Fic: Losing Ground [3]

Author: LMX
Fandom: Leverage
Rating: PG-13
Pairings: Nate/Sophie, Parker/Hardison(/Eliot)

AN: See part [2]. Additionally, I debated and debated on sign language. I don't know any, but I am aware that the syntax is different (condensed). For ease of reading, and to avoid me making obvious mistakes through my lack of knowledge I have replaced all syntax, and defined it using [] rather than "". If anyone has suggestions of better ways of doing this, would like to correct me in my usage or would like to tell me I'm an idiot for even trying, feel free to use the comment button.

"Hardison can't sleep on his own." Parker told Eliot seriously, looking tiny and pale in the huge hospital bed, dwarfed by the machinery around her. "He doesn't like not being able to hear danger coming. He's like a little rabbit. He needs to know when to run away. You have to be the one with the white tail." Parker looked all to eager, and Eliot's 'what the fuck' expression didn't seem to put her down any. "You have to stay with him." she added, rolling her eyes. She was beginning to think Eliot was just playing dumb. Well, not playing *dumb*, not like that. She knew he couldn't talk, she'd seen his tongue. Playing stupid would be better, he was playing stupid. Maybe she needed to talk straighter. "If you stay with him, you can listen out for danger, he can't do that because he can't hear."

Eliot gave her a flat look that she took to mean 'no'. She scowled at him.

"If he doesn't sleep you're going to end up fighting." Parker said. "And if you're fighting you can't convince him to talk for Sophie."

Eliot couldn't help looking startled. When had this become about Sophie? A minute ago he'd still been picturing a huge black rabbit with nervous eyes.

"I've been trying to convince him, Eliot. He doesn't have to not-talk, not like you. So I've been trying and trying. I even got him a clock and a little thing to put on his computer..." Parker trailed off. He considered asking what 'little thing' she meant, but decided his sanity was better off not knowing.

"She needs him. She needs him to make her laugh." Parker finished, and Eliot wished there wasn't a heart monitor telling him how upset she was, because he'd gone for years honestly thinking that she didn't get upset like other people.

Eliot had to admit, the house was getting freaking dour when ninety percent of the conversation was from Sophie or Nate. But then Alec hadn't exactly been on top form recently, in signed conversation or otherwise. Maybe if they could get some words out of him, get his confidence back, they could dig out some of that cocky humour. He was loathe to say it, but he was kinda missing the snark.

[You couldn't. How can I?] he asked.

Parker grinned, twinkle in her eye, and Eliot suddenly regretted asking.
