Edge of the Lake, Early Afternoon Sunday

Jun 17, 2007 14:56

It was deathly quiet here. The water was still, and there was but one sign of anything amiss.

That sign was the glimpses of a body, floating in the shallows of the water.

Cadfael walked along with Fujiko keeping a weather eye out and periodically calling out Thelma's name.

Fujiko was doing much the same. Well, when she wasn't being inappropriately amused by the fact that, hey, she was with a monk.

They were coming up on the lake when Fujiko spotted something floating in the water. It looked like maybe clothing, and...

"Hey!"

She grabbed at Cadfael's robe and pointed towards the lake.

Cadfael pursed his lips and exhaled through his nose with a grim expression.

He rolled up his sleeves and hitched up his robe before wading out into the water to retrieve whomever it was that was floating in such an unfortunate way.

Oh, no. Oh, shit. Oh, shit, shit, shit.

This looked so very, very bad.

Fujiko waded out after Cadfael, forgetting to take off her shoes.

"Is it... Is it?" she asked

Nadia had heard the bells the Groundskeeper rang modded with permission and had noticed the bit of commotion to the south as she and her group kept searching the southern end of town. She hurried over, but stopped a few feet shy of actually reaching the group.

She could just make out Thelma amidst it all. She'd seen enough dead bodies to be able to tell that Thelma was now just another one.

She swallowed hard and took and involuntary step back, then stopped again . . . then turned and ran back into town. She had to tell people. Right. That's why she was running.

It had nothing to do with it hurting to see her friend as "just another dead body".

[ooc: about to run out for family dinner for Father's Day, so Nadia's reaction is a quick one. I'll be back later this evening to play things out more]

When Nadia had run off, Susan had followed her out of concern. Now she saw the girl running and stepped into her path. "Nadia?"

Nadia tried to dodge around Susan. "She's--she's dead, I have to let people know,"

Damn. Susan's expression darkened but she as always, she kept her head in a crisis. She wasn't sure letting Nadia go running off while in shock was such a good idea with a possible murderer around.

She reached out towards the girl beseechingly. "Let's go back to the chapel. The people there should know. The rest of the searchers should follow us."

Bellatrix had been looking on the North side of town when she heard the bells. Her heart jumped, Had they found her alright?

Bellatrix moved towards the sound of the bells and then saw the crowds. Pushing her way through them she saw the edge of the lake.

Something was wrong, there should be cheers welcoming Thelma back.

Her eyes drew to the ground, she saw her laying there, a jacket over her face.

"Thelma..." Bellatrix' hand flew to her mouth, she couldn't move, her eyes were rooted to the spot.

Nate had been with Bellatrix's group, and had followed her. He knew that the girl was dead, long before he saw her. If just felt like there was death here.

"Damn shame," he said, simply. He went to try and place a reassuring hand on her shoulder.

Bellatrix looked up at him. "She was my friend." She said in a soft whisper.

"She's in a better place," Nate said. "Trust me. I know it sounds like a dumb cliche. But I got experience."

Cassie had somehow managed to completely ignore the significance of the bells calling people to search earlier. The small group gathering down by the lake however, was something she couldn't help but take notice of. It didn't take more than a second for the sickening realisation of what that group might be gathering for, hit home.

The lake was all part of the signature. Part of the visions. She'd seen it before.

As soon as she got that bit nearer she started to run, racing down towards the group by the waters' edge, still trying to cling to the desperate hope this might just be something else.

Nick looked up and strode forwards toward her. "Miss Hughes?"

Her automatic response was to barely even register the man's presence. "Please, no," she murmured desperately. Cassie shook her head, still trying to reach Thelma.

"I don't think now's the best time," Nick said, quietly, restraining her.
