We've been on a bit of a Hannibal kick lately, prompted by both the new season's starting and our discovering (on our anniversary, no less) that Silence of the Lambs is now on Netflix Instant. So we'd seen many things, but we hadn't yet seen ... Hannibal Rising.

The latest season of American Horror Story has gotten me to thinking about something I feel it does very right that is very, very close to something a lot of other horror does very wrong, and that has to do with how it understands that women are monsters.

( babbling and some very vague spoilers, I suppose )

So I finally -- yes, finally -- got around to watching the third season of Game of Thrones! And I have some thoughts about it, so I thought I'd put them here! And if you like seeing a woman flail textually about something she only half-understands, well, you've come to the right place!

One of the things that bugs me about nearly all the TV I watch is the recurring assumption that Christian = Catholic. Sure, there's specificity when specificity needs to be had, but if characters go into a random church, it'll be a Catholic church; if someone needs to find and/or dress up as a religious official, the official in question will be a ( Read more... )

Everything I knew about Game of Thrones/Song of Ice and Fire prior to watching the series:

• There's palace intrigue and people trying to be in the king in a medieval fantasy setting.
• Some incest happens somewhere in there.
• A guy gets a blowjob from another guy.
• The credits are cool, and maybe complicated? Unsure.

The best possible compliment I think I can give 'A Study in Pink', the first epsiode of the Stephen Moffat Sherlock Holmes reboot, is that it's pretty much like watching 'The Empty Child'/'The Doctor Dances', only instead of Jack, Rose, and the Doctor, it's Sherlock Holmes and John Watson.
