migraines hurt

This morning, I had such a bad headache I was worried it wasn’t just (another) migraine. I have never had a headache that felt so horrid that I couldn’t stand the sight of food, and couldn’t even lay down because that made it hurt even more. It was a two-fisted one too - part of it right between the eyes, and the other part starting at the back of my neck and working it’s way up the back of my head. I wasn’t even sure I was going to be able to walk back to the bedroom.

Of course, it’s the day I’m supposed to see the Dr. to follow up on my lab tests. Ken let me rest on his shoulder until I felt able to kind of lay down on my side with all my pillows propping me up. I was getting scared that it might be more than a headache, but apparently I dodged the bullet on it this time. Between that, some Tylenol (generic), and a cold pack on the back of my neck, after about an hour I was able to stand up. Still in no condition to do much else (so much for my shower this morning), and I needed to talk to the Dr., but that was a 35 mile drive away. So Ken drove me. Even though he’s been taking Vicodin for his back. I think it’s the first time he’s driven me anywhere for months, usually I’m the one doing the driving.

Dr. turned out to be what I expected. I need to follow a diabetic diet, and lose about 20 lbs., and in the meantime she gave me some pills (name escapes me) that are glu-something-or-other which should control the whatever it is that is too high and going higher, until I lose some weight and the numbers go back down. If I sound a bit vague, it’s mostly because at this point I can’t remember all the bits and pieces. I forgot to get a copy of the lab report as well, so I can’t go look.

Anyway, by the time I got done with the Dr., I was feeling well enough to drive, so we got a relatively quick lunch at Fuki Sushi, then headed to the pharmacist’s on the way home.

The real bummer is that Ian and I were going to go to the appointment just the two of us, and then go to a movie afterwards. That got shot all to hell with the migraine though. Even with the meds making it feel better, something told me that rapidly changing images and loud noises were not the thing I needed today. So we are going to go tomorrow after we get Ken settled into the infusion center.

Ken needs another blood transfusion for anemia, and his oncologist changed the meds he’s taking for his kidney cancer. This new one is an infusion, so he is going to start it along with the transfusion tomorrow, then will go back every week for the next 8 weeks for another dose. After that, more scans to see if the new drug is working and if so, we’ll be making a weekly trip to Mountain View until this new drug stops being effective. Such is the way kidney cancer goes. The drugs work well against the cancer for about a year, by which time the cancer has mutated enough to get around the drug, so you need to use a different one to keep ahead of the game.

Had a bit of luck getting the car filled with gas though - $4.039/gal for regular unleaded, and the place we went to has a wednesday “ladies day” where they pump the gas and clean your windshield for you. Actually turned out to be a really good deal - it was six cents cheaper per gallon than the next cheapest gas was, and a good 30 cents cheaper than some of the prices I saw. Still, at $4-plus/gal, it’s not a cheap fill-up.

But, for now I think it’s time to sleep - we have to be at the infusion center in Mountain View by 10am, which means we have to leave by 9am, and then it takes about 6 hours. I plan on doing a crock-pot for dinner, and I absolutely need to take a shower in the morning.
