Jaejoong was startled. The alarm system had been activated. He ran to the security room and froze at the images on the screen.
The guards outside were fighting with armed men. One of his men laid in front of the open gate near some abandoned van. He dialled the police but the phone line was dead.
-Shit! Where did I left my cell phone?
The business man grabbed a gun and was about to join the fight outside when his vision caught what was happening inside the living room on another screen. Siwon was inside the house and chasing Taemin. Jaejoong couldn’t move. Siwon managed to catch Taemin, Mr. Jung helpless to do anything, and then he was moving upstairs while dragging the boy with him. It took another moment for Jaejoong to react, then he took off running.
…
Jaejoong was scared. He remembered how he had a panic attack the night Yunho attacked him. And how close to having others he had been since then. He desperately prayed that this time he would not have one. He couldn’t afford to. Not when he had no idea where everyone was and Siwon was hot on his heels. His chest hurt as he tried hard to control his breathing and his heart rate. Running as fast as he could, he turned into the room’s corridor. He tripped on his own feet. “Get up! Get up! Go! Run!”
Instead of going to his own room, he hid himself inside the room where he had initially kept Yunho. He grabbed tighter the gun in his shaking hands. “I will kill that bastard if he approaches me.”
Siwon found him on the surveillance cameras. Laughing, he dragged Taemin with him, gun ready.
Outside the room, he forced the young boy to be in front of him and opened the door.
…
The Captain arrived at Top’s mansion. The few men stationed outside had looked at the police car and hadn’t even bothered to stop him so the Captain was soon knocking at the door.
A beautiful blond woman answered the door with a smile, a small little girl on her arms while another little boy, maybe five years old, ran around laughing with too huge Sherman Shepherds giving chase.
-Hello?
-Mrs. Choi, is your husband at home? I’d like to speak with him. My name is Jung Ji-Hoon, police Captain.
-Sure, I guess. As long as you don’t mind that Seung-hyun continues taking care of the barbecue.
-Off course, madam.
-This way, he’s at the back garden.
The Captain found himself being led into a small party. His chances of getting anything out of Top slowly decreasing as he recognized some of the guests. If these people said Top had been home all morning, there would be nothing he could do.
-Baby, there’s someone here to see you.
-What is it blondie? I thought you said I’m grounded here.
-Oh, you still are.
With that, the blond woman turned around with a wave of her hand. The little boy, who was now insistently tugging one of the dog’s ears, laughed and pulled Captain’s Rain pants to whisper in his ear.
-Mommy is upset with Daddy because he let us have chocolates and cookies for lunch.
Top approached the Captain with a smile, shaking his hand in greeting.
-Captain, I haven’t seen you in a while. How are you? Oh, and please excuse my wife. Cheryl is a little annoyed with me. Married life has these things. As for you, young man, what have I told you about pulling the dog’s ears?
-But he’s been trying to steal burgers.
Both Top and the Captain stared at the two peacefully sitting dogs.
-Really? I have a solution for that. I give you one big burger and some bones for them. How about it?
-Yes!
-Ok, off you go.
-Cute kid.
-Thank you. Now, what can I do for you, Captain?
-Park Ri Ho.
-He’s a club owner, isn’t he? But his businesses are in a different neighbourhood than where I own my clubs. How can I possibly help you?
-He’s dead.
-Well, that’s unfortunate, although it might help me win a few new clients if his clubs get closed down. How did he die that it was necessary to involve the police Captain himself?
The Captain did his best to get something out of Top but the man remained perfectly composed all the time, never letting anything slip. Rain was sure that the man in front of him playing the perfect host and family man was responsible for what he’d seen at the club. How to prove it?
-Seung-hyun, why do I smell burned meat? - Asked Top’s wife, approaching unexpectedly.
-Cheryl, darling, it’s not burned. It’s well done.
-Oh, seriously…
The younger police cop that had accompanied Rain inside the house muffled a laugh. Rain decided to just leave. Even the little boy’s words suggested that Top had stayed at home all morning. The man was just too good at covering his tracks and had more than enough efficient men to carry out his orders.
-Well, I’ll take my leave. Thank you anyway.
-Sorry I couldn’t be of any more help, Captain. - Said Top before turning his attention back to the barbecue.
-I’ll walk you, Captain. Darling? - Said Cheryl.
-Yes, blondie?
-Now it really is burning.
-What? Oh, shit!
-Choi Seung-hyun!
-The kids are way over there! They didn't heard me, I swear.
The younger cop ended up coughing to cover up his laughing. When they were already outside, after saying their goodbyes to Top’s wife, the young man turned to his Captain.
-Poor woman. She probably has no idea who she’s married to.
-You have no idea how to do your basic work!
The younger cop stared at Rain, wondering why he was suddenly being hit with one of the sudden moods that gave the Captain his nickname.
-Have you read the file on Top and his wife? She used to be an assassin for hire, working for bad guys all over the place, accepting contracts to kill other bad guys. In fact, word has it that is how they met. She got hired to kill Top but decided to kill the other guy instead and keep him for a husband.
-She… what?
-Yes, the pretty blond with the gorgeous eyes, kind smile and the little children calling her Mommy is rumoured to sometimes still accept killing contracts if she doesn’t like the target.
-Fuck!
-Shut up and get in! We need to get back to the club and go over whatever evidence was left behind. And get me the team sent after Siwon to see if they have him already and also Jung Il Woo. It’s about time they finish gathering all the scum.
-Yes, Sir.
…
-Well done. Well done indeed.
-Come on, blondie. Everyone has already a full stomach anyway. Please? Don't be mad at me. Give me a smile. Come on. You know I love you.
-Easy, tiger. That smile and those eyes of yours don't save you all the time. Behave yourself. You know, I wasn’t expecting the cops to come here.
-I guess the Captain was a little offended at how well wrapped his present was. But he’s a practical man, you know? He goes more by the spirit of the law than the actual written words. That’s what makes him a good Captain and someone to avoid as well.
-Well, leave that ruined meat and let’s go talk somewhere more quiet.
As soon as they entered their own room, Top hugged Cheryl and let his guard down.
-I’m exhausted.
-How bad was it?
-My line of business is a cruel one. Perhaps more than yours used to be. At least you only ever had to get rid of nasty people. Me? I earn most of my money from illegal gambling, stripers and prostitution. A conscience has to be left behind or you don’t succeed. But these were just kids… Some were so young.
-Did you shoot everybody?
-We let some off the hook, the ones the kids said tried to help them. They’ll be kept under close watch. And be punished for not alerting me. Know how I like to keep a file on my biggest clients and some useful blackmail material? Ri Ho had the same. It will now help the cops arrest a lot of clients. I saved a couple files to take care of them myself, they are the kind of men that the cops wouldn’t be able to reach even with all the hard evidence in this world.
-Need help with that?
-I thought I already told you no more hit jobs.
-But baby, I’m the best.
-Those targets are too big. I won’t let you risk going after them. We’ll hire outside. However, I do have a few smaller targets that will fly under the police radar and make life much easier for a lot of these kids. Just in case the social workers think they were kidnaped from their parents.
-You mean…
-Way too many young kids. That high number should have at least a couple missing kids’ reports. Ri Ho tracked down parents or caretakers and offered to rent the kids services. Services that the kids were already providing or about to. That’s why they were at the club. Some weren’t there today since it was their “days off”. But I’ve got all those files. Too many sick people for the cops and social services to deal with. And just too hard to deal with them by the book. It’s much easier when you don’t have to obey the law.
-So I should go clean my guns?
-Cheryl…
…
Changmin was driving as fast as he could. Next to him Junsu kept trying to call Jaejoong or Yunho.
They had alerted the cops to what was going on. Jung Il Woo and Lee Min Ho were right behind them while the others stayed behind to make sure they had caught everyone.Min Ho called the Captain who ordered the teams at Siwon’s office and house to redirect immediately to Jaejoong’s house.
Inside the mansion, Yunho hesitated for a second as his phone rang. He picked it up while he decided to take the extra seconds to put his father back on his chair.
-Yunho?
-Get your ass back at the house now! Siwon’s here.
The cop then handed his phone to his father and with his gun ready, went carefully up the stairs.
-Hello?
-Mr. Jung? Where’s Yunho? God, what happened?
-I don’t know. I think there was shots outside, we didn’t notice them. Then Siwon was inside the house, he caught Taemin and must have gone after Jaejoong as well. Junsu, how far away are you guys?
-We’ll be there soon. Mr. Jung, can you reach the control room? There’s an elevator near the kitchen.
-I know, I used it today. I’m on my way. Please hurry up. That man is insane.
…
Jaejoong had his gun ready. As soon as he heard noises outside the door he raised his hand and aimed the gun.
-Hi, darling. Remember me? Did you miss me?
-Release him!
-Ah, no. I have such sweet plans for this delicious young thing. But you know, I kind of miss you. What do you say? Don’t you miss me?
-Let him go!
-Nah, he’s a tiny little thing but he makes a good shield. Speaking of tiny, look just how big my hands seem against his tummy.
-Stop that! Don’t touch him!
-Put your gun down or I will shoot you, precious.
He moved to where a chain was forgotten still hooked on the wall. Using it to wrap around the boy, he kept using him as a shield. Siwon smiled noticing the length on the chain. Just perfect for him to reach near Jaejoong with Taemin still in front of him.
Jaejoong tried desperately to find a clear shot. He knew Junsu would have succeeded but he couldn’t get the right angle. And to his horror, Siwon was getting nearer while still blocking his exit out of the room.
…
With a deep breath, Jaejoong put the gun down. Obviously at the moment it was useless. He prayed that someone would arrive soon and that he could stall Siwon time enough.
The lawyer smiled another of his cold smiles when he thought the man in front of him was surrendering. With a kick he made sure to get the gun away from Jaejoong’s reach. He ignored the trembling boy in his arms, pushing him away in the bed’s direction and tried to grab the business man.
Jaejoong was prepared. He hit Siwon’s hand, successfully knocking the gun away. He even had time to punch the lawyer’s stomach before the man started fighting back.
Taemin, face wet with tears and body trembling in fear, forced himself to react and to try and get one of the guns but he couldn’t see where they had fallen to. The boy pulled at the chains. They were too tight. He frantically returned to his search for a gun.
Siwon had been caught by surprise but now he was the one surprising Jaejoong with his fight skills. Unlike the business man and his guards, he had no training in any martial art. However, he made up for it in brute strength and the desire to hurt.
Jaejoong had no time to think, he could only react and fight, trying his best to overpower Siwon or at least stall him. Somewhere on the back of his mind, he was able to call the training he had done with Yunho and something the cop had told him recently: “You can hold your own in a fight. I should know. I’ve experienced it. Your panic attacks don’t make you weak or in need of rescue, you know? And you are not controlled by them either which just makes me marvel at how strong you can be.”
He held on to that and the anger he felt towards Siwon. The business man was determined to somehow finish everything that day.
The lawyer was getting more and more annoyed at how long the fight was taking. He specially hated how he had to defend himself against Jaejoong’s hits. The business man was just a slim thing. With a deliciously toned body, granted, but a slim man who shouldn’t be this strong or hard to win. More and more annoyed, Siwon decided to simply move to take what he wanted.
Jaejoong ducked a punch and was already aiming a punch of his own when Siwon managed to grab one of his arms and pull him. He kicked the man’s legs but was thrown off balance when suddenly a mouth was over his own mouth.
In that moment, much as Jaejoong struggled with his legs and free arm, much as he tried biting Siwon’s mouth, he felt how inevitably his fear won him over, how his heart went crazy inside his chest, how his brain and body started to shut down.
…
Yunho went into the control room first. If the cameras were still working it would tell him where Siwon was. The images he saw on the screen made his blood boil in his veins. He had never felt such rage in his entire life.
…
Yunho ran into the room barely using is brain, all he could see was Siwon forcing himself on Jaejoong. He pulled the lawyer off Jaejoong and started to punch him.
-How dare you? You filthy animal!
The cop advanced on the lawyer, catching him by his collar and pulling his face up close.
-I’m going to kill you. What do you think you were doing?
Siwon punched Yunho back and in a moment of clarity tried to gain control of the gun in the cop’s holster. It was too late when Yunho realised he had lost the perfect moment to subdue Siwon because of his rage attack. All he could do was minimize the damage and make sure the gun was out of Siwon’s reach. In the struggle the gun fell somewhere on the floor.
Taemin eagerly followed the gun’s fall and retrieved it from the floor immediately but looked unsure at it, not knowing what to do with it. He looked in Jaejoong’s direction but the business man seemed to be in a daze.
-Oh, fuck! Now what? Yunho!
The boy tried to warn Yunho that he had the gun, however both men looked his way and he screamed, hurrying to get as far away as possible.
Siwon was angry, angrier than before. If Yunho was here already, others might follow soon after. His eyes searched the floor for the other two guns as he did his best to punch the lights out of the cop.
Yunho kicked Siwon, cursing himself for his loss of judgement. Now it was up to him to correct his own mess. He was going to make sure to defeat Siwon before the others arrived. Yunho realised the lawyer only had brute force on his side. He could use his skills to tire the man out and wait for the right moment.
…
On the floor, where Jaejoong had fallen to when Yunho had pulled Siwon off him, the slim man blinked his eyes when he noticed he had lost his jacket that was thrown carelessly nearby. He didn't remember taking it off. Sounds drifted past the fog in his mind. He was slowly recovering enough awareness to look in horror at the fight. He whipped his mouth overwhelmed with disgust, rememering how the lawyer had kissed him. More than ever he couldn’t understand how he had ever dated Siwon.
With a shake of his head, Jaejoong tried to overcome his panic attack and he frantically searched for the guns but they were all out of his reach. He couldn’t see them.
He stared at the fight again. He knew Yunho could probably defeat Siwon but the lawyer seemed to be powered by his madness. He needed to get a gun to be able to help Yunho if necessary. When necessary.
Jaejoong was nearly panicking again. On the corner, Taemin was crying in despair, curled into a ball. It was the young boy’s wails that gave Jaejoong the power to get up, ignore the nearby fight for a moment and search properly for the nearest gun.
Success.
Body shaking, Jaejoong aimed the gun. His throat closed off. He felt himself fall down to his knees. He needed to do something but he was so afraid of hitting Yunho. None of the gun firing training he had done with Yunho and Junsu could have prepared him for this. The two men kept changing positions and moving around. “Stand still, damn it!”
…
Mr. Jung had finally reached the control room where he watched everything with his heart in his hands, his voice shaking as he reported back to Junsu what was happening.
Changmin cursed as he raced the car the last minutes keeping them away from the house.
-We’ll make it, Min. We’ll make it. - Said Yoochun in a low whisper, more to himself than to his friend.
…
The two men were almost a match in strength. For every blow received, another was dealt. Yunho’s rage was up against Siwon’s madness. In the lawyer’s mind he had nothing to lose. He attacked with complete disregard for his own defence. Yunho, however, much as he wanted to destroy the man in front of him, he still tried to keep a clear head. He would be of no use to anyone if he lost this fight because of his emotions. He had already did that mistake earlier. They had realised Jaejoong was armed and aiming at them, still they continued circling and hitting each other.
Yunho kicked as high as his long legs reached and immediately after that bended at his waist to strike Siwon’s stomach with all his might before using his other hand to punch the man’s chin. The blows sent the lawyer to the floor where he stayed for a few seconds, panting loudly.
In those seconds, Yunho gave in to the urge to make sure with his own eyes that Jaejoong was really safe and unharmed.
The business man’s eyes were huge with fear and glued to Siwon’s every move. Yunho sighed and was about to return his attention to the fallen man on the floor ready to end the fight, when Taemin screamed.
-Gun!
Seeing Siwon twist his body out of Yunho’s reach to grab a gun and pointing it at the cop, Jaejoong didn’t hesitate. He made sure to aim the gun and fired.
…
Chapter 54 - Is It Over?,
.............................................
I really like that Siwon's picture. I can't with that smile while holding a gun. It's just perfect for this character.
I'm trying to continue writing so hopefully I won't leave you waiting too long to find out what happens next, ok?
