Edge of the Lake, Early Afternoon Sunday

Jun 17, 2007 14:56

It was deathly quiet here. The water was still, and there was but one sign of anything amiss.

That sign was the glimpses of a body, floating in the shallows of the water.

Cassie had somehow managed to completely ignore the significance of the bells calling people to search earlier. The small group gathering down by the lake however, was something she couldn't help but take notice of. It didn't take more than a second for the sickening realisation of what that group might be gathering for, hit home.

The lake was all part of the signature. Part of the visions. She'd seen it before.

As soon as she got that bit nearer she started to run, racing down towards the group by the waters' edge, still trying to cling to the desperate hope this might just be something else.

Nick looked up and strode forwards toward her. "Miss Hughes?"

Her automatic response was to barely even register the man's presence. "Please, no," she murmured desperately. Cassie shook her head, still trying to reach Thelma.

"I don't think now's the best time," Nick said, quietly, restraining her.

Cassie struggled briefly, choking back a cry before giving up and simply using him as a support to her rapidly weakening knees. "No, no, no." The reality of everything that had happened the last few days was suddenly coming very real, her hopes that everything would work out, coming crashing down. "No."

Fujiko had followed the sheriff. She really wasn't sure what to do, so she just stood nearby.

"Maybe we should take you inside, Cassie."

Because soon there would be forensics people and a body bag and all kinds of badness that Cassie would be better off not seeing.

"I--" Cassie shook her head, she probably wasn't even thinking about answering the question. She pressed a shaking hand to her mouth to at least smother her sobs ever so slightly, stumbling as she tried to move away from the people.

Fujiko followed Cassie and moved to take hold of her shoulder and lead her back towards the dorms.

Clearly she was in no shape to answer any questions the sheriff might have.

Cassie, still letting out the occasional muffled cry, seemed fairly content to be led away. She shakily followed Fujiko's lead, the reality that she really had lost her best friend was just a little too much for her after everything she'd seen in the last 24 hours.

Seeing that Cassie didn't pull away, Fujiko took a firmer hold of her shoulders and began their slow walk back to campus.

"Your room or mine?" she asked.

Thelma had been Cassie's roommate, so maybe it wasn't the best idea for her to see all of Thelma's things.

Cassie was quiet for a moment. "I don't... " She swallowed and shook her head. "I don't think I want to go back there yet," she said slowly.
