Reid made Katie cash in on her promise to take him out to dinner for a week straight. The only problem that this brought up was that she always wanted to talk about Luke. After their third dinner together he finally gave in, but only told her that they had made out. He couldn’t tell if she bought the lie or not, but frankly, it was none of her business.

He thought that he was in the clear, until their last dinner together.

“Reid, you look absolutely exhausted.” Katie said. She eyed her friend and she could see the dark circles under his eyes. He was pushing his food around on his plate, when normally he would be scarfing it up in as little bites as possible. She knew he was sick of her prying but she was starting to worry.

“Long. Hours.” Reid responded punctuating each word. He was getting annoyed with Katie’s questions.

“No need to jump down my throat. I’m just worried about you. You aren’t sick are you?”

“You don’t need to worry about me.” Reid shot back. He was irriatable and would give anything to leave the dinner right now and go back to his house, but he didn’t for two reasons. The first being, if he went home, he was just going to stare at the TV and then try to go to sleep, even though he would probably get less than two hours. And two, he never passed up a free meal.

Katie eyed her best friend as he let out a heavy sigh. She knew that something was wrong and it probably had to do with Luke. She also knew that he obviously didn’t want to talk about it, but she knew, from lots of personal experience that keeping it bottled up only made it worse.

“Reid, I know that you are going to reject my offer.”

“Well in that case, No.”

“Since you already said ‘no’, what I was going to say was, let’s not talk about whatever is going on.” Katie responded. She knew she had to catch Reid in some loophole. She watched him smirk, impressed that she had caught him. “So let’s just leave and go someplace quiet.”

Reid just nodded as he watched Katie reach into her purse and leave money for the bill.

“Wait, can I at least get a carry-out box?” Reid asked with a small smile on his face, Katie laughed, playfully hitting his arm.

--
They arrived at Katie’s place and Katie paid the babysitter and then put Jacob to bed, Reid hadn’t realized that it was only 8:00, he thought it was much later. It was hard for him to keep the time straight because he was so tired. He sat down on the couch and shut his eyes for just a second.

Katie came back into the room and saw that Reid was resting. She debated waking him up, guessing that he hadn’t slept in a long time. She quietly walked into the kitchen and got herself a glass of water. The noise of the sink woke Reid up from his daze. He looked around and saw Katie walking back towards him. She sat down next to him on the couch and situated herself so that she was facing him.

Reid exhaled boisterously, Katie was giving him the ‘tell me everything’ eyes. He hated that he gave into her.

“Just hear me out.” Katie began, “I have been in close to one-million relationships, give or take, many of them with the same person. You might not think I know what you are going through, but I can at least give you some insight, maybe some sort of guidance on what might make you feel better. What might make this situation better. I know that you hate getting advice from anybody but yourself, but I think I can help. I want to help.”

“O.K.”

“That’s it. You aren’t going to fight me on this?”

“What and go through the whole song and dance and in the end I just give in anyways because I know you won’t stop harping me about it and everybody in this town needs to know everybody’s damn business.”

Katie was hurt by his words but she knew he didn’t mean it. He was a mess.

“Just start where you want to.”

Reid wasn’t going to lie. He hated talking about his feelings. That was one of the greatest things about being with Luke. They understood each other, which cut out a lot of unneeded talks about feelings. They didn’t need to have a two hour long discussion about how to get over the disappointing result of a surgery. Luke knew that he would need some time alone but still be there for him. Or when Luke was ridiculously happy about something, even if it was just that it was a beautiful day, Reid would know that Luke would want a kiss and then Reid would shut up and listen to Luke go on and on about how pretty the sun is and how flowers are just amazing.

They rarely fought because they understood each other.

Why couldn’t all his relationships be like the one he had with Luke? (He knew it was because nobody else in the world was like Luke.)

“Ever since I was young…”Reid started off slowly, he hated this so much, but he was tired. He just wanted to get this talk over with so he could go home and stare at the ceiling until the sun came up. “…I decided that lying and cheating were the two worst things you could ever do to somebody. I might have been young, but I knew what they could do to people. As I got older and started to have…” Reid groaned before saying the starting again “…started to have relationships, I decided I would never be with anybody who cheated on me or lied to me and if they did I would end it. I wouldn't allow myself to get hurt, and up until this point, I did that and I haven't been hurt.”

“Have you actually ended it with Luke?”

“No and that is why I hate myself, I barely recognize the person I am anymore.”

“Reid, I’m going to be honest with you. Luke changed you. When you first came here you were rough and arrogant and there were three people who saw through all that and saw the real you, Bob Hughes, me, and Luke. It was never an act, that is who you are, but you are also so much more, and Luke was able to bring that that out of you so that everybody could see how great you are. You are an ass, but you also aren’t. You would do anything for almost anybody, even if they didn’t owe you a thing. You have changed, but not in a bad way. And trust me, you are still rough and arrogant.”

Reid had never heard somebody talk about him in that way before. He was almost moved by it.

“I guess since I consider lying to be one of the worst things I guess I should be fully honest with you, not that I wasn't honest before.”

“Does it have anything to do with Margo’s party?” Katie asked. She knew there was more. She knew he would eventually tell her what really happened. If they had just kissed, things would be better, he wouldn’t be this miserable. “He didn’t end it with you did he?”

“No.”

“Well then.”

“I didn’t know he was going to be at Margo’s.”

“I didn’t either.”

“Well, we obviously saw each other. I wasn’t drunk this time and he hadn’t been drinking either.”

“That’s better than last time, so why are you still so miserable?”

“I-we, well, let’s just say I spent the night.”

“Oh, Reid. I’m not…well... I’m not judging you in anyway, but you just can’t keep doing this, especially without talking about what actually happened.”

Reid ignored that last bit. He knew all that was true but he hated hearing it told to him.

“So what happened after that? Did you guys talk at all?”

“I can’t sleep.”

“What?!” Katie asked, shocked by how he changed the subject.

“It’s been almost a month since this has happened and I haven’t been able to sleep and you know my hours at the hospital have almost doubled.”

“Is it affecting your work?”

“No, not yet, I have amazing stamina when it comes to the hospital and my job. But the minute I leave I want nothing more than to go to bed, but when I do, I can’t sleep.”

“Wait, rewind, I know you are skipping something.”

“It’s gotten worse.”

“Since that night?”

Reid nodded. Why Katie thought talking about this would be therapeutic was beyond him. It hurt to talk about this, it hurt so bad. He didn’t want to tell her what he had done to Luke.

“I left…”

Reid waited for Katie to yell at him for being stupid, but she didn’t she wanted him to finish.

“…I just couldn’t deal with what the morning was going to bring. It was either leave when I woke up and not say anything, or wake him up so he could watch me leave, or wake him up and we talk about it and then I leave. I didn’t want to do either of those so I did what I thought would hurt me the least because now I want to be selfish. He got to be selfish with our relationship now it’s my turn.”

Katie had never really heard Reid sound so revengeful about the whole situation. She was about to say something but he started up again. She could tell this is what he had been holding back.

“I know that it hurt him, and maybe, deep down, that is what I wanted to happen. I wanted him to feel terrible. Do you know how sick I felt when I found out what he had done, maybe I just wanted him to feel a fraction of that pain. I know it’s immature and I know I shouldn’t have done it. But this is why I never did relationships before, because I know not everything is push and pull, not everything is even, you don’t keep score. I know this. But I couldn’t be there in the morning.”

Katie’s mouth was agape. She didn't know how to respond. Reid was always honest, but she had never seen him this raw before. She knew it was because he was tired and fed up with all her questions, but she also knew that maybe he had unlocked a lot of his issues with Luke and the whole situation. Saying it out loud made it real. He needed to hear himself say how he really felt. She could tell he was remorseful for what he had done. That he cared about Luke more than anybody in the entire world, more than himself.

“And the worst part was besides hurting him, I actually slept. For the first time in a month I actually was able to sleep.”

“Wow, Reid. Just…wow. I think you might have solved any relationship problem I have ever had.” She thought about his words, he was right, you don’t keep score.

“Katie, I have to go.” Reid said. He was almost shaking after his confession. He realized he had to have hurt Luke in some small way, something he would never do, the help him forgive him. But he was tired. He had to work in the morning.

“Just one question.”

“Yeah?”

“Have you forgiven him yet?”

--

Luke hadn’t been able to sleep since the night Reid left without any indication that he had even been there the night before. He almost thought that maybe he had dreamt up the whole situation, but he was reminded that it had in fact happened because for the first time in a long (long) time, he was sore in the morning.

To say that he hadn’t been able to sleep since that night alone would be a lie. Ever since the whole situation had occurred he had not been able to sleep, maybe a couple hours a night. However, it was getting worse, almost to the point where he was able to see the sun come up in the morning.

He was so fucking tired.

Everybody in his family had noticed and commented on it. They were worried about him. But he was tired of talking about it.

However, he was worried about himself. He didn’t want to take sleeping aids and he had already ruled out getting so drunk until the point of passing out. He would never drink again, it had only hurt the person he loved the most in the world.

Luke rolled over in his bed for the 100th time that night. He squinted his eyes to get a better look at the clock.

1:20am.

He knew what would help him fall asleep. He knew it wasn’t rational, but he couldn’t keep doing this. He needed at least one good night of sleep. He needed it so badly.

Only wearing a pair of boxers, Luke quickly got dressed, donning a pair of sweatpants (that happened to be Reid’s) and an old high-school basketball t-shirt. He never turned on the lights because adjusting to them would take to long. He didn’t want to wake up anymore than he had to.

--

Reid was lying in bed, staring at the ceiling. When he had got home from Katie’s he took a shower and then crawled into bed. He knew it would be another long night and he didn’t have to be at work until 9:00, but he would probably go in at 6:00 anyways.

His eyes were heavy but his body would never fully shut down. He couldn’t take any sleeping pills because he never knew when there would be an emergency at the hospital. So he just laid there, trying not to let his mind wander to what he had said at Katie’s and even more importantly, to Luke.

His eyes had just started to slowly flutter as they tried hard to remain shut. He didn’t want to but did anyways, he turned to his side and looked at the time.

1:30am

He curled up on his side, trying not to think about how long the night was going to feel. As crazy as it sounded, and lately he had been sounding pretty crazy, he’d rather the clock read 5:00 because at least he could get up soon, now he was just going to have to lay there for another five hours instead of one.

Then he heard a knock on his door. At first he didn’t think he had heard anything, but then he heard it again, and it was louder than the first knocks. It wasn’t until the third series of knocks when he realized that somebody was actually at his door.

He rolled out of bed and pulled his sweatpants up a bit higher, he didn’t want them to be too low for whoever his late night guest was. He opted not to turn on any lights, didn’t want to have to let his eyes adjust. He walked over to the door and he heard whomever it was knock for a fourth time. Reid unlocked the deadbolt and then slowly pulled the door open.

“Luke.” Reid said flabbergasted.

“I…”

Reid pulled the door open further and allowed Luke to walk in. He knew why he was here. They both knew. They both needed it.

“…I can’t sleep.”

Reid smiled but he didn’t know if Luke could see it because of how dark it was.

“I might not be here in the morning when you wake up, I have an early appointment.” Reid said. The darkness was hiding how happy he felt inside. He was happy that Luke still wanted to be with him after what he had done to him.

Reid started to walk towards the bedroom and he could hear Luke’s footsteps behind him. Reid crawled into his side of the bed and Luke onto his. They weren’t touching, but their breathing soon picked up in unison.

“Thanks.” Luke said as he pulled the comforter tighter around his body. The thanks held more weight that Luke led on. Thanks for letting him in, thanks for apologizing in the most Reid-way ever for leaving him in the morning, thanks for letting him sleep, thanks for still wanting him around.

Luke was so thankful.

They both shut their heavy eyes and finally fell asleep.
