"I don't see why not."
And with a shrug, Knuckle took the pen and gave it a curious look for a moment. He hadn't seen one like this before. It was... closer to one of Nina's Crayons almost. Well, no matter, as long as it would write. He thought for a moment about what to write, but he would keep it simple for now, it was best to greet it politely.
'Hello.' was neatly scrawled on the page, in old fashioned calligraphy, though he did seem to put a little too much force behind the pen, causing it to look bolded. In a moment, 'hello' appeared back. Knuckle's eyes widened and he smiled, how amusing!
"Well, would you look at that!"

Well, it was something. It was always hard to tell exactly what, with this house. Kari put a finger to her chin, examining the words.
"Try asking it something. It might know something about what's going on here."
It? Him? Her? Did books have genders?

And if the book was capable of carrying out a conversation, matters would be far more interesting.
"I'm not sure that alive is the right word," he commented dryly, turning back to face the fox-girl with a raised eyebrow. "That's probably not possible to determine. But I agree with you."
Treating it as if it were alive, after all, would likely produce much more of a result than treating it like an ordinary inanimate object would.
"Knuckle," he declared, placing one hand back down on the table, and glancing back up to meet the guy's gaze. "Try to continue the conversation."

All words on the page save for Knuckle's name disappeared. Knuckle blinked a few times in surprise, "Well would you look at that, I didn't think that was a common name..."

It was impossible to tell which was the case, though the book's decision-- if it actually was conscious of its actions-- to go blank in response to the question wasn't surprising in the least; Mello hadn't been expecting to be able to get an answer so easily. Especially not one so damn vague.
But still...
"Ask it if it can answer questions," he suggested, before glancing back up to give the guy an almost incredulous stare. Considering the fact that the book seemed to have already known their names, Mello suspected that it had been utterly pointless for Knuckle to introduce himself. And furthermore, what reason was there to assume that its answer had actually been honest?
Barring all puns about writing utensils, Knuckle seemed to be quite tragically less than the brightest crayon in the box.
