Disappointment abounds: HetLex rant

Sep 20, 2009 16:21

Nine months ago- a pregnancy away- alexanderland was born and I hate to see all my fears have turned out to be true.

As an avid reader and writer of fanfiction it had come to my attention that there are very few blogs and forums devoted to hetLex fiction and art and thought it was a good idea to do something about it.. Thus Read more... )

Oh, babe, I wish I could offer words of encouragement, but i know it's tough. Slash seems to dominate the Lexverse, I know it.

Personally, the only Lexhet I write is one with an OC of mine, and it's something I do for me, so I've never posted it, although I've been adding to it for over 4 years.

All I can say is, and this is a rule I adopt myself, is write for YOU. If you love it, do it. If someone else likes it, bonus. I know it's not much, but it helps when non-popular pairings pop up and inspire my muse, hehe!

*kiss and hug*

Hang in there!

Oh, I keep writing! Let´s face it, any artistic creative is born as out of a selfish need, if you will, and I won´t give up writing just because a great number of people see Lex almost exclusively as slash material ( ... )

Oh, that is just weird!! I'd never think that someone would be ashamed of reading HET!! Rape fic, incest, stuff like that, ok, I can understand, but Het? It boggles the mind, babe!!

You know I love that fic of yours I read, and I'm not ashamed to say it!! *huff*

*big hug*

While in the past gay was taboo, in this day and age it seems het is something to be ashamed of. Go figure.

I´m glad you enjoyed that ficlet, by the way. ;)

Hi, I can't believe that I managed to miss your post announcing Alexanderland, but apparently I did. I'll have to go look at it when I can steal some time. My online time is fairly limited since I have to find wireless spots and places to hangout and use it ( ... )

I'm mostly into Clex, as you know, but I like Chlark and Chlex as well. I tried Naughty Seductions after you were kind enough to tell me about it, but there didn't seem to be much new stuff posted and...it may easily just be me being clueless, but the site didn't seem very user friendly.

Maybe you joined at a time when people were busy with college or on holidays. The community is still very active and there are new stories posted and updated practically every day. As to the trouble navigating it, maybe it´s got to do with the fact that forums work different from blogs. I´m more of a forum-creature than a blogger myself. I prefer it because so far, it´s what´s worked best for me.

But as long as what you write pleases you and you enjoy doing it, keep writing. There really aren't as many Clex readers/writers still running around as you seem to feel.

Surfing the net and checking out blogs I got the opposite impression. Compare the amount of feedback and you´ll see what I mean.

That pool party has gradually been getting smaller and ( ... )

*hugs* Personally I cant understand nor want to understand people's need to fanon slash every male character out there, its a plague that has ruined fans of het (and fans of canon'verse) getting involved online. I see it as just too hot guys that have no sexual attraction to each other getting it on and are written OOC just because people read too much into the 'subtext' or see things that arent there which makes me question what show are they watching lol.

I too feel isolated and rejected. I'm not a sheep by nature so I'm not gonna be ashamed of my shipper preferences and jump on the majority bandwagon. At least the minority has less wank ;)

*sigh* yeah het is like taboo nowadays, they'll go for rape, MPREG, incest but het? nope. :( makes me sad, het is so classic.

I'd love to affiliate your alexanderland comm with sv_multishipprs :D

Well, I've been called a lot of things in fandom, but now I'm part of a plague. Thanks. That's new. :-)))

Really, I'm not mad, just curious. How does my reading and writing and discussing Slash stop you or anyone else from reading and writing and discussing het?

Everyone´s free to write, read, and watch what they please. This is a free world after all. I use that freedom to choose not to ship slash, but that doesn´t mean I´m against others enjoying it. I don´t expect slashers to justify themselves just as I don´t feel the need to give explanations for my not shipping slash and preferring het. Just like you, I don´t believe the existence of one group nuliifies another.

It is true, though, that being a hetLex fan can make one feel a pariah many a time. :(

don't know if this will make you feel any better but -- interaction is down all over the internet. People aren't even BLOGGING about their favorite shows anymore (at least, not in my circles), much less writing or reading fan fiction.

People are very reticent to leave feedback even when they´re reading; this is widespread even on blogs and forums that have noting to do with TV shows. I´ve got a lot of experience with art networks due to my mum and it´s exactly the same thing.

On forums is really simple to get to know how many people have not only visited but stayed a long while on a thread, then leave it and start with something else you wrote. I call them "chain-readers". Very disrespectful people who lurk, seem to be enjoying what you´re doing and don´t even have the manners to introduce themselves to the community.Lots of forum users who are regular visitors have 0 messages.

Even in really ACTIVE groups, you are lucky to get three comments anymore. I don't know what has happened, but it sucks, because when you write something ( ... )

I run a forum too and it's... dead.

Mine is virtually dead too. However, the Italian ones I co-administrate are alive and kicking, and Naughty-Seduction- of which I´m a member- is very active; members leave regular feedback on fanfic posts. Still, there´s a large number of people who lurk and vegetate. Let´s face it, when it comes to feedback, it´s always the same audience that contributes comments.

I don't know what it is with people in fandom at large these days. At one time, it seemed that everyone was interested in joining new communities and trying new things. Now, it seems that to me that most people hang out in one tiny corner of fandom and rarely venture an opinion or post anything even in communities they belong to. I realize that a dozen people are now going to tell me I'm wrong, and I hope I am, but that's the feeling I get lately ( ... )

I answered to this in my previous message, just before your comment uploaded. lol.

People seem to be lazy and disrespectful on the net nowadays, just as they´re in real life.Very few people stand up to say what they think, support what they believe or support their fellow-men. That´s one of the reasons things are going down the drain in our society.

Why the heck would Slash fans be ashamed of reading a het story? Are they nuts? I'm a huge Slash fan, but I read whatever I friggin' well please, and don't read what I don't want to read. I read your Chlex stories and I like them. Why the heck ( ... )

I totally agree. Good manners are an endangered species these days. People seem to think that bad manners are more honest, or something, I don't know. It's depressing.

I'm glad you don't think my writing sucks. Neither does yours. :-)))

Yes, and they call themselves " transgressors". What transgression is there in doing what most people do? Hey, WE are the real transgressors.I´m not a relativist, particularly when it comes to what I consider to be good manners and values. Good heavens! Rudeness doesn´t equal honesty.Yes, we live in a very depressing world indeed. Luckily there are still people out there who aren´t part of this mass- although what stands out seems to be always the negative.
