Oh, random/sundry

Anyone watch Castle for this week?  I <3 Adam Baldwin and Nathan Fillion so much.  Oh my god.  Detective Slaughter was HILARIOUS.

I got a bunch of stuff done including returning the broken shade and meeting with people about a quilt for a preschool teacher and scraping the girls' bedroom floor.  Also went to the library and bought milk.  Woot.  ( Read more... )

They didn't shut it down as much as go on ~break~ because they're tired of being ~harassed~. Meanwhile, at least one of those mods is notorious for being rude most of the time and a huge dick, but I'm suppose to care they've never had a day off? It's a LJ community, not a paying job. It is a huge community, I've modded two at the same time, but not all 11,500+ are posting at once and most of what is posted are links to other things like fic or icons. Plus, it's on a queue - what exactly are they stressed about? They're the ones with 90,000 rules and regulations they've put in place to please their personal needs and supposedly that of the community's. I'd get exhausted, too, if I was trying to micromanage everything that comes through the community when it doesn't need to be. I have zero sympathy for them, tbh, especially after things like this: http://stardust-made.livejournal.com/57668.html... )

Thanks for more context! I will add a link to the post.

I think that comms are tricky, especially when they get that big.

I've not had the greatest experiences with merlinxarthur, but I've tried not to take the correcting personally. I did quit posting there for a while, actually, but then gritted my teeth and tried it again. It only took me four times (or maybe it was five) before I finally got all the rules straight in my head and managed to post correctly.

Sounds like it will be a good time for Sherlock fandom to fracture and regroup and rejuvenate.

Were they rude to you, though? It's one thing to not get the header right, but rudeness is just not going to help anyone ( ... )

I can't think of the right word, but that mod is not touchy feely. She's very strict and I feel like she's kind of OCD about the rules, but it's her comm and she can run it the way she likes. If I don't like the rules, I don't have to post there.

I can see that it's a complicated situation and as I wasn't a member of the comm, I can't really say anything else. I am just sad to see that people are having a hard time in fandom, on either side, really.

But yeah, it does seem like the mods have some issues. I have been wary of comms and this doesn't endear me to them more.

Of course I know that cyber bullying exists but that's already the third case I heard about in the last week. It frustrates and scares me at the same time.

Castle was hilarious. I'm a bit disappointed with the series this season and it starts to tire me a little (which is just sad because I love the characters) but this episode was o.k. Way over the top but o.k.

A book? I could recommand sooo many. I don't know if you're into dystopian novels at all but I recently re-read a swedish book called "Kallocain" by Karin Boye which I wanted to pimp in my journal because it's mostly unknown in other countries but really, really good. Most people would compare it with Orwell's 1984 although it was published 9 years earlier. Orwell was strongly influenced by it.
It's a tough theme but the book itself isn't depressing or sad. At least not from my POV.

princealia provided more context. See link in her reply or in the post.

Me too! I've been a bit disappointed with Castle as well, but when I saw that Adam Baldwin was on, I raced to watch. He did not disappoint! I thought it was hilarious.

Sounds like an interesting read. I wonder if I could find it at the library.

I really can't say anything about the whole thing although more context is always good. But no matter whose right or wrong, the fact that you're getting messages at other accounts which have nothing to do with your fandom accounts sucks. I for my part want my private account and my fandom account to stay separate.

I know there's an english version of the book but because it's not that known outside of Sweden I'm not sure if your library will have it.

Another favorite of mine which I can't recommand enough:

Antonio Skármeta: "The Postman/Burning Patience"

That's a nice little novel which will make you feel good and happy:)

I don't have any more to say on the Sherlock thing, but it just made me sad that anyone was having a hard time in fandom.

Il Postino is a gorgeous gorgeous movie.

My library does not have that book, alas.

Yeah. Totally. Sounds like it's a bit complicated, but sad, nonetheless. I was thinking of you when I heard this because fandom should be happy fun sunshine all the time. It's my fantasyland escape, for fuck sake.

Who wrote Swamplandia? Did you read it?

Also, you will want to come back and talk to me about Castle after you watch it.

what kind of books do you normally read?

I would highly recommend "Night Circus" by Erin Morgenstern . It's this gorgeously dreamy story that is wonderfully written, intriguing and very very easy to read. Also, if you like listening to books, it was narrated by the same person who narrated "Pushing Daisies". He has such a wonderful voice *sigh*.

I also just finished reading "The Stolen Child" by Keith Donahue. It's this interesting and fantastical story based on the "changeling" myth. There's a lot of existentialist ideas behind it too, that have been rolling around in my head for days, even after finishing it, so that's fun. It's thinky, but also fun and enjoyable and the fantasy aspects of the story are woven so perfectly with real life stuff that it's kind of amazing and impressive.

YA scifi/fantasy stuff. Some regular fiction. I've heard about "Night Circus". I should read it. If it's narrated well, I could listen. I love audio books.

Oooh, that second rec sounds brilliant. I'll have to see if my library has it.
