Chapter 50 - Flight or Fight? A dark familiar head appeared. Yoochun’s eyes wondered if he was dreaming. Moments later. Junsu was entering the room and being forced to kneel while some big guy pointed a gun at his head.
-Drop your weapons or he dies.
…
Yoochun wondered again if he was dreaming. Junsu captured? It made no sense. Junsu didn’t even seem to be hurt. He knew his boyfriend would never be caught without a fight. How was this possible? However, there he was, right in front of him while some guy aimed a gun at his head. Yoochun’s body was frozen, as if his blood had turned to ice.
-Drop your weapons or he dies! Why do I have to repeat myself?
Junsu looked at Yoochun and gave him an almost imperceptible nod. Yoochun wanted to just shoot the guy behind Junsu. It would be dangerous with a gun so close to this head but Junsu was kneeling and he had such a clear shot. However, Junsu’s eyes wore a fierce expression that he rarely saw, yet recognised immediately. His boyfriend was up to something.
Yoochun took a deep breath, steading his heart to do what Junsu obviously wanted. He understood nothing of what was going on and would bite his boyfriend to pieces if something went wrong but for now, he was going to comply. He slowly lowered his gun and nodded to his men to do the same. Behind him he heard Jonghyun cry and felt his conscience yell at him. He looked at Junsu again, searching for confirmation. Junsu smiled a little, just his eyes only. It was enough. He gave his boyfriend a slight nod.
All the bodyguards allowed their guns to be taken following Yoochun’s example.
Jonghyun just stared at everything in absolute fear.
Siwon’s men were smiling, very pleased with themselves.
Junsu remained kneeling, his head slightly lowered and hiding the pleased glint in his eyes.
…
Changmin finally saw Joon-gook and thanked all the angels in heaven. The man appeared lost in the confusion of smaller narrow streets. Instead of going back to the square he had gone in the opposite direction. There were five other men with him and he was still keeping Jun Ki prisoner.
…
Yunho was cursing heaven and hell. He was trapped fighting off Siwon’s men when Jaejoong needed his help the most.
…
Taemin felt as if he could finally breathe. He had not seen Siwon again which was bad, however he was with Jaejoong and they were moving away. That had to be good, right?
He took his girl disguise out and then just stared silently at the streets while Jaejoong drove as fast as he could.
When Jaejoong arrived at the point where he had last seen Donghae he realised the cops must have gone to investigate the gun shots. He could also hear a lot of police cars nearby. That made him feel better. If the cops had moved in, hopefully things would end fast and no one would get hurt. And maybe, just maybe they would arrest Siwon.
-Let’s go to my house and wait for news. We’ll be safer there. Not many bodyguards were left at the house but it’s well protected. And you’ll be able to talk with Ren.
-Ren? How is he?
-Worried sick about you. You’ll love seeing him again. He adapted so well to America. His parents are great and he has a great relationship with his new brother. I think he even has a girlfriend already.
-I’m so happy for Ren. He really deserves to be happy. I miss him.
-Me too. But his life is much better there than it would be here.
-Yes, I think so too.
Another moment of silence took over. Taemin searched for some topic to talk about. He needed to distract himself from all the tension and fear he had just experienced.
-Is Yunho your boyfriend?
Jaejoong’s hands on the wheel almost faltered for a second. The question made his heart race.
-W-what? Why do you ask that?
-The way you said goodbye to each other. It was… very sweet. It shows you like each other very much.
-Ah… We… I… We were just stressed out.
-Humph. Stressed or not, you found the time to hug and kiss like you can’t stand to be apart from each other. I remember seeing you with Siwon. It was so weird. Even you were a bit cold with him and it was like you changed into a different person than when it was just you and Ren.
Jaejoong hit the brakes and actually had to turn and stare at Taemin.
-When did you knew he was bad?
-The first second I saw him. His eyes are dead. The only spark in them is evil. He reminded me of the men that Jonghyun always told us to avoid. I was actually about to agree to join you and Ren when you showed up with him. I could not make Ren believe me. I tried so much.
Jaejoong watched as tears fell down the young boy’s eyes.
-Please, don’t blame yourself. You did try to warn him. But even if you had warned me I wouldn’t have believed you either. There was nothing you could have done. I was the one who failed in protecting Ren.
-He’s too dangerous. If he thought you were a threat he would have killed you. He killed some guy just cause he was annoyed. Pined it on Jung Yunho in two seconds. Didn’t even had to think about it.
-And sold Yunho a very convincing theory that I was the bad guy. God! He actually did kill someone.
-I don’t think that was the first time Siwon killed.
Jaejoong felt cold run down his spine at Taemin’s words. He started the car again. He really needed to get home fast.
-You didn’t answer. Is Yunho your boyfriend?
Jaejoong sighed before answering. And he felt the truth slip out of his lips even without him noticing.
-I… maybe. I hope so, eventually.
-Oh… you haven’t him asked yet. You should ask. The way he was looking at you that answer is hundred percent yes.
Jaejoong couldn’t help driving for quite some time with a blushed face and a shy happy smile.
…
Joon-gook was frustrated and irritated. The streets all looked the same to him. He knew he had turned the wrong way at some point but was tired of searching. Furthermore, he could know recognize the distant sound of police sirens. Best to stay low. He smiled at all the abandoned looking buildings around him. He just needed to find the best place to stay low until everything cleared. Worst came to worst, he already had a hostage.
Changmin kept out of sight, watching how Joon-gook got inside one of the buildings.
…
Yoochun looked around. He could now see exactly how many bad guys he had to deal with. He sighed exasperated, knowing he and his men could get rid of them easily in a hand combat. Hope flashed in his mind when he noticed how most of them had now put their guns away, judging them under control, but he kept his face blank, his eyes always returning to the big guy with the gun pointed at his boyfriend.
…
Yunho finally managed to get rid of the last guy. He grabbed a couple guns and took off running before more could show up. There were other cars but he chose a motorbike instead since he needed to be as fast as possible. Siwon was hot on Jaejoong’s tail and he feared he had already lost too much time.
…
Eric turned a corner to see Yunho already disappearing in the distance. He wondered what Yunho was doing alone in a motorbike. However the amount of unconscious bad guys seemed to indicate something had happen. He sighed. It was about time to get everyone together again. First, he’d try and find Changmin and Jun Ki.
…
Junsu kept his head low but he could almost hear the thoughts of the man behind him.
The big guy laughed pleased with himself. He had feared they were going to get in the middle of cross fire when they were shot from the back. However it had proved to be just one guy, who stupidly run out of bullets and had immediately surrendered. And then, wouldn’t you know, it was the boyfriend of the other one in the building. Perfect. He had managed to trap a good number of bodyguards, the kid that they were supposed to watch was with them, and he even had a hostage to keep everyone well behaved. Feeling powerful as the only one still holding a gun since, after all, he only needed one gun pointed at the kneeling man to control everyone, he waved it around to shout his orders.
Yoochun bit his inner cheeks as he saw the perfect opportunity to shoot the big guy without any chance of hurting Junsu.
At that exact moment, a shot echoed around the room.
…
Jaejoong was nearly arriving home. In the less busy streets he had a moment of fear when he spotted a car in his rear view mirror. He turned to a different street to verify if he was being followed but when no car showed up, he breathed deeply to calm down and hurried to get home.
Meanwhile, Siwon parked near Jaejoong’s house. He had visited the house enough times to be very familiar with it and he doubted that whatever added security was now in place could be a challenge. Quietly, he waited until he was sure his two targets were inside the house.
The lawyer wasn’t worried that he had been seen at the square, that some of Jaejoong’s men could have escaped or even that any of his men could be caught. He remembered very well how Jaejoong had to let him get away with what he had done to Ren because there were no evidences and his alibi was solid. Jaejoong hadn’t even bothered to involve the police.
This time he wasn’t equally well prepared. He had expected that his men would catch Taemin and the other boy and be gone from the square before anyone had even laid eyes on the boys. He couldn’t even figure out how Jaejoong had found out about the two kids meeting. His only alibi were his employees at his office. However they were well trained and he could always say they had been having a staff meeting. Add in one of his clients whose reputation he kept clean and no one would be able to touch him, not even if the police got involved.
Basically, Choi Siwon was sure that he would simply walk inside the house, capture Jaejoong and Taemin and be long gone before any surviving bodyguard could even think to try to annoy him.
…
Jun Ki was fed up. Completely fed up. And worried sick to find out if Changmin was ok. He had played quiet, not wanting to risk a shot to his head but now he could tell that the man was getting distracted. The other five guys were not even holding their guns anymore, having put them back in the holders.
Joon-gook looked around the old apartment building and smiled when he found an abandoned mattress in one of the dilapidated rooms. He figured they could have some fun while waiting. The guy in his arms seemed so defeated he didn’t even bother with instructions. His men noticed where he was moving to and quietly went into another room to wait if they’d be allowed their turn.
Jun Ki let the man to pull him inside the room, smiling to see that the other guys were out of sight. As long as guns weren’t involved, he was confident that he could take them.
Joon-gook put his gun aside, he wanted to have both hands free to enjoy his pretty hostage. He didn’t even have time to turn back his head to the other man before a powerful kick hit him.
…
Changmin had been shaking in fury but forcing himself to wait for the right moment. Then, he smiled to see that Jun Ki had taken matters into his own hands. That left him the other five guys. He wasted no time.
…
Donghae had been watching and watching. Fear making sweat drops trickle down his forehead. He couldn’t believe Junsu had convinced him to go ahead with such a foolish and risky plan. Worst was not being able to convince him to trade places when Junsu was the gun expert. He was sure Yoochun would find a way to punish him without Junsu finding out when all was fine and well. But his reckless friend was sure they would recognize him as Yoochun’s boyfriend and want to use him as hostage. He could only marvel that things were going as Junsu hoped. Most of the bad guys were spread around their friends, guns put away. Now he only needed to focus on the big guy with the gun pointed at Junsu.
The big guy looked very pleased with himself. So pleased he even started to wave the gun around as he started to give orders for the bodyguards to put their hands forward so they could be cuffed. As his men moved forward to obey him, Donghae noticed how Junsu lowered his body even more and tensed. Donghae fired his gun.
…
The moment Junsu heard the shot he waited until the bad guy yelled and turned his body to hit him. The gun vanished somewhere in the floor.
Yoochun wasted no time being surprised. He simply reacted and started to take down the men nearer, pleased to see his team react the same way.
…
Changmin managed to get three guys out before the other two ran away. He supressed his urge to laugh when he noticed that he wasn’t the only one running low on ammunition. He moved carefully trying to find where they could have gone to.
Meanwhile, Joon-gook and Jun Ki were finding each other harder to defeat than expected. The assistant heard shots from nearby and prayed it was Changmin. He could really use some help now. His fighting skills were good but this was the first time he fought someone for real and it was unsettling. This wasn’t a fight to find out who was stronger or more skilful, he was fighting for his life.
Changmin cursed because he was unable to find where the remaining two men had gone to. Then the sounds from Jun Ki fighting made him run back to help the assistant.
-Jun Ki.
With no hesitation, Changmin hit Joon-gook and took Jun Ki’s place in the fight. The older man stood back, trying to catch his breath as he watched the tall bodyguard trying to get rid of Joon-gook. He had barely managed to get his breathing under control before he was attacked from behind. Changmin found himself cursing again as the two missing men entered the room, one attacking Jun Ki and the other helping Joon-gook. The only good thing he could find in all this was that this time it was a fist fight. This would not have been a good time to find out he didn’t have enough bullets.
Jun Ki easily knocked down the newcomer, forcing the other one to turn his attention away from Changmin.
Meanwhile, Joon-gook had used the distraction of the two men’s arrival to retrieve his gun. He was furious and decided he was going to take his revenge.
Changmin found himself looking at a gun pointed straight at Jun Ki. He pulled his own gun out in a desperate move, not even remembering he didn’t know how many bullets he had left.
Two shots were heard.
…
Junsu lost track of how long he fought with the big guy. Around him he heard how the rest of the team was fighting but he couldn’t take his eyes away from his own fight.
Donghae had joined the mess downstairs, after emptying his last ammunition. He tried to move near Yoochun to help keep Jonghyun out of harm’s way.
Yoochun kept his mind clear, focused on the men attacking him. There were no guns involved now, the bad guys were not being given opportunity to use them.
Still a few adventurous guys took out knifes. Yoochun didn’t mind. He was still going to defeat them anyway.
…
Mr. Jung was happily waiting for Jaejoong in the living room and as soon as the business man entered he greeted him with a tight hug.
-I’m so glad to see you’re ok. We lost contact with you guys.
-Yes, the radio went dead. Everything is a mess. The cops have moved in too. But Taemin is safe now.
-Taemin? Hi, I’m Jung Ji Hoo, nice to meet you.
Taemin looked at the man in the wheel chair a little suspiciously at first, surprised at the casket on the man’s leg and arm but soon returning a smile in response to the old man’s warm smile.
-H-hi.
-Oh, my God. You are so cute. And you’ve been so brave.
-And he’s incredibly smart too.
-Why isn’t anyone with you?
-They stayed behind to make sure we escaped safely. I’m sure they’ll be ok and will be soon arriving to boast of how many bad guys they defeated.
Jaejoong answered with a steady voice even if couldn’t get his eyes to fully face Mr. Jung’s. He was worried about Yunho and his friends but he didn’t want to make the old man worry about his son.
…
Junsu managed to finally grab the big guy in a headlock, cutting off his airways and held tight. Soon the big man collapsed on the floor like a dead weight. Across the room he caught sight of Yoochun nearly flying, feet first into some guy’s throat. Junsu felt a swell of pride and simply enjoyed watching how his boyfriend easily dispatched the last three guys.
The exact moment the last man kissed the cold floor, Yoochun’s eyes immediately searched Junsu and it was visible how tension just left his body when he found the younger man casually leaning against a column and with a proud smile on his lips. Yoochun closed his eyes to take a deep breath of relief.
Junsu strolled purposefully across the wide room, stopping only in front of Yoochun to grab him into a fierce kiss. The older man just melted away. Junsu eased the kiss to eye Yoochun with a confused look.
-You’re shaking.
-Bloody hell, Junsu! You let some dude point a gun at your head! How the hell do you think that made me feel? I’m going to bite your head off you for doing something that stupid!
-You know I wouldn’t do that unless I wasn’t absolutely sure of what I was doing. You understood my plan. That’s why you nodded and focused on the guys around you.
-That doesn’t make it any better! Do you even understand the risk you took? Don’t you ever scare me like that again! You hear me? Never again!
Yoochun shook Junsu with a very angry face.
-I’m sorry, Chunnie. It was just the only way I figured of getting some guys off your back. There were too many of them to get rid of in the conventional way and Donghae and I were almost out of bullets.
The older man returned to his senses and started to rub Junsu’s arms soothingly, afraid that his tight grip might have left bruises behind.
-Junsu... Never ever ever ever again.
-Ok, baby. I’m sorry. Never again. Stop shaking. Come here.
Junsu hugged Yoochun hard, pulling their two bodies even closer, trying to calm down the older man. And himself, although he would never admit how scared he had been as well.
…
Jaejoong got some food for Taemin but couldn’t force himself to eat anything, despite Mr. Jung’s pleas.
-We better call the Captain to get an update. I don’t think anyone will be able to answer their mobiles now.
Jaejoong waited impatiently until finally someone answered.
-Hello?
-Captain?
-Ah, Mr. Kim Jaejoong. It’s good to hear your voice. Any news?
-I’ve got Taemin here with me in my house. He witnessed Siwon kill that guy that Yunho is accused of murdering. Please, can you arrest him now? That should be enough. Isn’t it?
-I had been preparing an order for his arrest already, based on what your assistant, Shin Hye-sung and Jun Jin have managed to find out about all the money laundering. Now I also added murder to it. I already sent teams to his office and his house. We’ll catch him.
-I really hope so.
-I’ve got an order for Park Ri Ho’s arrest too. I finally managed to get a swift permission to search his club. I doubt any possible paid informant may have found out about it. He won’t have time to hide anything. It’s about time we rescue those kids.
-Oh, thank heavens.
Mr. Jung waved at Jaejoong and he knew what the old man wanted to know. He had been dying to ask it himself.
-Captain, my friends…
-Jung Il Woo called just now. They got the area secured, already arrested a lot of guys that your men incapacitated. They are about to start a sweep of every building. I’m sure your men will be fine. According to what Il Woo said they are incredibly efficient.
-Thank you. It’s good to hear everything is almost over.
-Take care, Mr. Kim. I’m going to arrest Park Ri Ho now but don’t worry about Choi Siwon’s. Soon he’ll be under custody.
-I’m keeping my fingers cross.
…
Outside the house, one of Siwon’s men climbed a pole and conveniently ruined the phone wires. Others spread around the property, ready to climb the walls into the gardens. Then a delivery truck approached the gate and suddenly smoke came out of the engine, the driver opening the door and screaming away in fear. When the guard stationed at the gate came to help the man, he barely took a few steps before he was shot dead. Behind the dead body, the side door that led inside the property was held by man that had stepped out from the back of the van: a smiling Choi Siwon.
…
Changmin looked in front of him in disbelief. Joon-gook was dead. The other guy had run away. And Jun Ki… Jun Ki was laying on the floor, unmoving.

Chapter 52 - Beating Hearts,
