While the results of this
USC study on Oscar-nominated films are not exactly surprising, the numbers are pretty disheartening. Of films nominated for Academy Awards between 2007 and 2010:
- Only 32.6 percent of speaking characters were female
- Only 14.3 percent of directors were female
- Of the speaking characters analyzed for race, 78 percent were white
- Black actors accounted for 11.6 percent of the speaking roles
- Latino actors accounted for 1.9 percent of speaking roles
In good news, people are studying this stuff and talking about it in the academy?
ETA: They posted
the full report. It is only a couple pages long, but there is lots of data for those who like that sort of thing.
