when i first moved to troy i lived in apartments for 2 years. to get my laundry to the laundromat, that was between 1/2 to 1 mile from home depending on which apartment i was in, i would stuff everything into my huge internal frame backpack and set off. now this backpack could hold about 5000 cubic inches of clothing. i didn't do laundry too often so i sometimes needed to stuff another 2000 cubic inches of stuff into another backpack which i'd wear on the front. i'd get a lot of strange looks from RPI students as i hiked down 15th street fully laden with my washing. i always used the dryers at the laundromat (something i rarely do now that i do laundry at home) because wet laundry was just way too heavy to march through town with

I haven't precisely ever been car-free, in that someone I lived with has always had a car, but for five years I went to and from work, libraries, and occasionally the corner grocery with no cars or anything else, just myself. It builds up your arm strength, and cloth bags of all types are very very useful
