Mello hadn't even begun to answer Kari's question when the guy turned back to him to announce something about the book writing by itself.

The revelation didn't faze him so much as it sparked his curiosity. He peered over the guy's shoulder to read what the book had apparently written.

A line of narration? And it apparently had a penchant for insults as well, though Mello suspected that the point it made was perfectly valid. Knuckle-- whatever the hell kind of name that was, though Mello hardly had a place to judge-- did seem to be rather glaringly dense.

He narrowed his eyes as he watched the book continue to narrate Knuckle's actions. Still astonished, Knuckle turned to Mello and told him that "It's writing by itself."

Since he already knew that the book reacted to being written in, Mello supposed that the sensible response would be to answer it. On the chance that writing in the book was too strictly off limits, though, it would be most sensible not to risk writing in it himself. Since the kid who had been a witness to his first encounter with it hadn't been injured, it had most likely ignored her in favour of attacking him. Thus, he had a much better chance of remaining safe if someone else agreed to be his scribe.

He fished out a pen from the pocket of his jacket, and quite nearly slammed it down onto the table with a flattened hand. "Now, here's a thought," he suggested, flashing Knuckle a wide grin. "Why don't you put it down and try writing back?"
