Woke up early this morning to the following. One of the best summaries is by various wrters of the San Francisco Chronicle in the hilariously-titled "Protests over BART shooting turn violent" (http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?file=/c/a ( Read more... )

I'm quite aware of what the police did wrong. What I'm angry at is the harm the rioters are doing to the good people of Oakland, who are not only not the BART Police, but have no control over anything the BART police do (as the BART Police don't work for the City of Oakland).

Exactly. The BART police work for BART. I don't think it's such a grand idea that the rioters are asking for the BART police to not carry guns, either. It IS Oakland we're talking about.

The cop who did the shooting is an imbecile and a murderer: I hope he's prosecuted, convicted, and sentenced to serious time. The video clearly shows that his fellow police officers did nothing either to arrest him or to try to save the suspect's life -- they are accessories after the fact and also deserve to do time. At the very least they should all be kicked off the force.

Depriving the BART police of their guns is just plain stupid, so I agree with you on that. Why should all BART riders suffer an increased risk of attack by violent criminals just because of a few stupid cops?

It's occurred to me that the earlier poster may have been talking about the stupid behavior of the Oakland police (who swept up passerby into the mass of rioters, creating a potentially very dangerous situation). Well, of course the O.P.D. is fairly inept, but none of this excuses in the least the actions of the rioters.

Agreed.

I agree wholeheartedly. The local government could simply allow the citizens to bear arms freely. Then it wouldn't make much difference whether the BART cops were armed or not. :)
