Prologue Reid had spent the past week secluded in his house. Since the night he had kicked Luke out, if he wasn’t at the hospital, he was at their…his house. He didn’t want to see Luke and he especially did not want to run into any of Luke’s relatives. He was lucky that it had been a relatively tame week at the hospital. It wasn’t until it had been almost a week when he finally called Katie back (she had been calling him every day) and told her she could come over.
--
“You kicked him out?” Katie asked. She was sitting on Reid’s couch and she could not believe what she was hearing.
“What else should I have done, he cheated on me and lied to me.” Reid grabbed a beer from the fridge and sat down next to Katie. Katie noticed how exhausted and tired Reid looked, as if he had not slept in a week (which he hadn’t). She did not even notice his hand until he brought his beer up to his lips to take a sip.
“REID!” Katie shrieked as she saw his bruised and bloodied hand. “What happened? Have you gone to the hospital? Have you seen a doctor?” His knuckles were black and blue.
“Katie, I am a doctor. And I’m fine.” He took a long, deep sip of his beer.
“That does not look fine to me. What happened?”
“Katie…” Reid said raising an eyebrow at her. He did not want to talk about it.
“You are the one who called me over here because you have been a hermit for the past week so we are going to talk about, all of it.”
“Fine. I punched a wall.”
“You did what?! That doesn’t sound like you at all. Your hands they are your life.”
“It isn’t me, and I know but Katie…I could barely be in the same room as him.”
“Talk to me. Start from the beginning.” She said giving him a small smile, “This will be therapeutic, you can’t keep it all bottled up like I know you want to.”
Reid was silent. He was not used to talking about his feelings…ever. Usually, he was so in sync with Luke that they never really had to talk about things. They knew when each other was angry and needed space or happy or frusterated or stressed or practically any emotion for that matter. They did not hide things from each other and they did not lie. He knew he needed to talk about it but talking about it made it real.
“Reid…”
Reid looked up at Katie. His lips were pressed thin against each other and his eyes were cheerless. Katie had never seen Reid so beat up about anything in their 3-year friendship.
“You would think that two and a half years would mean something.” Reid started. Katie nodded. She had had her fair share of failed relationships. Her relationship with Chris lasted just over a year and half before she realized that he had been lying to her. It started off with small things but than it grew into bigger things and soon it was too much for him to handle. She definitely knew what it was like to be lied to.
Reid took another sip of his beer.
“Luke started drinking again. Nothing crazy, he said that he was being responsible and only have a glass, but about three weeks ago he came back really drunk. He kept apologizing repeatedly but for nothing in particular. I just assumed it was because he had exceeded his limit and he felt guilty about it.”
Katie nodded. She had seen Luke drinking at a couple of Snyder get-togethers but hadn’t really thought much of it. She gave Reid a small smile. She knew this was tough for Reid. Reid rarely talked to anybody except Luke. Even though they were great friends, Reid kept the talking to a minimum. Luke was the only person Reid ever really opened up too. She wanted to encourage him but not scare him away from talking. He needed to talk about this. He couldn’t just hide from this like she knew he wanted to.
“When I tried to kiss him he pulled away and went straight to the shower. I did not think it was anything other than he did not want me kissing him while he tasted like alcohol because he was ashamed…” Reid stopped. He didn’t want to say it. If he said it, it became real.
“…But it was because he had kissed somebody else.” Katie finished for him.
Reid stopped for a couple of minutes. He was looking at his knuckles, picking at some of scabs that had started to heal.
“I had over heard Casey telling Alison at the hospital that Noah had told him that Luke had kissed him that night while he was drunk, and that he kissed him back. Casey also said that Noah had invited Luke back to his hotel room but that is when Luke stopped and left.”
Katie could see how painful it was for Reid to relive this memory. She could see how painful it was to even tell her.
Reid went silent. He wanted to punch another wall.
“Do you know what that feels like?” Reid suddenly let out raising his voice. He was so mad. “He fucking lied to me for two fucking weeks.”
“Reid, I know this is hard.”
“Katie, he fucking lied to me. I do not care about the kiss, people make mistakes, but it’s the fucking lying. I can’t, I won’t.”
Katie let Reid get it all out.
Reid saw his blackberry buzzing on the coffee table. He looked at it and saw that Luke was calling. He let it go to voicemail.
“Was that him?”
“Yeah.”
“You aren’t even going to talk to him?”
“What would I say? I don’t even want to hear his voice right now.”
“So are you guys over?”
“I don’t know…I don’t want to see him. I can’t.”
--
Luke placed his blackberry on the side table next to his bed. That was probably the 20th time that he had tried to call Reid and it again went to voicemail. He stopped leaving a message after the seventh no answer. If Reid wanted to talk to him he would answer or call him back. It made him sick knowing that he fucked up so bad.
“Luke, sweetheart, you need to get out of bed. You need to go outside. You need to do something.” Lily said pushing the door to her son’s room open.
“Mom” Luke groaned as his mother let light into his room. He had been in the seclusion of his dark room for almost a week and his eyes were sensitive to the bright lights. “I have the flu.”
“No you don’t sweetie. I’ve taken your temperature and you don’t have a fever.”
“Then why do I feel like I am going to die?”
“Baby, you guys are just going through a rough patch. For the past two and a half years you guys have been in the honeymoon phase. You guys will work through this, I promise.”
“You don’t know what I did to him. You don’t know the way he looked at me. He doesn’t want to see me ever again.”
“You guys love each other. You don’t break up at the first bump in the road.”
“Mom you don’t know what I did to him.” Luke repeated. He pulled the covers up over his head.
“Do you want to talk about it?”
“No.” was the muffled response from under the covers.
“I understand. Your father and I are here when you are ready to talk about it.”
Lily stopped and stared at her son who was hiding. She felt so bad for him but had no clue what had happened between them. She wanted to help her son but didn’t know where to start. It was hard because Luke was giving very little insight to the situation.
“Have you tried calling him.”
“A million times. He won’t answer.” Luke popped his head out. “Mom, what should I do.”
“You need to live your life. You need to get back into a routine. You cannot just hide in here. Nothing will ever get solved from being in the dark in your bedroom. You need to go to work tomorrow, either the foundation or at Grimaldi, but you need to do something.”
Luke just stared at her. She was right. He needed to retake control of his life.
“You just need to give him time to cool off…you as well.”
“Thanks Mom. I think you are right.”
“Wow, I think that is the first time in my life I have heard those words come out of your mouth.”
“If you don’t mind, I would like to be alone again. Think about tomorrow.”
“Sure baby.”
“Thanks again.”
Lily leaned over her son and gave him a small kiss on the forehead. She knew that Reid and Luke would be able to work through this.
Once Lily left, Luke started to think about how he would get Reid back. He knew that Reid found him irresistible so he would just have to be everywhere Reid was, force him to talk to him, force him to at least see him. Force Reid to miss him as much as he miss him.
They needed to figure this out because he could not go another day without Reid.
