Fic: Crossroads (POTC)

Title: Crossroads
Fandom: POTC2 (movie spoilers)
Rating: PG13-ish.
Summary: One-shot. Tia Dalma, Will Turner. Not so much a touch of destiny as a chance encounter.
A/N: This my first story in this fandom. It's a little strange, and pretty far outside my normal scope, but my interest in vodou and New Orleans history caused the story to write itself ( Read more... )

I loved this. From the beginning of my participation in this fandom i've loved fic that interweaves the characters with actual historical figures--babyfic or no, i love the idea of a connection with Marie Laveau, and the posing of the idea that Will, smarting from his witnessing of Elizabeth's and Jack's kiss aboard the Pearl, might seek some sort of solace from Tia Dalma. I'm particularly fond of the intro, the way you describe her as someone who walks between the spaces of the known and defined. Thank you for posting it!

I'm completely new to this fandom, and this is one of those stories that came to me from nowhere. I'd imagined that other fic (of which I've read very little) would take into account some of the historical aspects, but until you mentioned "fic that interweaves the characters with actual historical figures", it didn't really occur to me what a natural pairing it is. (Needless to say, I'm a history buff.) So, yeah, I'm going to have to delve into some reading of my own. :)

Thanks again.

Oh, I like this a lot. Intriguing idea for Marie Leveau's origins.

Thanks for taking the time to comment. I guess the weird subject matter/spin makes this story have a pretty self-limiting audience, but I'm glad some people are 'getting' it. :)

Glad you enjoyed it.

Where Will is concerned, my favorite pairing for him is with Jack. But I liked this story, because it's a departure for Will and, as someone else stated, it's good to see that what's sauce for the goose is also good for the gander (or vice versa, perhaps). The fact it involves Tia Dalma makes my toes happy - I really like her as a character.

I'm new to this fandom and still not really sure where my allegiances lie (I'm a bit of a tough sell for the most part anyway). Will was mostly in the right place (emotionally and geographically) at the right time for my purposes.

I'm getting some strange Will/Norrington nudging in the back of my brain, though. Both try to be good men and tend to get kicked in the teeth for it; both spurned by the same woman, and all that.

In any case, thanks for taking the time to read and comment. :)

Yeah, Willington is my second-favorite pairing, to be honest. Haven't written any of that, yet - I stick mostly to J/W. I believe you can like more than one pairing involving the same character - and I like Will and James for the same reason you mention. The idea of them getting together as sort of a "we don't need you" to Elizabeth is appealing to me.

Are you new to the fandom because of the second movie coming out, and did you see the first one when it came out in 2003 or just recently in anticipation of this one?

I absolutely loved the first movie. Went into it cold, not expecting much, and was blown away. My fandom/writing, however, has mostly been limited to serial television--movies generally don't do it for me, and I knew nothing about DMC until I saw it (zero spoilers), and was similarly blown away. Only this time, I've reached a point where I've gotten so disenchanted with the current television offerings I haven't written anything in months. DMC definitely grabbed me. I didn't see it till this weekend, though, hence my sudden burst of enthusiasm ( ... )

Kieyra, this was beautiful and lyrical and gorgeous. It kicked me in the teeth, how much depth you gave to Tia Dalma, combined with the depth of your research (seriously, I'm not about to nitpick obscure Jamaican vodun versus Haitian, LOL), and just how awesomely fitting that ending was.

I love the image of Will with the last scrap of boy burned out of him...because that's exactly how I saw him at the end of the movie, thunking that knife into the table. I loved the tone, the narrative, and Tia's *voice*.

This may be one of my most favorite POTC fics that I've ever read!

In regards to 'shipperness...I'm not going to try to sway you in any particular direction. I've found that's kind of useless. Just keep writing and I will love it because it's you doing the writing!

I should mention that your 'tiny bit of Will ficcage' was what kind of sealed the deal on my writing this story. (While you didn't actually have them interact, you did juxtapose Will/Dalma textually and since my mind was already going there...doom.)

Um. Guh. Forgot the knife thing. Gawd. (I wish you were feeling a little better this week, would love to discuss various ship dynamics with you. I wrote out some of my thought processes last night, then ended up deleting the entry because within five minutes I already disagreed with all of my own opinions.)

Tia's *voice*Thanks--that was a tricky one. I rewatched her scenes, and aside from the occasional thing where they try to mess with her grammar ("him" instead of "his", etc), she's quite articulate, in a formalized, staccato kind of way. It's the actress's delivery that that's a whole other kettle of fish. I wouldn't ( ... )

I would love to discuss the dynamics of the movie and the characters with you. I just wish I had the Internet access at home to DO so! I'm so frustrated because I have all this fannish meta and all these thoughts and no real ability to put them anywhere (not that this seems to be stopping me).

You're very welcome for everything. I'm glad that my Will ficcage could even in part inspire such awesome fic from you!

I can call ConEd and tell them to get their shit together so we can mindmeld, stat. Heh.

(I'm so excited to just be excited about a fandom again, and going through to cap stuff just made it that much 'worse'...so much visual symbology they threw in, like the point in the film where Will starts wearing black and goes a bit Dread-Pirate-Roberts on us, the different scenes with Elizabeth's girly wedding dress (in the end, it's underwater and sinking), lots of little reaction shots that don't make sense until later...I'm so going to see this on the big screen soon.)

So. Yeah. I need you!
