Room 122 and beyond - Starting Friday afternoon

Jul 07, 2006 20:31

Veronica was packed and ready to go. She and Archie definitely deserved a trip off the island after everything they had gone through the last few weeks.

While she was waiting for him to get back from his workshop, she sat at her laptop and fired off a quick email as promised. Too bad she didn't realize she'd attached the wrong pictures.

Archie, bags in hand, came bounding down the hall from his room as soon as he'd returned from his workshop and changed into more modern attire. He was bright-eyed and red-cheeked from the morning's sailing, and sporting a wide, excited grin as a result.

"Are we ready?"

"We certainly are," Veronica confirmed with a grin, shutting her laptop and walking over to give him a kiss.

Archie dropped his bags long enough to wrap his arms around her and kiss her quite thoroughly. "Last-minute emailing?"

"I had to send Lindsey the pictures of Cally and Piper kissing from last night," Veronica explained. "But I'm leaving the laptop here. And the cell is going on vibrate not dirty so we aren't disturbed. I'd leave it here, but I worry that my dad might try to call or something."

The moment they set foot in the lobby of the Willard Intercontinental, Archie set his bags down and stared at the place.

"Dear God in heaven. This is incredible. Are you sure this is the right hotel?"

"Yeah, I found a really good deal on their regular guest rooms," Veronica explained as they walked up to the desk to register.

"Can I help you?" the desk clerk asked.

"Registration for Mars," Veronica said.

The clerk tapped a few keys on the computer and then smiled. "Congratulations," he said before walking away.

Archie raised an eyebrow. "Congratulations?" he echoed.

Veronica shrugged. "Maybe we get a free continental breakfast or something," she said.

The desk clerk came back and handed Veronica a folder. "There are two keys for your suite," he said. "And there is a complimentary bottle of champagne waiting on ice for you to celebrate."

"Celebrate?" Veronica repeated.

"It's customary for all newlyweds who stay in the honeymoon suite."

It wasn't often that Veronica was stunned into silence, but that sure did it. She looked at Archie helplessly.

"I ate entirely too much," Veronica groaned as they boarded the tour-mobile for the night time tour of the monuments. "Did you like it?"

The tour-mobile started moving and the soon arrived at their first stop, the Lincoln Memorial.

Archie hiccuped a bit but put on a brave face. "I did like it, but I think I may have overindulged myself."

He stared at the memorial, fascinated. "That's beautiful," he murmured, reaching for Veronica's hand. "So modern, and yet something ancient about it as well. I wish I'd read up on my American history some more, but I suppose that will give me something to do between workshops this summer."

"I took US History last semester. I'd be more than happy to share my notes," Veronica said, lacing her fingers with his as the vehicle stopped so they could go and look at the monument up close.

"Lincoln is famous for abolishing slavery," she explained as they climbed the steps to see the statue up close.

Archie nodded, staring up at the statue with unmistakable awe on his face. "I'd like to read those notes. I missed out on so much between my time and now. I wish I could appreciate all this more."
