Morons Riot in Oakland - One of Them is "Nia Sykes"

Woke up early this morning to the following. One of the best summaries is by various wrters of the San Francisco Chronicle in the hilariously-titled "Protests over BART shooting turn violent" (http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?file=/c/a ( Read more... )

Just like a chimpanzee troop on a rampage... anonymous January 8 2009, 16:58:46 UTC
The radio talk show reports of this on morning drive-time should really have intercut the "interviews" with the rioters with chimpanzee hoots, race card be damned.

And Oakland's been a third world country with a US zip code for some time; when I was there for an event in the Seventies, it was called "The Combat Zone"; only time I ever got ripped off while travelling (at a McDonald's, somebody snatched my burger while my back was turned for a moment).

Riots are really stupid (has there ever been such a thing as a "sensible riot") but the government there really seemed to have brought it on themselves... for a WEEK there's been clearcut evidence that an officer committed at LEAST manslaughter, if not murder, and he's not under arrest facing trial, but is instead on "administrative leave"?
No.
I am sorry for the random violence but holycrap, I blame the police on this. What the hell did they expect would happen?

Also, LOLOL, geez, some stuff got smashed, so far no one was HURT it looks like; so, rioters are apparently more self-controlled than the BART police!

I have to agree that, while many of the rioters are criminal and should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law, wishing someone would kill them is not the moral high ground, here. Nor is it how a civilized society is expected to behave.

The Civilized Man is eventually doomed to fall before the axe of The Barbarian. -- Robert E Howard

And are you familiar with the words "Vadhagh" and "Mabden"?
The Vadhagh were civilized -- so civilized they never noticed the Mabden barbarians.

And the fix is what- to become barbarians ourselves?

Even if that were true, this isn't productive barbarism. The productive course is to somehow disincentivize this behavior- most obviously, by following our laws and prosecuting these people. Wishing they'd die doesn't do squat to fix it. It gains us nothing, and it forfeits our ability to say, "We're on the sane, law-abiding side, here."

Everything dies. Every society, civilized or not, falls eventually. But many of those that do fall to the barbarians first lost sight of what made them different- and they fell from within.

I don't want my neighbors to believe wanton destruction is the way democracy works- but neither that, nor this hate-wishing, are appropriate.

I hate those who approve of and participate in riots. And recognizing them as enemies is the first step toward combating them.

A friend is a cop for LAPD, officers are heavily discouraged from wearing their uniforms off duty (including to and from work) or having any markings on their personal vehicles identifying them as police officers. That some "community leaders" in the area make their living off encouraging such behavior doesn't help matters.
