It was something that baffled Hardison, and niggled at him to the point of annoyance because he couldn't work it out.

A couple of months after he'd gotten out of hospital everyone had started signing to one another all the time, even when he wasn't in the room. At first it had just been Parker, in her usual way, refusing to speak and signing everything. She's been doing that even before he'd learned to read the damn things, so he didn't figure it was too weird beyond the usual Parker-level weird.

But then Sophie started signing what she was saying to Nate, and Eliot too, and while that might have just been Sophie trying to get some more practice in, suddenly everyone was doing it. All the time.

He decided it wouldn't be weird if it was just while he was in the room, 'cause he could see they were talking too, not just signing and it was reassuring to be able to look over from his computer and know what Sophie and Nate were talking about, or what Parker was plotting with Eliot. But he'd checked on the cameras, they'd started doing it all the time, even when he wasn't in the office.

Mostly they stopped when they were on a job, but since Hardison had finally taken the time to get the voice recognition software he'd been playing with for years running properly on the ear buds he knew what they were saying anyway. Them and, within a certain distance and level of accuracy, everyone around them. He'd made Sophie sit with him in front of the computer for hours, going through sound bites and teaching the computer what words sounded like in different accents.

It freaked him out a little, because this was something that had changed in the team, and he was still convinced that if he tried he should be able to imagine at any given moment that nothing at all was different. It was pretty much true, now. He had enough software running through any con that he wasn't cut off from the team at any point provided the ear buds were working. The only thing he couldn't do was express himself with quite the flair he was used to, resorting to text messaging and text calls in most cases to pass messages around from his end if he was alone in the van.

Still, he'd be at home playing WoW and he'd just glance across at the feeds from the offices and Eliot and Nate would still be there for whatever reason and he'd know straight away that they were going through Sophie's part of the plan again in the kind of detail they wouldn't in front of her, making sure she'd be safe if Eliot had to fight his way out. Making plans for distractions that they'd use and paths through the building that Sophie needed to know. He'd turn his attention back to the game, bemused, and leave the crazy folk to sign at one another.
