First, I am so excited about this National Protest on the War Against Women stuff that has been going around. These issues are sooooo important - both the specific fight over women's access to safe contraception and the more general issue of political rights and voice. While the results of this USC study on Oscar-nominated films are not exactly surprising, the numbers are pretty disheartening. Of films nominated for Academy Awards between 2007 and 2010:

• Only 32.6 percent of speaking characters were female
• Only 14.3 percent of directors were female
• Of the speaking characters analyzed for race, 78 percent were white
