May 29, 2009 11:52

As you may know I am avoiding spoilers for DT's final episodes like the plague, aside from knowing that he's leaving (sad) I want to let RTD beat my heart to a bloody pulp and be surprised about it ( Read more... )

Yeah. I think that sexism is such an intrinsic part of his worldview that he really can't say anything that isn't steeped in it.

Yes! And yes and yes. To both of you! It's so sad, yet true. And I'm with you, kind of "Eh" re: S5 AND absolutely staying spoiler-free for DT's final 3. Loved the DT guesting on Sarah Jane news though! ;-)

Hadn't heard that one, another dint in the spoiler cave I guess. But I think I like it (I love the SJA, it's so adorable).

It got to be that, because he might actually be more of an idiot if he knows how he comes off and does it anyway, and it's hard for him to come off as a yet bigger idiot.

Moff is just so sexist and even classiest that it isn't even funny. Who was he speaking about in that quote? The new Companion? I swear if he brings in that damn River Song. . . (who no one actually seems to like. . .)

Moffat's just an ass, with just about every prejudice a middle aged, middle class, British while man can possess.

Yeah, he was talking about the new companion, no indication that it is she who will not be named, but I still would be too surprised if it was.

...I liked River Song.

Mine is the loneliest fandom.

ETA: but I actually really don't want her to be the next Companion, I want them to leave things exactly as they are and never explain it any more than that. But this is Doctor Who that we're talking about so I'm sure they'll bring her back and find some way to make me dislike her right away.

I know you like her, it's unusual as far as I know, but there are some. Different characters for different people.

But leaving things the way they are works for me. That means people like me can ignore the episodes and pretend that season 4 only has 11 episodes (plus various specials), and people like you can speculate and come up with all kinds of probably good story possibilities that...well you may or may not have fewer issues with Moffat, but let's say that I'm on the side of fandom that really hopes Moffat never gets his grubby sexist paws of my favorite characters.

Because little boys can't possibly identify with a female character.

AAARGGHHHH WHAT THE HELLLL

I want to like...make this man read a few choice books. You know, ones where the MFC is AWESOME and KICKASS and doesn't need to let her femaleness define her, but her AWESOMENESS instead; who doesn't need to be de-sexed, but...

I'm ranting now. alsjdlaj MOFF

Little boys couldn't possibly love a female character without wanting all girls to be her either it appears. As far as I knew a lot of young boys loved Rose, doesn't mean they thought all girls should grow up to be like her.

The man is just...an asshat. Even if he doesn't want to read books about awesome female character, he could you know, watch the show he's taking over, because it's full of wonderful female characters that people of all ages, genders, classes, can enjoy relate to and love.

This has just brought back my anti-Moffat-ness. I had reached a moderately zen state where since I'd already decided not to watch it I was paying less attention to the reasons why, but it's coming back.

Oh, and let us not forget that little girls need a female character (secondary, of course, haha, female Doctor? What's that?) to identify with. Because no little girl could ever run around with a sonic screwdriver wanting to be the Doctor, noooo...

He should! Even ones that aren't "sexy". RTD writes some fabulous one-off characters. Harriet Jones, Prime Minister; Chan-Tho; Jabe, from the Forest of Cheem! *sigh*

I was too. But every time the man opens his mouth (or someone else does it for him--I was cringing out of my seat when I heard his acceptance speech at the Hugos, read by poor Paul Cornell, of all people!) my hate is renewed. I want to brain the man with something large. It couldn't possibly make him stupider.

Well yes, obviously...

Gods, this is like watching a car crash as everything I love about the show, even and especially my faith in it, is going to die. RTD's ability to write *people* of both (or even "other") genders has touched every aspect of the show, except Moffat and he's going to take it and kill all of those parts off and turn it into something ugly and hateful.

I just...when I think about it makes total sense that I'm not posting about Doctor Who near as much any more and it's not just because Robin Hood is eating my brain. RTD's era has been so touching and wonderful and it's ending. To be replaced by something I don't even want to think about.

I'm trying to avoid spoilers for DT's final appearances as well.

I've not yet made my mind up, as to whether I'll be watching Season 5. I'm sorta leaning towards maybe not as the new Doctor guy interests me so little anyway but we'll see....

Then again, I may well just cling desperately to DT's leg and refuse to let go until he changes his mind and decides to stay.

For me it's not so much that DT's leaving, I can accept that as long as it's done well I guess even though I wish he wouldn't and I know it's going to make me cry. No, I'm leaving because RTD is leaving and Moffat is taking over. I trust RTD's story, and Moffat as a writer and as a person is something I don't want to subject myself too any more.

If DT were leaving but RTD and co staying, I'd be staying to see what happened next. If DT was staying but Moffat taking over I might watch out of loyalty, but without the same passion. DT or not with someone other than Moffat I'd probably give a chance. The way it is, I'm walking away while it's still my show.

Well that's fair enough. I get the disinct feeling that you won't be the only one walking away from this.

You may have seen my thoughts on the matter over at theemptywriter (I don't consider information about a series I don't plan to watch to be spoilers), but to recap:

1. Boys are perfectly capable of identifying with female heroes, as evidenced by the childhood friends who have since gone on to become straight adult males wanting to be Leela;

2. Little boys shouldn't be wanting little girls to be anything, you (Moffat) dirty old skeeve.

3. Moffat is yet one more step down the road to total hypocrisy (re: everything he's said in the past about How Things Would Be If He Were In Charge).

4. I'm torn between 51st Century Princess, Young River Song, and 21st century sweater-folder at Top Shop as to what the character is more likely to be.

I read a decent amount over there, but decided to post about it here I guess.

(I don't consider information about a series I don't plan to watch to be spoilers)

I think that's basically what I was going on. It;s kind of like I sometimes read things about Smallville still even though I stopped watching it like three years agi. Maybe one day I'll watch it, but I don't consider it spoiling myself.

2. Little boys shouldn't be wanting little girls to be anything, you (Moffat) dirty old skeeve.Only Moffat could think boys couldn't think girls could be heroes too. There's a difference between saying that boys will like the character as much as girls (which if it were say RTD I'd be able to hope he meant) and saying that the character will become the standard boys measure girls by. Especially when really, what have they determined about the character besides ( ... )
