Our beloved movie rental had a nice cover piece in the New Haven Register. The owner has it exactly right: the personal interaction, with recommendations and a genuine sense of movie love, are exactly what keeps me coming back there (even though we have plenty of our own movies to watch).

Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home [1986]. In order to save Earth from a menacing, uncommunicative, supreme alien force, the crew of the Enterprise is forced to go back in time.( Back in time, to rewrite the script of Star Trek I )

Star Trek III: The Search for Spock [1984]. Kirk and crew return to the Genesis planet to reunite Spock's spirit with his body.( You didn't actually think that was the end of Spock, did you? )

Shorts part of the Boy Crush compilation of gay shorts. Series as a whole: 5/10.

Summer [2006]. Two best friends walk through a wooded park, talking about sex with girls, and then one kisses the other. Nothing too profound here, acting decent but not stellar. A completely standard story of kissing the best friend you've secretly had a crush on. No ( Read more... )

La belle et la bête (Beauty and the Beast) [1946]. Jean Cocteau's version of the classic fairy tale.( emotionally thrilling )

Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan [1982]. Captain Kirk encounters an old and bitter enemy, Khan. Khan (Ricardo Montalban) and his people were marooned on a planet and suffered as the planet became increasingly inhospitable.( Khan!!!! )

Yet more evidence that the MPAA is whacked out of their mind deciding on movie ratings:

“The Hunger Games” is rated PG-13. (Parents strongly cautioned.) Brutal child-on-child violence and death.

Compare that with It's Complicated, one of the mildest movies I've seen recently, which received an R rating simply because Meryl Streep takes a drag of ( Read more... )

The remaining films we saw in the first half of January consisted of a couple "classic" films from my childhood and just before.

Top Gun [1986]. An elite fighter pilot tries to be top of his class.( Whooshes by so fast in hopes you don't notice what you actually saw )

I ordered four Blu-Rays from Amazon.com.uk a couple weeks ago. I wanted two of them really badly (a Polish one and an Asian one) and threw in the other two for good measure since I was already paying for shipping.
