"INSIDE & OUT"
Sue & Brittany
Sylvesters Series #13

It would come as a surprise to most people to know Sue Sylvester liked to cook breakfast. It was something she had discovered, taking care of her sister. And now she was sharing this with her daughter. It wasn’t always the same, bigger on the weekends.

“No microscopic bites this morning, please, I have a meeting with Figgins and then…” She stopped, noticing the way Brittany sat, hands in her lap, staring at her plate. “Hello?” she sat. Brittany looked up.

“Hi,” she replied.

“You know I’m not going to sit here and wait until you’re done, so you better start…”

“I’m not hungry,” Brittany cut her off. She frowned. She may have fed her the same way she did every last Cheerio when they were at McKinley, but at home she wasn’t nearly so restrictive. She still made sure she ate right, but not in a bottle.

She’d made the decision to let her daughter join the Cheerios for several reasons and under a few conditions. She wanted her to be part of this triumph of hers, and… well, she needed to keep an eye on her so she wouldn’t get in trouble for her mental deviations. She’d been nurturing that dream in her for years, with dance lessons, tagalongs to Cheerios practice…

Her primary condition in letting her join had been simple: if she was going to be one of them, then she would be one of them. No special treatments, she’d be handled all the same… That was what mattered, even more than the secret of her motherhood. She didn’t have a lot of her things she had wanted at that age. Now she could spend the rest of her life wondering if she blamed herself or the family who’d needed her, or she could allow her daughter the life so hoped for by girls her age… She could make her one of the Cheerios.

But then as much as she was trying to treat her all the same as the others, she’d bend the rules, here and there, sometimes even without realizing it. It had happened more than once that, in her routine removal of a random Cheerio, her finger would land on Brittany’s name… and slip to the one right underneath; it was not a safe place to be when it came to that list. Her eating being different, that was a noted change. She had had difficulty making up her mind, finding a solution… She couldn’t make her peace. In the end it became that much easier just not to think about it.

Sitting across from her now though… Her eyes couldn’t play innocent; her standards were different when it came to Brittany, why wouldn’t they? She was her daughter.

And there it was… her mind was trying to both treat her as the daughter she was, and as the typical high school cheerleader… It didn’t seem like it could be possible… But then maybe that was why she needed to break the rules, in some places, so they remembered what was image and what was real.

“I don’t want to hear it,” Sue finally spoke, putting on her authority voice. “You eat all that’s on your plate, clear?”

“Yes,” Brittany obeyed, picking up her fork. Sue watched her eat, sitting back in her chair. After a beat, she got up and got herself breakfast.

THE END
