Original fiction meme - Day 8

8. What’s your favorite genre to write? To read?

I like writing stories that mix magic and technology/science/the modern world. Although I used to read a lot of LOTR-like fantasy and Dune-like science-fiction when I was younger, my tastes have changed over the years, at least as far as fantasy is concerned, and now I tend to be way more drawn towards, let's say, urban fantasy, or what might be called science-fantasy. When I look at my stories, it's always the same dynamics:
  • Eien may look like typical fantasy at first, but in fact, it's laced with psychic powers obtained through genetic mix-up; "elves" that aren't elves, but humans with a slightly different genotype due to the influence of external factors; old technology considered as 'magic', from the world before it got destroyed a first time (I guess you could say Eien is some kind of post-ap setting... long, long past the apocalyptic part ^^). The Kazaris are pretty much scientists rather than sorcerers, viewing the world through concepts of atoms and energies, and the stones they use to enhance their powers are life forms based on silicone instead of amino-acids. As for the people from Mornen, they're heirs to the Old World's technology more than anything else. And the Wall of Silence is all but magical.
  • Was is urban fantasy very much inspired by my regular RPG games set in WiWo's World of Darkness. Honestly. People who rewrite the code of Reality using computers and mobile phones. Crazed immortals that keep smiling even when they're torn to pieces, or tear someone to pieces, and then puts themselves back togeter. Cab drivers who try to understand what it is to be human, and how to become one. Necromancers with a daily job as forensic scientists at Scotland Yard. And an organization of mages who use Glock 17 guns loaded with spell-bullets. Not to mention ghosts trying to punch a hole between both worlds right in the heart of London. Yeah. Not urban at all. ;)
  • Our Darker Purpose is closer to a foray into steampunkish fantasy, but a lot of elements are still influenced by science. While the mages use their blood to cast most of their spells, they also mix that with scientific research: chemistry to produce the 'moon powder' to make people dream; airships flying thanks to the specific properties of hydroquintessence-hydrogen laced with energy from ley lines; or the Impulsion/Leech weapon loaded into the HMS Edinburgh airship. Same goes for the thanatic rifles, powered by the Chosen Ones' blood, in order to be able to destroy ghosts rather than physical targets.
As for what I like reading... Well, pretty much the same, although I'll add to this 19th century anglo-saxon novels. I just can't help loving Jane Austen, Thomas Hardy or George Eliot.
