Chapter 3

“Hey, you okay?” Maja closed the door right after walking in William’s room.

“No.” William sat up on the bed. “I’m a fucking pussy.”

Maja let a little sad smile stretch her lips at those words. “You two had a fight?”

“Is it so obvious?” William wiped the red tears from his cheeks, trying to regain composure.

“Well, Gabe slammed the front door so hard the glass broke, and yeah, you’re not just practicing for drama class.” Maja sat down next to him, bringing her hand to William’s cheek.

“Sorry about the glass.” William looked at the girl, trying to stop more tears. “He went out?”

“He needs to calm the hell down.” Maja did a little shrug. “You fought about Pierre?”

“You know how Gabe killed him?” William asked, not sure what he wanted to hear in reply.

“Let’s just say Pierre didn’t spare me any detail.” Maja shook her head briefly, getting the image out of her mind. “But David’s right, he’s pretty zen, he had two centuries to deal with it.”

“It doesn’t change what Gabe did.” William whispers, his hand moving Maja’s away from his face.

“If Pierre kind of forgave him, then I guess it means Gabe deserves it.” Maja laced their fingers together, trying not to sound too insistent.

“I just hope I can deal with all this.” William closed his eyes, feeling them water again. “It’s so much worse than I thought. I wish--” He stopped mid-sentence and looked down at his free hand, where he was wearing Mikey’s necklace.

“You wish what?”

“I wish I could take my mind off it for a while, let everything go and just have…” William felt guilt making his chest hurt as he realized what he was about to say. “Just have Mikey here.”

“So that’s it? You’re telling me your epic love story ends here ‘cause Gabe killed that guy?” Maja sounded more angry than shocked. “Don’t get me wrong, but you knew who he was. You knew it all along.”

“I’m not leaving him.” William sounded determined, and this time he really believed his words. “I just need time to accept all this.”

“I’m sure Gabe will understand.” Maja pulled William closer and hugged him, closing her eyes. “You two went through so much, this is just another little step you have to take.”

“You think it’s safe to have those spirits around?” William changed the subject and saw Maja frown a little.

“I’m pretty sure David isn’t dangerous.” Maja admitted, shrugging a little. “And Pierre seems to be okay.”

“Okay.” William accepted her words, knowing that if there had been the slightest chance someone could get hurt, she would have already set the salt in the whole house.

“There’s Bryce out here, should I tell him to come back later?” Maja asked as she stood, her eyes not leaving William’s face.

“No.” William wiped his eyes and took a deep breath. “Let him in on your way out.”

Maja leaned down and placed a kiss on William’s forehead. “It’s gonna be okay.”

The vampire just nodded and watched as she walked to the door and stepped out of the room, letting Bryce enter first. The wolf waited for the door to close, then got on the bed with an effortless hop.

“I’ve got good news for you.” William addressed him a little smile. “Brendon called our friend at the police department.” Bryce tilted his head to the side, listening. “No aggressions or corpses in the park the night we found you. I guess it was an hallucination.”

Bryce nudged softly at William’s leg, his gaze thankful and worried at the same time. William smiled and scratched the top of Bryce’s head, then slowly lied down on his side. The wolf watched him for a few minutes, then lied down too. He raised a paw and rested it on William hand, surprising the boy.

“Thanks.” William whispered to the wolf, smiling. They just lied there in silence, their gazes locked as sleep slowly sneaked up on William. They both fell asleep a few minutes later.

One week later

“I’m telling you, I’m sure they’re perfectly fine.” Pete whined as they walked towards the door.

“I have a bad feeling.” Patrick looked around, his eyes clouded with worry. “And besides, Cassie could go into labor any minute now.”

“Just like a week ago.” Pete sighed, visibly perplexed. “What changed?”

“There’s an angry spirit, Cassie’s about to have the baby, and we have to help organize Gabe and William’s mating ritual and Travis and Vicky’s marriage.” Patrick listed, counting on his fingers. “We should have waited.”

“We’ve been waiting until now, ‘Trick.” Pete stopped, refusing to follow Patrick.

“I have a bad feeling.” Patrick repeated, and took the keys from his pocket. “Uh.” He stopped and looked at the glass of the front door while Pete gave in and reached him. “It looks different.”

Pete watched it too, then shrugged and gestured Patrick to walk inside. As soon as they stepped in the hall, Pete put their suitcases on the floor and looked around at the empty room.

“Anybody home?” Pete yelled, regretting for a minute they had disabled the alarms when they had entered the gate.

“Library.” A voice replied, and they both walked towards the corridor at their right, heading for the library.

When they walked inside the room, they saw William sitting on the couch, a blond wolf sleeping next to him with his head on William’s leg. As soon as the wolf heard them, he looked up and growled, baring his teeth and bending his ears back against his skull.

“It’s okay, Bryce, they’re friends.” William immediately brought his hand to Bryce’s back, caressing him slowly with a now familiar movement.

“Who the hell is he?” Pete frowned, nodding in Bryce’s direction.

“He got bitten three weeks ago, we found him the night after you left.” William explained, putting his book on the coffee table. “His name is Bryce.”

“Nice to meet you.” Patrick smiled softly at the wolf, who barked in response.

“What are you doing here?” William frowned, his hand never leaving Bryce’s back. “I thought you were supposed to stay away for another week.”

“We missed home.” Pete grinned before Patrick could say anything. “How are things?”

“Uh.” William bit on his lower lip at that, his gaze moving to Bryce’s blond fur. “Complicated.”

“Pete!” David yelled as he entered the library. “Patrick!” He added, walking past them. “It’s good to see you, guys! How was your vacation?”

“Who the hell?” Pete’s frown deepened as David sat down on the table, resting a foot on the chair.

“David Desrosiers, I owned this house a couple of centuries ago.” David smirked widely. “Well, until someone accidentally killed me in my sleep. Old story.” He shrugged and addressed them a dismissive wave.

“Are you kidding? You are the angry ghost?” Pete raised both his eyebrows, skeptical.

“Nope, that’s not me.” David shook his head and put his other foot on the chair too. “That’s Pierre, he’s quite pissed ‘cause Gabe killed him. But as I said to Bill and Maja and pretty much everyone else, he’s emo-ed for decades but now he’s very zen about it, won’t kill anyone.” David explained, talking too quickly and ignoring the surprised looks on Pete and Patrick’s faces. “Oh, and don’t use the word ghost. Please and thank you.”

“Do I need to say David and Brendon get along horribly well?” William sighed, hoping to avoid the Gabe conversation. The vampire hadn’t come back since their fight, and William had been tempted to call him, but never did, knowing they both needed time.

“Where’s Gabe?” Patrick obviously wasn’t buying it, and William bit on his lower lip.

“I don’t know.” William eventually admitted, seeing Bryce turn to look at him, nudging at his leg with his nose.

“They fought and Gabe took off a week ago.” David explained, his smile gone but his tone still light. “Very angry Gabe. Front door. New glass. Grouchy Bill.”

“Can we not talk about this right now?” William asked, addressing a very eloquent look at both Patrick and Pete.

“Of course we’re gonna talk about this right now.” Pete raised his eyebrow, visibly worried. “What the hell did he tell you?” William knew Pete was referring to Gabe.

“Pete, please.” William stood from the couch abruptly and headed for the door. “Not here and not now”

Pete faced him and didn’t let him reach the door, his jaw tightening. “Why the hell did he leave?”

“We said stupid things, okay?” William felt Pete’s hand on his arm and got immediately free. “We had a fight and we said stupid things, and now he’s the fucking devil knows where. Just leave me alone.”

Pete was quite surprised by the outburst, but when William tried to walk past him, he didn’t try to stop the boy.

“Don’t worry, he’ll deal.” David shrugged and watched as Bryce quickly followed William out of the room. “I’m pretty sure he doesn’t want to have this conversation in front of Bryce and uh, me. Also, he probably needs time to figure out what to tell you, since he didn’t expect you to be home and he’s probably not ready for that conversation.” David explained with a little eloquent stare. “And gosh, people in this house need to understand the notion of personal space.”

“Says who’s been spying on us for years.” Pete arched an eyebrow in the spirit’s direction.

“D’you mind?” Patrick pointed towards the chair where David was resting his feet.

“Relax Pattycake, I’m a spirit, I can’t ruin your furniture.” David grinned and saw Pete’s eyes widen at the nickname.

“Call me that again and I swear I’ll rock salt your sorry ass.” Patrick growled, his cheeks getting slightly pinker.

“That doesn’t apply to me, right?” Pete asked with a little worried frown, and David fell back on the table, laughing hysterically.

“Let’s go.” Patrick glared at David first, then at Pete. “Let’s bring the suitcases upstairs, then we can try and talk to Bill.”

Pete watched him turn and exit the room and turned to address David a little smirk, before following his mate.

“Personal space!” David yelled after them, then laughed again.

~

“One week.” Pete let himself fall back on the bed, his hands covering his face. “One fucking week.”

“Pete.” Patrick didn’t say anything else, and the vampire looked up at him.

“You were right, we shouldn’t have left.” Pete admitted, a trace of guilt clear in his gaze.

“You really think the situation would have been different if we’d been here?” Patrick asked, frowning deeply. “Gabe killed that man, well, many people, and William is struggling with that.”

“We could have stopped Gabe.” Pete offered, admitting that yeah, the fight had been probably inevitable.

“Really?” Patrick cocked an eyebrow at Pete, skeptical. “Stop Gabe?”

“Okay, fine. We could have been here helping William through this.” Pete sat up and looked at his mate, not sure of his own words.

“I’m pretty sure everyone in the house tried.” Patrick reached him and put a hand on the back of Pete’s neck. “It’s something he has to deal with on his own, I guess. We can’t make him accept Gabe’s past.”

“I liked it better when we were all happy.” Pete circled Patrick’s waist with his arms and pulled him closer, parting his legs to make room for him.

“Don’t worry, things are gonna be okay.” Patrick trailed his hand in Pete’s hair and looked down at him. “Gabe is William’s Sire, and they love each other. They’ll make it.”

“How did you do it?” Pete rested his cheek against Patrick’s stomach and closed his eyes. “How did you accept me when you found out about my past?”

Patrick didn’t reply for a few seconds, just idly played with Pete’s hair, his other hand caressing the vampire’s neck. “I looked at you and saw the only way I could ever be happy.”

Pete looked up at those words and a little smile tugged at his lips. “Was it true?” He asked, an edge of worry in his voice. “Are you happy here, with me, with us?”

“Pete.” Patrick locked his gaze with his mate’s, smiling. “I’m the happiest person you could ever meet on this planet.”

Pete slowly stood up at that, and Patrick took a step back. “I still don’t know how I got so lucky.”

Patrick leaned forward and kissed the vampire, still smiling in the kiss. “We’re an old sappy couple.”

“Can I still call you Pattycake, then?” Pete whispered on his lips, grinning.

“Not right now.” Patrick narrowed his eyes and bit gently on Pete’s lower lip, then withdrew slowly. “What about the new guy?”

“What about him?” Pete asked as he sat back on the bed, eyeing the suitcase.

“He and Bill looked pretty…cozy.” Patrick arched an eyebrow, perplexed.

“Well, there’s always a closer bond with the first ones you bring home.” Pete shrugged a little, looking back at Patrick. “Look at us and Bill, or Ryan.”

Patrick smiled at that and nodded slowly. “I guess our family is getting bigger and bigger, then.”

~~

“Bill.” Ryan opened the door slowly, making sure it was safe to enter. William was sitting on his bed, book in hand and Bryce next to him. “Can I talk to you?”

“Sure.” William looked up and addressed Ryan a smile, while Bryce slowly stood. When the wolf reached the door, he turned to look at William and the vampire addressed him a curious glance. “You okay?” Bryce barked once then walked out, and Ryan closed the door.

“He’s adapting well.” Ryan reached the bed and sat down, watching as William closed his book and put it on the nightstand.

“It’s nice to have him around.” William admitted, shrugging a bit. “He’s…he tries to be comforting in his own way, even if I’ve known him for a week.”

“You probably saved his life and you gave him a shelter and a family.” Ryan crawled until he was sitting in front of William, their legs touching. “You’re the Pete to his William, and I’m quite positive he adores you.”

“The thing is totally mutual.” William admitted with a smile. “Bryce is a good guy, he’s even nicer in his human form.”

“I bet he is.” Ryan laughed, shaking his head. “At least he can talk normally.”

“He’s from Dallas, you know? Ran all the way up here after the first night of full moon.” William rested his elbows on his knees, leaning forward. “I can only imagine how horrible that was.”

“That’s quite a brave run.” Ryan admitted, surprised. “Good thing he ended up in Chicago.”

“Yeah.” William looked down at the point where their knees touched.

“Bill.” Ryan gently bumped his leg against William’s. “Talk to me.”

“I am talking to you.” William didn’t look up, knowing well what Ryan meant.

“Did you call him?” Ryan kept looking at William’s face, trying to lock their gazes together.

“No.” William admitted, still not raising his eyes.

“You can’t go on like this.” Ryan finally brought his hand to William’s chin, forcing him to look up. “He’s the one who turned you even if there was a very high chance it would have killed him as well. He loves you.”

“I know.” William took a deep breath, trying to stay in control of his emotions. “I just need time to accept this.”

“I’m pretty sure Gabe will give you all the time you need, but you have to show him you want to try.” Ryan leaned forward, resting his forehead against William’s. “You have to show him you love him and you want to accept this.” When William didn’t reply, he sighed. “Everyone has a past, Bill.” Ryan showed a little sad smile. “Look at me, at Spencer, at Pete.”

“I’ll call him.” William whispered, feeling his eyes water. “I just…tomorrow.”

“Okay.” Ryan slowly nodded, smiling. “It’s a start.” He placed a soft, innocent kiss on William’s lips, an affectionate move they weren’t new to. “Get some rest.”

William smiled and Ryan slowly stood, going for the door. When he opened it, he saw a blond guy standing on the other side of the corridor. “Uh, you are?”

“Bryce.” Bryce scratched the back of his neck and addressed Ryan a smile. “The human version.”

“Oh.” Ryan looked at him from head to toe, recognizing his scent. “Oh.”

“Yeah.” Bryce looked quite uncomfortable under the stare and Ryan nodded slowly.

“Sorry, I just… I imagined you a bit different.” Ryan admitted with a smirk. “Go ahead, I should get dinner ready anyway.”

Bryce looked as Ryan walked towards the stairs, then the werewolf turned and entered William’s room. “Hey.”

“Hey.” William looked up, surprised, and blinked away the tears. “You know, I’m not always like this.” William let out a soft, nervous laughter as Bryce closed the door. “Usually I’m a cheerful person, bordering on dorky.”

“I like you both ways.” Bryce smiled at him, then sat down on the bed. “Well, I obviously like you more when you smile, but still.”

“Thanks for… well, for being so sweet, I guess.” William laughed a little, feeling a little better. “You don’t even know me.”

“I’m starting to. Kinda.” Bryce nodded slowly, laughing as well. “I just wished I could do something to help.” He added as he sat down next to William, his back against the headboard. “I mean, I’m not Gabe’s best fan, especially right now, but if you want to talk I’m here. Wolf or human.”

“Thanks, Bryce, it means a lot.” William addressed him a little smile and closed his eyes, letting his head rest back against the wall. There were several seconds of comfortable silence, and William started to relax a little.

“Bill.”

William turned his head and opened his eyes, and three seconds later he found Bryce’s lips on his own, slow and tentative. When William didn’t withdrew, Bryce hesitantly licked at his bottom lip, a silent question he knew he shouldn’t have been asking.

William’s wide opened eyes closed slowly, knowing that if he was going to give in, he didn’t want to watch. The kiss started out soft and slow, and Bryce brought his hand to William’s neck, his thumb caressing the vampire’s jaw. William withdrew just a few seconds later, guilt clenching at his chest as his mind filled with images of Gabe.

“I really want to kiss you again.” Bryce whispered on his lips, and William’s eyes opened. “I want to kiss you until you don’t remember anything else.”

“Bryce.” William’s tone was halfway between desperate and warning.

“It was a mistake, I know.” Bryce admitted, not looking away. “I’m sorry.”

“It won’t happen again.” William’s hand reached a strand of Bryce’s hair and put it behind his ear.

“You want me to go?” Bryce kept looking at him in the eye, and William knew he needed to have someone with him. He also knew Bryce wasn’t going to do anything else.

“No.” William lied down on his side. “I mean, if you want to stay.”

“I want to.” Bryce lied down too and their gazes locked again. “I’m sorry.”

“It’s okay.” William whispered, but avoided his eyes as he shifted closer. “I’m sorry too.” Bryce smiled softly as his arm circled William’s waist, and the vampire buried his face in the boy’s neck, breathing slowly. “Just tonight.”

“Sleep.” Bryce muttered against William’s hair, then placed a kiss on the top of his head, closing his eyes as well.

One day later

“So he’s cute, uh?” Sisky asked as he sat on the couch in the library. “Hot?”

“That too.” Ryan admitted, smirking at Brendon’s frown.

“Is it safe to have him around Bill that much?” Tom asked, slightly worried. “He’s vulnerable right now.”

“I’m sure he’ll be okay.” Sisky raised an eyebrow, perplexed. “He has Gabe, and he’s not stupid.”

“I hope you’re right, Sisky.” Tom sighed and stood from his chair, just as David walked in.

“Good evening my dear roommates.” David reached the couch and sat on Sisky’s knees, gaining a glare from Alex. “Maja threatened to do very very awful things if I didn’t let her and Billie Joe have sex, so here I am.”

“I can do very very awful things too, you know?” Alex raised an eyebrow, addressing him an eloquent look.

“Dude, chill, I can’t have sex with your boyfriend, I’m dead.” David laughed, leaning back against Sisky.

“That never stopped you.” Pierre pointed out, slowly walking in the library.

“It’s different with you, you’re a spirit too.” David nodded and winked at Pierre. “About that, want to find an empty room?”

“Spirits have sex?” Brendon asked in utter shock. “Oh gosh, you never had sex while I was in the room, have you?”

“We’re spirits, but we like privacy.” Pierre smirked and shook his head, then his expression turned serious once again. “How’s Bill doing?”

“It’s hard to tell.” Ryan sighed, sitting on the chair next to Brendon. “But he said he’s gonna call Gabe today.”

Pierre nodded at that and started to walk out of the door, but stopped dead on his tracks when the alarms went off.

“Good old times.” David stood quickly and ran out of the room.

They got in position and Pete joined them from upstairs, Patrick following a few seconds later. The vampire went to open the door with his gun ready, but froze on the spot when he saw who it was, then quickly kneeled down.

“Gabe.” Patrick muttered as he reached Pete in front of the door. “Fuck, let’s get him upstairs.”

Pete lifted Gabe’s almost unconscious body, trying not to touch the deep wounds and the bruises he was covered with. It all felt like a déjà vu, and he had to remind himself it wasn’t Mikey this time.

“Fucking demons.” Gabe whispered, almost too weak to be heard.

“We need to get Bill.” Patrick turned to look at Tom, and the boy immediately ran upstairs.

A/N: Well, I know I was supposed to post this one on Sunday, but I thought that I could post twice this week. So yeah, here I am, and expect number 4 on Sunday. Then, I’ll start with the weekly update. *nods*
Also, as you’ll notice, the Gabilliam crisis isn’t the main storyline in this. Like, at all. *grins* That’s just a plot device to…well, just to be evil, actually. So I wanted the real trouble to be introduced quite quickly. And since you’re ready for it, I’m gonna bring it.

And if you think Gabilliam is the only couple Bryce is gonna get involved with, then you might want to think again. *smirks* But I’m not saying more.

Just this: someone’s returning at the house in next chapter. :D
It’s all for now, see you on Sunday.JM <333
