Day 5 - Prompt: Write a story using an imaginary color
Setting: The as yet un-named Magitech-Fantasy universe Nyalla the catgirl lives in. Uncertain time after the 30 Days, Day 30 story for Saying Goodbye.
The cavern was cool and dry, which suited Nyalla just fine. The Major had been following clues out into the desert and any excuse to get out of the sun or sunbaked ship was welcome.
While the outer section was rough and natural a sudden flat wall sealed off the back. Untold years of dust covered a mosaic of tiny tiles and even unwashed they could all see it would be a riot of clashing colors. Standing in front of it the Major had been staring at the wall for almost a quarter hour when he called for everyone to move back.
"Alsa with me, everyone else be prepared for anything."
Nyalla could see both of them collecting arcane power then feeding it slowly and carefully into... something that she couldn't see. After another quarter hour they stopped. Alsa shrugging and giving the wall a glare.
"Nothing. The rest must not have lasted, we'll just have to break through--"
A trickle of sparks appeared at the top of the wall, slowly rolling down leaving the tiles clean and gleaming as they traveled. The mosaic still a crazy scattering of color so far as she could see. But Nyalla could see Gunther suddenly lean forward squinting at the wall and grinned at the human.
"Don't tell me you're into this kind of nonsense art."
"There's writing up there!"
It took a few seconds before Gunther realized what Nyalla could see right away. What he'd said had echoed within the cavern and had everyone staring at him now instead of the wall. The Major and Alsa gave the wall another look and turned back to him.
"You see writing?"
"It's these eyes." Gunther tapped a finger above his nose, right between the eyes it had taken Nyalla a week to get used to. Bright green and no matter what the light never a visible pupil. "They don't see colors the same. Some of those tiles are... Well, I don't have a name for the color. It's kind of red, kind of blue, and only shows up on things that are spell touched."
Walking up to the wall he pointed to a tile. A tile that looked yellow to Nyalla. As he traced above the tiles none seemed quite the same color to her. A few were shades of green, orange, black, a few did look red and even blue to her. But none looked to have anything in common to her.
"Well. In that case what does it say?"
"Sorry sir. I can tell there are letters here, but it's no language I know."
Nyalla found a seat while Gunther carefully copied down the letters. It was slow going as he double checked and carefully took down each. But she didn't mind, the longer this took the longer she got to stay out of the heat.
Time for a nap.
