After the first snow a few weeks ago, tree leaves starting turning color in abundance.  Leaves fell to the ground soon afterward.  Most of the deciduous trees are already bare.

Yesterday morning, frost appeared on rooftops.  Not a hard freeze, but enough for ice to show up before the sun warmed the surface.

50F (28C for most of the planet) is a really large temperature change. We've had several days of very cold temperatures here in Minnesota USA. It's been -20F/29C during the nights, slightly better during the days. weather: The sun's been up a short while, yet we still have -22F/-30C air temp (-38F/-39C windchill). I heard a loud pop come from the wall in my bedroom this morning. The cablemodem internet connection here keeps dropping out. After cycling power on the modem, it comes up with some packet drops, but then it eventually just fails completely. I ( Read more... )

Weather.com says that it is currently -18F/-28C air temp (-34F/-37C windchill) outside, yet it is time for me to get a shower and then wait outside for a bus to take me downtown before the sun is even up.  *brrrr*  But it's for a worthy cause, right?

Last year was so warm that the pile of shoveled snow kept melting in between buildup. Maybe this year will be better. I'd eventually like to make an animation showing the accumulation of snow at the side of the garage.  I saw snowflakes fall many days ago, but they melted as soon as they touched the ground.  Today it's finally "sticking".

Weather.com says it's currently -13F (-24F windchill) here in Minnesota this morning. That's cold enough to hurt exposed skin, make my eyes water, and freeze the hairs inside my nose (feeling all prickly) if I inhale quickly. I doubt that I'd survive 24 hours outdoors here with any of the equipment that I currently own.  Pretty darned cold.  I've ( Read more... )

I recently found this NASA site that explains some of what they do to measure and track global temperature data. The graphs there show the unfortunate long-term trend. They posted yesterday the results of 2007, and we tied for 2nd place with 1998.
