Room 122 and beyond - Starting Friday afternoon

Jul 07, 2006 20:31

Veronica was packed and ready to go. She and Archie definitely deserved a trip off the island after everything they had gone through the last few weeks.

While she was waiting for him to get back from his workshop, she sat at her laptop and fired off a quick email as promised. Too bad she didn't realize she'd attached the wrong pictures.

"I ate entirely too much," Veronica groaned as they boarded the tour-mobile for the night time tour of the monuments. "Did you like it?"

The tour-mobile started moving and the soon arrived at their first stop, the Lincoln Memorial.

Archie hiccuped a bit but put on a brave face. "I did like it, but I think I may have overindulged myself."

He stared at the memorial, fascinated. "That's beautiful," he murmured, reaching for Veronica's hand. "So modern, and yet something ancient about it as well. I wish I'd read up on my American history some more, but I suppose that will give me something to do between workshops this summer."

"I took US History last semester. I'd be more than happy to share my notes," Veronica said, lacing her fingers with his as the vehicle stopped so they could go and look at the monument up close.

"Lincoln is famous for abolishing slavery," she explained as they climbed the steps to see the statue up close.

Archie nodded, staring up at the statue with unmistakable awe on his face. "I'd like to read those notes. I missed out on so much between my time and now. I wish I could appreciate all this more."

"There are probably some good guidebooks available too," Veronica said. "Maybe we can pick one up so you at least have some idea of what's going on."

"We can get one, but reading it can wait until we get back," Archie said as he read the inscriptions on the monument walls. "I have much more interesting things to do than read this weekend."

Veronica smiled. "Come on, we have to get back to the tour-mobile so we can go to the next stop."

"It wouldn't do to miss it," Archie agreed, squeezing her hand again as they headed back to the tour-mobile. "What are we seeing next?"

"The Jefferson Memorial," Veronica told him. "He drafted the Declaration of Independence," she explained, as the tour-mobile drove around the Tidal Basin and finally came up to the memorial.

"As an Englishman, I should resent that," teased Archie. "Ooooh. But it's hard to resent something that looks so imposing at night."

"We know how to honor our dead heroes," Veronica said. The tour stopped again when they arrived and they were able to go inside.

"Now that's a style of dress I'm more familiar with," Archie grinned. "If I remember correctly he's considered one of the founders of the country. Is that right?"

"Yes, he is," Veronica said. "He was the third president. Of course, lately he seems to be making the news because he apparently had an affair with a black slave and there's been some sort of genetic evidence that there's a whole slew of people who are his descendants. It's got all the blue bloods up in arms."

Archie snorted. "This many years later? That seems awfully irrelevant now. Though . . ." He paused. "I can see how that might upset some people. I might feel the same way if facts about Lord Nelson surfaced that didn't sit well with me."

"Who's Lord Nelson?" Veronica asked as they re-boarded the tour-mobile.

The last time Archie had gone into fanboy mode like this, it had been on their trip to the San Diego Maritime Museum and the HMS Surprise.

"Vice-Admiral Horatio Nelson, 1st Viscount Nelson, Duke of Bronte, KB," he recited. "He's practically a god among British military heroes to this day. Really, Trafalgar Square in London commemorates him."

He settled back into his seat and squeezed her hand. "Perhaps sometime I can return the favor, and we can go to England."
