I don't know who "Nia Sykes" is, beyond "moron from San Francisco who thinks it's fun to trash Oakland."

I'm quite aware of what the police did wrong. What I'm angry at is the harm the rioters are doing to the good people of Oakland, who are not only not the BART Police, but have no control over anything the BART police do (as the BART Police don't work for the City of Oakland).

Exactly. The BART police work for BART. I don't think it's such a grand idea that the rioters are asking for the BART police to not carry guns, either. It IS Oakland we're talking about.

The cop who did the shooting is an imbecile and a murderer: I hope he's prosecuted, convicted, and sentenced to serious time. The video clearly shows that his fellow police officers did nothing either to arrest him or to try to save the suspect's life -- they are accessories after the fact and also deserve to do time. At the very least they should all be kicked off the force.

Depriving the BART police of their guns is just plain stupid, so I agree with you on that. Why should all BART riders suffer an increased risk of attack by violent criminals just because of a few stupid cops?

It's occurred to me that the earlier poster may have been talking about the stupid behavior of the Oakland police (who swept up passerby into the mass of rioters, creating a potentially very dangerous situation). Well, of course the O.P.D. is fairly inept, but none of this excuses in the least the actions of the rioters.

...it's like a lot of things. The local "fight the power" idiots decided that they were going to show off how "virtuous" they are. The people that suffer are small business, people that have scrimped and saved and took a chance to try and create a new business.

Especially in that area-quite a few of the people are taking huge risks with their time and money.

Could hang all the protesters that did property damage from the nearest tree, and I wouldn't mind except as a public hygiene issue.

That rather insults the memory of real lynching victims, doesn't it?

Rule #1 behind breaking the law: Don't reveal your identity. Or at least do it in a way they won't find out about it for years and years.

Stupid people.

It's also occurred to me that, if I were "Nia Sykes," it would worry me that I was the one named participant in the riot, and hence someone on whom the various injured parties might seek revenge. Heck, I'd be glad if something happened to her. Be a good way of reminding potential rioters that they're not the only ones who can be violent!

I could only read about half of this and skim the rest. It was making me ill.

I have never understood the mentality that says just because you have a grievance (legitimate or not) against someone or some situation, it is therefore acceptable to run the streets and generally behave like savages. And if it's toward people who have nothing to do with your original problem? It doesn't matter. What's important is you know, EXPRESSING YOURSELF - in whatever way you see fit.

Seriously though, isn't evolution supposed to go UPWARD?

You've never been to Los Angeles after a Lakers home game, have you?

If the Lakers lose, there's a riot and the city around the sports arena burns in revenge.

If the Lakers win, there's a riot and the city around the sports arena burns in celebration.

And anyone who comments about this is RACIST RACIST RACIST...

It happens that often? I thought it would only be for major championships. (Not that it's acceptable then either!)

I swear, this world is NUTS.
