What: Mello decides that it's time to play with the large blank book in the library again.

So he just started at Mello just a bit vacantly and confused and rather awkwardly, when the new arrival suddenly made herself known. Knuckle turned to the welcomed distraction with a warm smile.
"Oh, why hello there."

He slid the book a few inches across the table, in the guy's direction.
"If you'd like to find out if it's important," he suggested with a slight smirk, "Why don't you take a look for yourself?"
He turned to look over his shoulder upon hearing someone speak up behind them, giving the newcomer a brief nod in acknowledgement. Kari, wasn't it? Kari, the hybrid-fox screwball.
And she had greeted them as though she'd been surprised by their presence in the library.
"Not expecting company, or what?" The question was flat, though his tone wasn't quite unfriendly.

"Well, no. I don't usually see anyone in here." Which was true, she didn't normally notice anyone around here in her patrols. Well, more like wanderings.
"I didn't interrupt anything, did I?"

Well, there couldn't be harm in looking through it. So, he opened the book, and much to his surprise writing just started appearing on the page. He wasn't paying much mind to the actual words at the moment, too enthralled with the books writing. In which he would miss the passive insult in the writing itself- 'Knuckle picked up the book, awed by the writing that appeared on the page, though sadly, not much else was going through his head.'
The priest looked back up to Mello, in a desperate need to state the obvious to the person who already seemed to know that the book was special.
"I-it's writing by itself."

The revelation didn't faze him so much as it sparked his curiosity. He peered over the guy's shoulder to read what the book had apparently written.
A line of narration? And it apparently had a penchant for insults as well, though Mello suspected that the point it made was perfectly valid. Knuckle-- whatever the hell kind of name that was, though Mello hardly had a place to judge-- did seem to be rather glaringly dense.
He narrowed his eyes as he watched the book continue to narrate Knuckle's actions. Still astonished, Knuckle turned to Mello and told him that "It's writing by itself."
Since he already knew that the book reacted to being written in, Mello supposed that the sensible response would be to answer it. On the chance that writing in the book was too strictly off limits, though, it would be most sensible not to risk writing in it himself. Since the kid who had been a witness to his ( ... )
