Episode Review: 7x01 - Truth and Consequences

Sep 29, 2009 11:20

There are many things I should be doing right now, including writing up my learning journal from last week's uni class, and also general work, seeing as how I am in the office and all.

But, NCIS is on in America tonight, and I really should put down some thoughts about the premiere of a week ago because otherwise I'll get all wrapped up in the ( Read more... )

I love you.

....

But yeah, Tony as the indulgent parent, spot on. Also, I always see him as the beta to Gobbs Alpha. Like he CAN lead, Wants to, and Knows how to, he just prefers when Gibbs does it. I think that why i hate fic with Tony having a different/new team.

That is a lovely comment to get to first thing on a Monday - actually, it's way past first thing, but Mondays never really get me to that wide-awake stage! ;-)

Yes, totally, he kind of plays a dual role in the team - vaguely irritating older brother who will take charge when he needs to, but is also perfectly happy to play beta to Gibbs' alpha - and he really is happy to do that - but also willing to step up and ... not quite be the mother, but at least be the slightly more accessible parent, who always has band-aids ready and knows where everything is. I'm convinced he does Gibbs' filing for him.

Ooh, Tony having a new team! I haven't quite decided where I fall on that, but I think if I had to pick, I'd be on your side - not really liking him having a new team unless it's done very well. I think it can be done well, and I've seen quite a bit of discussion in fandom over whether Tony should have his own team, because he's good enough at his job that really, it makes sense for him to get a new team and prove himself as a leader, not ( ... )

And Gibbs is superhuman, -gigglensort MWAHAHA-

I love the idea of Tony being the older brother. Cause I have them and I know for a fact that if someone was picking on me or etc I wouldn't got o my daddy(who is the most awesome ever)[read the Gibbs] I'd go to them and they take care of it.

That is totally Tony to me. I wish there was fic where Abby needed Tony to take care of somebody, and Kate found out and Abby had to explain that.

Older brothers are half parent/halfJERK. But no matter what they fight to the death for you, they teach you things without making you feel stupid cause that's they're job. That's where my love of Tony+McGee friendship stems from. -happy sigh-

I totally think Tony deserves his own team, I just don't think he wants a new team. When he takes over for Gibbs, hes still basically DiNozzo-Senior Field Agent, just a really stressed out senior field agent.

never really considered Jenny his boss either, I don't think, even during the Jeanne undercover opI love that. I agree completely. When he tells her he ( ... )

It's canon now, right:? ;-)

I'm an only child, so that's interesting to read! He is very much the big brother, and I love that: half parent, half jerk!

Yeah, the moments they've shown him being in charge, he always seems really stressed out by it. He seems a little more relaxed in some parts of Shalom and Escaped, but the strain definitely doesn't sit too happily with him. And I've never thought he needed to be needed the way Gibbs does, either. But, I do still think he'd be a great team leader. I just don't think he'd want another team. And I'm not that convinced, right now, that McGee wouldn't follow him, if he went.

He's just so very distressed at having to lie to Gibbs, and she actually calls him on who he calls his boss more than once - like in Hiatus. I think he respected Jenny, and recognised her authority, but Gibbs' would always override hers. And then I get to the question of just why he accepted that undercover op in the first place - and my brain is a bit overtaxed at the moment, saving you more inane chatter! ;-)

The second time I watched this ep I completely ignored the story and everyone else and concentrated completely on Tony/MW - The facial expressions he made especially the ones where he is in the background, his smile, his hair, the way his clothes sat perfectly on his shoulders. I was even converted to liking the shoulder holster, this one is so much better than the season 1 one. For obsessed MW/Tony fans this was a great epsiode to just watch/study him. ;-)

Ah, watching it that way is my favourite way to watch NCIS! ;-) I occasionally - mostly for capping purposes - watch the episodes while listening to music, or something, and I catch all kinds of expressions Tony's making in the background, and they're really great to catch. He's always doing something, or reacting - he's never out of character, or scene, which is great. I'm also very guilty of totally missing the plot because I'm too busy watching Tony, which is why I rarely have an issue with plots, because I'm so shallow! If there's a scene I particularly, and doubtless Tony will be in it, I actually have to rewatch it to concentrate on the other characters. OMG, I have problems ( ... )

I have missed the season 1 holster. And as a Psych fan - Det. Carlton Lassiter doesn't just always wear a shoulder holster, he has a fresh one every season! - I can say that you never, ever get tired of the shoulder holsters.

I would agree - and to that end, but trying to keep you spoiler-free - tonight's episode looks amazing, shoulder-holster-wise! ;-)

This is such a fun picspam -- it really makes me want to watch the episode again. Which is bad, because I don't have the tiiiiiime.

Tony looks so plucky under duress! Yeah, that's as insightful as I've got.

Well, okay, one other thing: I may be the only person in fandom who Ziva's idioms, but I'll spare you the rant on that, because it's boring.

Seriously, why is there never enough time in the world? I cannot wait for my weekend! The first free weekend I'll have had in like, a month, and once I get the uni work/stable clearout done, all I am going to do is stare at pretty, pretty pics of Tony.

Plucky under duress - that's an awesome description, I love it!

LOL, did you mean like or hate Ziva's idioms? Rant to me! You'll probably get a ramble right back, but I love discussing this show. I could talk (type) about it forever. ;-)

What the heck, I typed hate in there, I swear it! XD Okay, since you asked: I dislike Ziva's idioms because they are so very obviously reverse-engineered by English writers; most of them don't come off as at all convincing as an ESL speaker flubbing English idioms. Some of them don't even make remotely fly in that context because in order for the mistake/joke to be made in the first place, the speaker would have to have a full contextual/literal understanding of the idiom ... and if Ziva understood the idiom, why would she mess it up? Argh!

In fairness, they've gotten better at that over time, but I still have cumulative resentment.

I am scowling at livejournal on your behalf! I don't think you're the only person who hates her idioms, I've seen quite a few opinions on them being illogical and nonsensical - and I'd agree, I think, many of them are quite obviously the writers just going for a cute joke to run into whatever scene they've got lined up.

But I still quite like them - not so much because of the idioms themselves but because the actors play it quite well. And I love me some grammar-psycho!Tony. I think my favourite was when she actually gets it right, like when she says she is barking up the wrong tree, and Tony is all, "bush", and she's all disappointed. So while I would agree they're often unconvincing and very obviously engineered, I like the cute moments they create! :-)

Hi, I found my way to your journal through following many, many links to fic, and I just wanted to thank you for capping this episode and for your (hilarious) commentary and in-depth discussion of Tony's hotness ( ... )

LOL - you're totally welcome, I'm glad to hear that my rampant Tony-obsession is actually appealing, rather than just weird! ;-)

Oh, the shoulder holster! I really, really hope you're right and we get more of Tony the Cop this season, because I love that part of him. Episode 2 was obviously great for the whole cop thing, and the fact that he still refers to hismelf as a cop, not a fed, and I'm going to join you in hoping that the recurrence of the holster in Ep 3 and also, the whole semi-tutoring he did with the cute young rookie, means they're really going to make an issue of it. And yes! I much prefer the writers/showrunners focusing on that, rather than the Gibbs-DiNozzo (non) similarity. Because you're so right, they're really not alike at all - Gibbs never talks, ever, Tony talks all the time, even if he doesn't say very much; Gibbs is pretty much furious, all the time (I think) whereas Tony has got next to no temper whatsoever. And there are a thousand other differences, I'm sure. Although, saying that I loved the same-wrods ( ... )

I vacillate about when Tony is at his hottest. When he’s decked out in shoot 'em up gear he is of course incredibly hot (he can point his gun at me any day, ahem), but I also enjoy seeing him with a trench coat and earwig, looking all federal agent-y. But then he takes off the trench and the rolls up his sleeves, and we’re back to Tony the Cop! Rawr. And don’t even get me started on the nice suits. I have such a kink for richboy!Tony. I really hope they send him undercover on an assignment where he has to act like an obnoxious rich person and order pate and make fun of the uneducated peons. And then everyone on the team could be shocked at this previously unseen side of Tony, except for McGee who would probably roll his eyes and go on and on about how he just knew it ( ... )

Part 1 - I'm sorry, it's lengthy! :-) little_ozzo October 13 2009, 10:45:36 UTC
It's a difficult call to make - he's so hot in so many different instances, in so many different ways! Hell to the yes about the running around with a gun hotness - I particularly like him in MW's wikipedia page picture, in the POLICE vest, and in that classic promo pic from S1 or 2, with Kate, where he's crouching low with his gun and following the pair of them through what looks like a train yard. (I would link to pics, but I'm at work and pics are not allowed, so I'd probably link you to somehting really dull or porny by accident. Grr.) But then I love him casual but still totally designer dress-down, like this episode I was watching the other day that I totally can't remember - fail - where he had a black shirt tucked into tight jeans, and I just about passed out. Oh, and the suits! I'm loving the look they're going for so far this season, of the really nice, well-fitting suits with a crisp shirt underneath. And the really nice jackets he's been wearing, too. OMG, I'd watch that episode on repeat/save that fanfic to my favourites ( ... )
