...And We Danced On Into the Night

Feb 14, 2008 12:33

For once the Danger Room didn't seem all that Dangerous. It was decked out in decorations, both large and small, dedicated to the holiday that was Valentine's Day. Hearts and cupids were everywhere, including some holographic ones that were floating in the air ( Read more... )

It doesn't matter how he did it. The fact remains that it's been done.

The several bowls of punch at this celebration have all been laced with chemical concoctions developed by one Quentin Beck.

Half of the bowls have a compound that will alter the brain chemistry in such a way as to cause an endorphin rush, and the victims will find themselves suddenly and intensely attracted to the first person they see after the three-minute incubation period.

The other half of the punch bowls will have a different effect. A polarization of certain chemicals, leading to people reacting to each other in the exact opposite way they normally would.

Perhaps a michievous science prank, but these mutants are merely test subjects. Mysterio will develop more sinister uses for these chemicals, should they prove effective.

Dani Moonstar glares over her students. A dance in the danger room is the stupidest idea she's heard since the kids slipped Ororo's hands into a couple buckets of water during a lightning storm to see if the woman would turn into a living battery.

If she had her way, the dance would be outdoors on a Wednesday at 2 in the afternoon with the Avengers as chaperones and the National Guard on alert.

Didn't they learn anything from the New Mutants?

Rogue is here.... You know, she's not entirely certain why she's here. Maybe she thought that the people she didn't want to see wouldn't be at the dance. Then again, she's not exactly usually thrilled to watch all of the kids dance and be romantic - or try to be at least.

"Mr. Gibson, far be it for me to be a 'drag,' and we're certainly not expecting you all to dance an arm's length apart--for that to be possible for some of you, it would require the jaws of life--but I'm quite sure Miss Betto's lips will stay on her face without yours helping to hold them there."

Beast was wearing a suit and looking quite dapper. It was a dance, after all.

As he came over to the other two chaperones, he said, with slight, if good-natured, exasperation "I am suddenly reminded of a documentary I once saw on the mating behavior of Bonobos..."

And there were just as quickly joined by another adult who was finding out how much this was going to be an uphill battle.

Was there anything in that documentary that said how to ge them to stop? Freezing their hands is barely slowing them down, I may have to aim for more sensitive body parts.

"You and your boundless optimism," Teddy teased, shaking his head. He was feeling cautiously optimistic about this. Getting everyone out of their rooms and into some other place where they could relax and act like kids could only help, right?

The floating holographic cupids were a little disconcerting, though.

The Danger Room will not try to kill you, a voice spoke into Danny's mind.

Provided that you and your friend refrain from your usual level of boyish stupidity, spoke an eerily similar, but only slightly different voice followed.

And avoid randomly pushing buttons.

Failure to comply.

Will only push our buttons.

And you don't want to do that either, all the voices chimed in together.

"We are not in much trouble, at all," one of them said out loud to Danny, very matter of factly.

"We haven't done anything wrong," said another. Apparently they talked like this all the time.

"And hopefully the Professor can better educate you."

"On how you're being quite offensive."

Yeah, it was all his fault.

"You were yelling."

"We were overhearing."

"We can no more become deaf to your thoughts."

"Than anyone else can will themselves to be deaf to the world around them."

"We've done all we can to make you less of a nuisance."

"While allowing you to continue to think freely."

"Yet you continue to be an annoyance."

"And fail to realize."

"That you are the problem."

Sofia and Jay arrived together. Sofia had gone to a lot of trouble to radiate beauty and it worked. Her make up was just right. Her white dress clung to her enough to show her curves but not enough to show her belly. The front of her dress slanted away to reveal well muscled legs from dancing. The back did trail on the ground but if she had to she could use her wind powers to keep it from tangling in her shoes. And then there was the top, trimmed with golden yellow, with thin straps around her neck and shoulder. It had taken forever to find a strapless bra and she only hoped it would work properly.

Jay was wearing a suit, specially tailored, wings free, and the single girls were swooning a little and getting giggly when he walked past them, but tonight, all his focus was on one girl that he intended to show a good time.

Of course, his thoughts were straying somewhat traitorously towards another girl, one who he wondered would look like in one of the dresses the girls were wearing. No makeup even. Just a smile on her face and--

Was that wrong to wonder about that? She hadn't wanted to be scene during the business with Mojo, but he couldn't un-see it. He just wondered.

But regardless, he was here with Sofia, and he did enjoy her company, quite a bit, and he was going to show her a good time and that was that.

Sofia couldn't help but notice that Jay seemed distracted.

...Maybe she put on too much blush? Was the dress too tight? Oh God what if her bra had slipped down? No wait, no, she could feel it in the right place.

Nope, nothing wrong, and he caught himself zoning, blinked, and turned to her.

"Y'know, you look absolutely gorgeous tonight."
