I've been wanting to see a total solar eclipse since I was knee-high to a colorful expression. When I was a wee lad I had an astronomy book, and a total solar eclipse was among the cool things I wanted to see. I was testing out my solar viewing and photography today, and caught a nice string of sunspots. They'll be visible during the partial phases of the eclipse, and will be fun for marking the moon's progress.

A penumbral eclipse is the lamest sort of eclipse there is. Essentially, the moon just skims the outer fuzzy edge of the earth's shadow (the penumbra) and you can barely even tell anything is odd. I was at the library for this eclipse, and every 15 or 20 minutes I went outside with my camera, zoomed in, and took a picture (if the clouds weren't ( Read more... )
