her rattled… Not many could rightly claim to have done that, but he had, by looking genuinely interested… in her. She blinked.

“You know what, I don’t think w… you should be in here. But, I… I’ll turn a blind eye,” she bowed her head before making her exit.

Walking on down the hall, her cautious face showed more and more signs of buckling, and when it did, it showed frustration, fear, regret… Maybe it was easy for Schue and Ella and the others to treat this place like a singles’ mixer, but it was different with her, so much different. She needed time, and she just had to hope Donovan Wells had patience.

THE END
