How often do you change the backgrounds on your computers, and what sort of stuff do you usally have there?

As for me:

WORK:  picture of Meredith roller skating from last May

LAPTOP: Picture of the twins from last year, looking very much like themselves…

HOME UBUNTU:  Comet McNaught over a sunset, with lots of dark, layered clouds.  (I tend to ( Read more... )

I change my backgrounds about every other week (or less). I'd been receiving a number of background images from tor.com, textless versions of SF/F book covers. The one I currently have up is from Michael Kaluta, of a woman on a pegasus, about to fire an arrow at something behind/above her. I waffle between a quiet tiled background (darker colours), or full-screen images. I was cycling through WoWarcraft stuff last year. I had a map of Caid on my work computer, several years ago.
Since I work from home, the desktop I have via remote access is just plain blue. I probably could change it, but I just haven't bothered. Now, I think I shall. Heh.

Love Kaluta's stuff. If my background is too *busy*, it's too distracting. A plain one is equally distracting.

I use the full version of this userpic (I cropped the blob of moon off the left edge to make the userpic square-ish).

I don't know if you've seen the full-sized version:

For some reason, my virus-protection stuff is having a fit over the big version.

Work Computer - never changes, work set it

Home Laptop - the Chaiten Eruption / Lightning Storm

Home Server - nothing - it never runs a GUI

Home Desktop - I think it's plain blue? It's been a while since I actually looked at it.

I tend to keep the same image for extended periods of time.

You don't use your desktop?

In our house, there are four computers. A laptop, mine, Susan's, Mere's.

Mere's and mine are dual-boot, and her Ubuntu setup has two main accounts - mine and hers - as does the Windows side. (The Windows account is left over from when that computer was mine, but I use both the Ubuntu and Windows accounts on hers.)

My PC has a 'Mere' account, but she never uses it. The laptop has accounts for Susan, me, and Mere, along with the actual owner (my aunt-in-law).

The Server will have a GUI'd Ubuntu, though. I can't stand not having one.

I don't use the desktop very often - it's got significantly less horse-power than the laptop, and using it means I'm upstairs and iraunink is downstairs. Really, about the only time I do use it is when I really need the dual-monitors attached to it, or if I'm doing something on the server (which is in the same room) and I'm waiting for it to finish doing something. It does have multiple accounts on it - bernesemntdog uses it much more frequently than I do, usually when he and >lj user="kosmickitten"> are over and borrowing our internet. She uses iraunink's, he uses the desktop ( ... )

Understood. Ubuntu's gotten a lot better on wireless as time has gone on. When was the last time you checked on this?

I use Webshots. Nearly all of my downloaded pictures are sunsets, flowers, landcapes, rocks, etc. without people or manufactured things in them. I have a few tumbledown old houses and sites like Angkor Wat, though.

I only have one computer. It's usually set to whatever astronomical phenomenon I've been fascinated with recently. Right now, it's M13. My old standard is NGC 1300; others have included M51, the Pleiades, the Milky Way and whatever else struck my fancy for a month or two.
