Chapter 6

“Hey.” Cassie whispered as Mike reached the bed, holding the baby in his arms.

“She’s beautiful.” Mike smiled, then blinked several times, fighting back tears.

“Let me see her.” Cassie gestured him to get closer and Mike sat down next to her. The baby kept her eyes closed as Mike slowly passed her to Cassie.

“The nurse said she barely cried when they washed her.” Mike informed in a soft voice. “She definitely took after you, a brave little fighter.”

Cassie looked up at him and smiled, while the boy circled her shoulders with an arm. “Are you sure about the name?”

Mike placed a kiss on her temple. “I am. Are you?”

“Yeah.” Cassie leaned in the touch, closing her eyes.

“You should let the doctors give you more of those drugs.” Mike took Cassie’s hand in his own, careful with the IV.

“I’m fine, I can deal with a little pain.” Cassie rolled her eyes, lacing their fingers together, while her left arm held the baby safely. “I want to remember all this.”

“If she’s half as stubborn as you are, I’ll go crazy before she even turns ten.” Mike chuckled, shaking his head.

“Don’t be such an optimist. Five at best.” Cassie turned and addressed him a smirk, then tilted her head and kissed him on the cheek. “I love you.”

Mike smiled warmly, but before he could say anything the door opened and he looked up. Helena, the nurse, was smiling at them kindly, and they both mirrored the gesture.

“Your friends are here.” Helena announced with a little amused frown.

Cassie’s smile widened and she squeezed Mike’s hand. “Can they come in?”

“All of them?” Helena arched an eyebrow, perplexed. “You should rest.”

“They’re our family.” Cassie rested her head against Mike’s shoulder, her eyes never leaving the nurse. “If you let them in, I might consider letting you give me more of those drugs.” She added, and she didn’t need to look at Mike to know he was smirking.

Helena hesitated for a second, then gave in and nodded. “I’ll ask doctor Singer.”

“Thanks.” Mike addressed the woman a smile; when she walked out, the hunter turned to look at Cassie and brought her hand to his mouth. “I love you too.” He whispered against her skin, then placed a soft kiss on the knuckles.

Helena came back a few minutes later and her eyes immediately found the baby. “Doctor Singer said it’s okay as long as you let me put the baby back in the nursery while they’re here.” She pointed at the room next to Cassie’s: there was a glass separating the rooms and the cradle was positioned right in front of Cassie’s bed, on the other side of the transparent wall. “It’s still too early for her to receive all those visits.”

Cassie looked down at the baby sleeping in her arms and bit on her lip, conflicted. “Okay.” She whispered after several seconds. “At least she can sleep without a bunch of people doing ridiculous voices to tell her how beautiful she is.”

Both Helena and Mike laughed softly at that, and the nurse took the baby from Cassie’s arms. “I’ll let your friends in.”

~

“Cassie!” Haley almost jumped on her friend, smiling widely. Keltie reached them and they shared a three way hug. “How are you doing?”

“I’m okay. Kinda.” Cassie smiled back, then looked as the others walked in and Alex closed the door. “Wow, is everyone here?” She asked with an edge of worry in her voice.

“Dirnt, Bob and the new guy are home.” Pete informed with a nod. “They’re sending their congratulations.”

“Thank them when you go home.” Mike replied, standing from Cassie’s bed. He reached the glass and gestured them towards the cradle. “That’s her.”

“A little girl?” Pete beamed, looking at her little face. “She’s so damn beautiful, seriously.”

“You already decided the name?” Gabe asked with a wide smile, moving his eyes from the baby to Mike and Cassie.

“Well, we thought about Gabrielle.” Mike nodded, but everyone caught the teasing tone.

“Funny.” Gabe stuck his tongue out at them and the group laughed. “Gabrielle is a nice name.”

“I think Patricia is better.” Mike replied, and this time his smile and his words didn’t show any trace of mocking. “What d’you think?” He turned to look at Patrick.

“Are you serious?” Patrick blinked several times, shocked. “I mean, I-- you--”

“My grandmother’s name was Patricia.” Cassie offered with a smile.

“And also my uh, step dad?” Mike added, seeing the wide smirk on Pete’s face. He had been worried about Pete’s reaction and he was glad the vampire was taking it well. “’Cause I can call you step mom, but you’d kick my ass.”

“I don’t know what to say.” Patrick whispered, still shocked.

“Then go hug them.” William suggested with a grin, gently shoving Patrick forward.

Patrick took a couple of steps and wrapped Mike in a tight hug, closing his eyes. “Mike, I-- Thank you.”

“No, ‘Trick, thank you. I wouldn’t be here without you.” Mike whispered back, closing his eyes. When he pulled back, the werewolf went to hug Cassie as well.

As Patrick walked back towards Pete, the vampire was surprised to see a couple of tears escape Patrick’s eyes and he immediately pulled his mate in a hug, he knew how much Patrick hated to let people see when he cried. Everyone noticed but no one said anything, they just focused on the baby while Patrick buried his face in Pete’s neck.

One day later

“Ryan.” Tom stood on the library doorstep, a few feet away from where Ryan was sitting on the couch and writing on a notebook.

“Tom.” Ryan looked up and nodded, curious.

“I need to talk to you.” Tom bit on his lower lip as he reached the couch, and he hesitated just a second before sitting down next to Ryan. “I never really apologized for what Brent did.”

“You don’t have to.” Ryan smiled softly, closing the notebook. “It wasn’t you.”

“I was there, I should have stopped him.” Tom shook his head, looking at the boy in front of him. “I should have helped you.”

“If all those vampires were really following him, you would have just gotten yourself killed.” Ryan turned in his seat to face Tom. “And you’re the one who guided Pete to the nest.”

“I admit that being out there where Pete could find me was more than half-intentional.” Tom showed a little smile, but it didn’t reach the eyes. “Even if Pete scared the shit out of me.”

“I don’t blame you for what happened.” Ryan’s hand reached out to touch Tom’s. “Things with Brent never went well, and after Brendon joined us… well, you know. Brent is the one to blame for this.”

“He was in love with you. I mean, in his sick, creepy way, but he was.” Tom watched their hands as Ryan idly played with his fingers. “Since he arrived here.”

“I know.” Ryan whispered, looking down as well. “And I know I’ve been a dick to him on more than one occasion.”

“Which isn’t a good reason for kidnapping.” Tom added, his gaze moving to Ryan’s face.

“No, it isn’t.” Ryan looked up, a sad smile on his lips. “Thanks, Tom.”

“For what?” Tom frowned, visibly confused.

“For coming back.” Ryan brought one of his hands to the back of Tom’s neck, pulling him in a hug. Tom closed his eyes and hugged him back, letting out a silent sigh of relief.

When Ryan pulled back, Tom let himself smile widely at his friend. Before he could add anything, Gabe walked in, smirking when he saw them.

“You.” Gabe pointed at Tom, and the vampire immediately tensed again. When Gabe just kept grinning and sat down in front of them, Ryan frowned. “Bill told me you lectured him when you found out about Bryce.”

“I did.” Tom admitted with a wary glance at the older vampire.

“Thanks for watching out for him.” Gabe addressed him a sincere smile this time, surprising both Ryan and Tom. “At least I know you won’t try to get back in his pants.”

“I’m done being that kind of friend.” Tom confirmed, and he finally relaxed.

“Good.” Gabe nodded and looked at them, his eyes moving from Tom to Ryan and back. “Did I interrupt something?”

“Don’t worry, I was just telling Tom he’s a loyal friend and not a random jerk who wouldn’t have warned us about Butcher.” Ryan circled Tom’s neck with an arm and pulled the boy closer.

“Get off me.” Tom laughed when Ryan ruffled his hair with the other hand.

“Kids.” Gabe shook his head, chuckling. “You know where I can find Pierre?” He asked when Tom finally got free from Ryan’s grip.

“Pete gave him and David a room, since they’re kind of corporeal now.” Ryan informed with a nod, but Gabe could see the worry in his gaze. “You want to talk to him?”

“I haven’t seen him since I came home after the attack.” Gabe sighed and slowly stood from the couch. “I think I owe him an apology.”

“You think?” Ryan cocked an eyebrow, half-glaring.

“Yeah, well, I’m on my way, okay?” Gabe raised his hands and headed for the door.

“Where’s Bill?” Tom asked him before he stepped out.

“Talking to Bryce.” Gabe replied, then walked upstairs.

~~

The knock on the door made Bryce look up from his book and he replied to come in. When he saw it was William, his frown turned into a little smile.

“Hey.” Bryce closed the book and put it down on the bed.

“Hi.” William smiled back and slowly closed the door. “How are you doing?”

“I should be asking that question.” Bryce bit on his lower lip, watching as William reached the bed.

“Don’t worry about me.” William sat down in front of him, his smile firm in place. “My other half his back, I’m okay now.”

“I’m glad he’s alright.” Bryce nodded, smirking at the surprised gaze in William’s eyes. “Really. He might be better than I thought.”

“He told me you two had a little chat.” William crawled closer and rested his back against the headboard, not looking away from Bryce.

“Yeah.” The werewolf looked down briefly, chuckling. “He told me you two are supposed to become mates soon.”

“We are.” William admitted, his smile fading a little. “I should have told you.”

“Now I can see why Tom was ready to chew my head off.” Bryce looked up again, but his tone wasn’t bitter or angry, just understanding. “Let’s just forget about last week.”

“No.” William shook his head, determined. “Well, maybe the kiss, but not everything.” He locked his eyes with Bryce’s surprised ones. “You never left my side, you helped me through that hell when I was supposed to help you.”

“Let’s just forget about the kiss, then.” Bryce nodded, and the relieved look in his eyes made William smile. “But just so you know, you helped me more than you think.”

“I’m glad to hear that.” William admitted, resting his head on Bryce’s shoulder. He looked down at the book and his smile widened. “Dorian Gray?” Gabe’s favorite, William added in his head.

“Yeah, but to be honest, I’ve read much better books.” Bryce frowned a bit, eyeing the book. “I mean, Dorian loves himself so much that he doesn’t even care that he’s destroying the ones who love him with his behavior.”

“I don’t really wanna spoil you the end of the book, but he doesn’t exactly get away with it.” William showed a little smile, tilting his head to the side.

“His redemption can’t bring Sybil and Basil back, though.” Bryce objected, shaking his head slowly.

“I never talked about redemption.” William took the book in his hands, but didn’t look away from Bryce. “Remorse, maybe, but I’m not even sure about that.”

“I don’t understand how someone could give up their soul just to live forever.” Bryce watched as William put the book down.

“Sometimes it’s not that easy.” William whispered, and Bryce saw something in his eyes change. Realization hit him hard a second later.

“I’m sorry, I didn’t--” Bryce muttered, feeling his heart drop low in his chest. “I wasn’t referring to you.”

“I know.” William nodded, eyeing the book one last time. “Being a vampire isn’t as easy as it seemed.”

“Do you regret it?” Bryce’s tone was cautious, but William could feel he was curious.

“Honestly?” William addressed him a little smile. “No.” He chuckled softly and looked at Bryce in the eye. “I mean, according to the legends, when I was turned I lost my soul, which means that there’s no afterlife waiting for me, after.” He explained as his fingers played with the cover of the book. “But you know, no one can be sure. If it’s possible to turn a vampire back to human, then our souls aren’t really lost.”

“Is there something you miss?” Bryce brought his hand to William, lacing their fingers together. “Like, the sun, or not needing blood.”

“Not really, I just… I miss Mikey.” William admitted with a whisper, looking at their joined hands. “He died to save Patrick.”

“He was one of you?” Bryce sounded surprised, and William let a sad smile curve his lips.

“Not exactly. He was--” William hesitated, trying to find the right words. “He was a close friend.”

“Boyfriend?” Bryce tried, his voice showing a clear edge of caution.

“I wouldn’t exactly use that word.” William smiled, looking up at the werewolf.

“You were in love with him?” Bryce saw hurt and regret fill William’s eyes.

“Not in the way I am with Gabe, but yeah.” William realized it was the first time he’d admitted it out loud.

“This is what you meant the other day in the basement? When you said that every time someone has to get hurt or killed?”

William didn’t reply, he just looked down again and played with Bryce’s fingers. “Can we not talk about Mikey?”

“Sorry.” Bryce nodded, feeling suddenly guilty for asking so many questions despite William’s discomfort.

“Tell me something more about you.” William took a deep breath and looked up again, a little smile curving the corners of his mouth.

“I’m turning twenty-five in December.” Bryce shrugged, then frowned when William let out a soft laughter. “What?”

“You’re older than me.” William informed with a smirk.

“What are you, eighteen?” Bryce was relieved to feel the tension between them disappear.

“Hey!” William slapped him on the arm, offended. “I turned twenty-three in February.”

“No shit.” Bryce faked a shocked face. “So you’re actually legal?” William flipped him off and Bryce laughed.

~~

Gabe knocked on the door and waited for a reply, then opened it.

“Oh, hi Gabe.” David waved from the bed, smiling. Pierre was sitting on the other side of the bed and simply acknowledged his presence with a nod.

“David, can you leave us alone for a few minutes?” Gabe asked, his eyes moving from Pierre back to the other spirit.

“Sure.” David stood from the bed in a second. “I’ll be in the kitchen if you need me.”

“Tom and Ryan are in the library if you want.” Gabe informed with a little smirk and watched as the spirit walked out of the room whistling.

“I have nothing to tell you.” Pierre didn’t raise his gaze from the old book he was reading. “And you can save your breath.”

“I know I have no right to ask you, but please, just listen to me.” Gabe took a deep breath, trying to sound as reasonable as possible.

“I know you changed, I saw it.” Pierre finally looked up, his eyebrow raised. “You’re a different vampire, you’re one of the good guys, wow, let’s go celebrate.” He added with fake enthusiasm. “You’re not the reason I’m still here.”

“I thought you wanted revenge.” Gabe frowned, visibly confused.

“Listen.” Pierre sighed, exasperated. “I’ve been here for two centuries, doing nothing but thinking about the fact that you killed me, so yeah, if you’re alive it means I got over it.” Pierre looked more than annoyed to be having that conversation. “Don’t get me wrong, I still hate you, but you’re not the only one who’s not a bad guy anymore.”

“Then why are you still here?” Gabe took a step towards the bed, surprised.

“You mean why I’m not telling you and your friends where you can find my body?” Pierre cocked an eyebrow, the look in his eyes turning darker. “Trust me, whatever is waiting for me after, this isn’t the right moment to get there.”

“What d’you mean?” Gabe frowned, a bad feeling settling in his chest.

“Things are happening.” Pierre shook his head, and for a moment he looked only worried, all traces of hatred gone. “The demons that attacked you, the stuff Spencer found out… someone is messing with stuff bigger than them.”

“You’re helping us.” Gabe whispered, stunned by that realization.

Pierre looked at him, unbelieving. “Seriously, you’re just as clever as a dead slug.” Gabe looked offended by that, but Pierre cut him off. “Yes, I’m working with Spencer and the others.” He admitted with a sigh, then looked down back at the book. “And now leave me the fuck alone.”

“Pierre.” Gabe waited for the spirit to look up again and locked their gazes together. “Thanks for helping us.”

A flash of surprise appeared in Pierre’s eyes, then he looked down and hid it from Gabe. “Yeah, whatever, fuck off.”

Gabe smiled to himself, opening the door. With a last glance at the spirit he walked out, but the bad feeling came back as he thought about Pierre’s words. Something was really going on, then.

Later that evening

“The pizza delivery called back.” Tom informed as he gestured towards the phone while Ryan walked downstairs. “They said their car broke down and they can’t deliver.”

“Great.” Ryan sighed, going for the car keys. “I’ll go.”

“You’re the best friend in the world.” Tom grinned and placed a kiss on Ryan’s temple. “Without you half the people in this house would starve to death.”

“Yeah, well, I’m that awesome.” Ryan replied distractedly as he checked he had enough cash. “Dork.”

Ryan smiled as he walked out, the sound of Tom’s laughter muffled by the main door. Ten minutes later he was getting out of the car in front of the pizzeria. The delivery car was parked nearby with the hood opened and two guys were arguing while looking at the engine. As soon as he walked in, he was welcomed with a warm smile from Jamia, the girl who usually answered the phone.

“Hey, Ryan.” Jamia waved at him, cheerful.

“Hey.” Ryan smiled back, sincerely glad to see the girl. She had been one of Mike’s classmates in high school, and back then she used to come up at the manor and hang out with them.

“I’m sorry about the delivery thing, the car just… died.” Jamia took the money Ryan handed her. “But since you’re a regular, I’ll give you a discount.” She added with a smirk.

“It’s no big deal, really.” Ryan looked around as she counted his change. “It’s nice to take a trip downtown from time to time.”

“I still don’t get how you can live in that huge house, I bet it gets creepy at night.” Jamia laughed, shaking her head.

“Oh, c’mon, you survived every time you slept there, didn’t you?” Ryan laughed as well, putting his wallet away.

“I did.” Jamia admitted, taking a look in the kitchen. “Just a couple of minutes and they’ll be ready.” Ryan nodded at that and sat at one of the chairs. “So, how are things? Last time I saw Mike, he cheerfully announced me he was becoming dad.”

“Oh, and he did.” Ryan assured, smirking. “Cassie had the baby yesterday. Patricia.”

“Aww, cute name. I’ll give them a call in a couple of days, when she comes home from the hospital.” Jamia nodded, enthusiastic. “I still can’t believe Mike has a daughter.”

“You’re telling me!” Ryan laughed, shaking his head. “But he’s doing great so far, I’m sure they’ll be happy to hear from you.”

“Good.” Jamia smiled, then turned when someone called from the kitchen. She took the boxes and piled them on the counter. “Here’s your order.”

“Thanks.” Ryan took the pizzas and addressed her a last smile. “See you, Jamia.”

“Bye.” Jamia waved at him, and sat back at her place. “Say hi to the others!”

“I will.” Ryan replied, then stepped out of the shop and noticed the guys were gone.

With a shrug Ryan reached his car and put the boxes on the roof long enough to open the passenger door, then put them on the seat quickly. He straightened and walked around the back of the car, but stopped dead in his tracks when he sensed someone standing a few feet away, hidden in the shadow.

“Who’s there?” Ryan’s hand went immediately for his knife and the memories of the day Brent kidnapped him came back stronger than ever.

When the figure took a step towards him and revealed his features, Ryan dropped the keys, shocked. “Dad?”

“Hi, Ryan.” George smirked, but didn’t move closer.
