Wow, lots happened this week. Ken had another transfusion on Monday, and tuesday he had an ultrasound of his liver to see what the spots were. Bad news on that one - the spots are metastasis of the kidney cancer. But, they are small, and the oncologist (seen today) thinks the current treatment will get rid of them. Well, after 48 hours of being poked, prodded, and cultured, they let Ken come home today. Never did figure out why he's losing the hemoglobin numbers so fast, because they couldn't find anything that was bleeding, and the rest of his blood counts were fine - even his white blood count, which should have been high if he had an infection going ( Read more... )

Ken may be able to come home saturday.  They think it's an infection.  more later.

The Oncologist admitted Ken directly into the hospital yesterday during Ken’s regular visit. Ken’s hemoglobin was 7 (normal is 14), his blood pressure an amazing 86/51 (Ken says 88, but I saw the read-out), he has a fever and chills, and is coughing (again) because when the ENT cauterized his nose on the 6th, she forbade him to use a sinus rinse ( Read more... )

So, Ken is at 5 weeks of hiccups and counting. Last visit to the Dr. on Thursday brought home new, even stronger anti-spasmodic type meds. Of the type that say "bla bla bla heavy duty problem bla, and also for persistent hiccups." today was a very long, stressful day. cancer sucks, and so do hiccups.

The cancer community, that is. Ken spent nine hours at the infusion center today, most of it getting a(nother) blood transfusion, since the hiccups pretty much ate through the one he had just over three weeks ago, not to mention it looks like the cancer is on the move again. This morning, I had such a bad headache I was worried it wasn’t just (another) migraine. I have never had a headache that felt so horrid that I couldn’t stand the sight of food, and couldn’t even lay down because that made it hurt even more.
