I'm a native English speaker* trying to learn Hindi on my own, without an institutional course -- I'd love one, mind you, but there aren't any that are affordable in the Bay Area (California, USA). Hindi is next on my list! I don't even have any options in my area, let along expensive ones, so I have something from Living Languages. But I haven't started it because I'm still on Japanese.

Also trying to teach myself Hindi. I have Pimsleur CDs and listen in the car for a little while. It doesn't take long before I've reached my limit. I need to look around the local Indian community and see what I can find. At least trot out my extremely limited vocabulary at the local groceries or restaurants, etc.

learn_hindi used to be a fairly active group, but it's been rather quiet of late. Maybe you could help kick it back to life?

I saw your name somewhere earlier... possibly in this very community, and loved it. I have a friend whose real, honest to goodness last name of birth was Muckenfuss. How awesome is that? I will go post my same intro in that community. I like language learning of all kinds, though.

Hey! Nice to see you over here, too. :)

As far as language schools in India go, have you read Dreaming in Hindi? I actually didn't like it much, but it's a memoir that details a woman's experience taking a Hindi class in India (somewhere in Rajasthan, IIRC).
