And it's so especially poignant for Clark in this series because just like the elves have the pull of the sea, Clark has the pull of the music of the spheres. I love the line-
"I think it would depend on if he had good enough reasons to stay,"
- because for Clark then that's genuinely, like, the case.
Or am I babbling, i'm very, very tired, i'm not altogether sure if what i'm typing makes sense.
Now I have to admit, i've never read lord of the rings, but i loved this story, as I always love your stuff, so i hope that'll be enough for you to forgive my lack of knowledge on the topic :D

*grin* I figured there's be people out there who hadn't read it, so I had a really difficult balance to make sure I explained the plot point without being too didactic! Luckily, Clark was ready to lecture Bruce on the subtleties of Tolkien. :)

Oh, very much so, yes. Bruce is a good reason to stay anywhere! :)
And ooooh, thanks so much for the birthday present, you sweetie! You made my day. :)

*flails* *glomps you* Thank you so much Jen! :D
"I know that perfectly well," Bruce said grumpily. "There's no reason to be so unromantic."
*giggles* *pets Bruce* He's so cute. :p
"I remember when I was seven years old, and someone brought a conch shell in to class for show and tell. We talked about how you could hear the sea in it, and I put my ear to it and heard the sea." He paused, looking off into nowhere, remembering. "Except I realized when I took the shell away that I was hearing the actual sea, not the shell." He smiled slightly. "That was an interesting moment."
*pets Clark* He's so cute too! ;)
"It is blasphemous of you to imply I might not have, sir," said Clark haughtily.
*giggles*
"Never underestimate my geekitude," Clark said blithely, waving his spoon. Some sauce fell on the counter and he hastily wiped it up. "I can also recount Earendil's geneology for you, or recite some of the Lay of Luthien."

He was feeling contrary, lol. If he's in a romantic mood, everyone should be! :)
I was so struck by your image of Legolas being shown around the grounds of Wayne Manor carefully, so as not to see the sea...so I definitely owe you for the concept for this one!
It was a great birthday, wasn't it? *hugs* I'm looking forward to next year's with you! :)

He turned it over in his hands, admiring its natural asymmetry, the spiked roughness of the outside that gave way to creamy, satin-like pinkness inside.
Beautiful description of the shell. :)
And Bruce calling *Clark* unromantic? LOL! Pots and kettles indeed. ;P
I ADORED Clark's anecdote about realizing he could really hear the sea when he was 7, and that he wasn't just hearing stuff inside the shell. I think that's the most gorgeous, poetic way for super-hearing to kick in that I've ever heard. :D
And Clark's geekitude pwns all! I'm sure the eidetic memory helps with knowing obscure details that significantly up one's geekiness. *grin*
"I can also recount Earendil's geneology for you, or recite some of the Lay of Luthien."
"And they say you're no fun at parties," Bruce jibed.
LOL. Bruce, you're just taking him to the wrong parties. =P

Oh, I know! I just gaped at Bruce-muse when he came up with that one. :)

Movieverse Clark is really fun for having powers so early, in some ways. I always prefer versions where they don't manifest truly until he's older, but having them be there early adds an extra bit of eeriness to his life.
Edit: I was just answering someone else's comment when I finally fully realized that the anecdote owes a lot to your wonderful "Predator"! I still consider that like my ur-Clark story...
And the image of them standing cheek to cheek to listen to the shell just melted me.
*purrs* That made it in very late, somehow! But I loved it too once it finally insisted on being there. :)
Thanks for the birthday wishes! I'm still in awe over the art! *beams*

It really does--so much so that I kind of boggled when it finally dawned on me and I began to feel like I'd unconsciously plagiarized Tolkien, lol. Well...steal from the best, I suppose! :)
Thanks so much for the comment!
