Original fiction meme - Day 19

19. Favorite minor that decided to shove himself into the spot light and why!

Ewan Doyle! Who didn't even have that name at first. Who didn't even have a name at all, come to think of it, he was just some random geek-technomancer type in the middle of a group picture (I drew that one when I first started thinking about the story that would become Was, back in the spring of 2008; only later did I dub that guy "Echoes"). Then, when I started writing that story, on Nov. 1st, 2009, I needed some Anima Mundi fellow to discover a corpse, and I thought, OK, why not him? Basically, he had no predefined role in the story, except to unearth that red herring of a corpse, and somehow be the "youg'un" who doesn't know much to the world of Spirits, and thus needs Ring to explain a few things to him... and to the reader at the same time, ha ha.

And then he started dipping Brie cheese in a Nutella jar. And using "fuck" just like some people use punctuation, at least when he was under pressure. And he developed funny quirks and geeky-snarky inner commentary. And he bloody knew his shit, too. Besides, I just love geek characters. Before I knew it, I was truly, sincerely liking that guy, and having real fun writing scenes which he was part of. Not to mention that he's also an interesting bridge between "seasoned" Anima Mundi agents, like Ring and Zerstörer, and "real rookie types" like Lou (and Lyle, too, to a certain extent). And did I forget to say that he also has a deeper backstory than it seems at first?

By the way, he did exactly the same thing to me when I adapted him for Mage: the Ascension! "Oh, let's put some existing character to recycling... Hey, why not Echoes, he'd make a fine Virtual Adept, there's probably not much meat for development in him, but it's only for 2 or 3 games, so he should last me long enough..." Yeah. Right. And he absolutely did not fuel me with more ideas for Was in turn. Not at all.
