Chapter Fourteen

“Listen, you have your assignment,” Tenn said briefly.  “Take it and go.  If anyone higher up gets a whiff of you like this, you’re done.”

Jensen sat at Tenn’s kitchen table, a half-full bottle of Jack Daniels and a shot glass in front of him.  Jensen nodded at Tenn’s words, but couldn’t wipe away the image of Jared, lax from the sedatives, slumped in his seat in the field office.

“I did that to him,” Jensen said for the umpteenth time.  Tenn groaned aloud.

“You saved the kid from who knows what, Ackles,” Tenn reminded him, a little bit tersely.  “He wouldn’t even have the hope of a normal life if you hadn’t stepped in.  You didn’t have to do that.  You’re the fucking hero in this equation.”

“I fucked him,” Jensen admitted for the first time, aloud.  “I didn’t have to do that, Tenn, but I did.  I did it because I wanted to.  I did it because I couldn’t fucking resist.”

Tenn sat silently beside Jensen.  Jensen looked over at him, a mixture of hope and weariness etched on his face.  Tenn knew that if Jensen wasn’t balls deep into a bottle of whiskey, he would never show so much emotion.

“What if I just stick around to see that he adjusts okay, you know?” Jensen asked.  “Maybe spend a bit of time with him.  See how he’s holding up?”

“What would that accomplish?” Tenn asked.

“I don’t know,” Jensen shrugged.  “I just…I don’t know.”

“What would it accomplish?” Tenn asked, his analytical mind working overtime. “You want him to have a normal life?  You want him to get over his ordeal?”

“More than anything,” he vowed fervently, but he was lying.  Selfishly, underneath it all, Jensen wanted Jared tied to a bed, any bed, under his complete and unwavering control.  He wanted Jared helpless and writhing, completely wrapped up in him and the things he could do to him.  In his drunken revelry, that couldn’t be denied.  And no matter how much Jared said that he wanted it, too, Jensen knew that Jared had never really had a choice in the matter.

The best thing - the right thing for him to do, was to let Flannery and the clinic work their magic, stabilize Jared and give Jared a fighting chance at a semblance of normality.  The right thing for him to do was to walk away.

“Jensen,” Tenn said, very quietly.  “Take your assignment and go to Texas.  I’ll fly down in a week or so to check on you.  But you need to go…or you’re going to lose everything.  Do you hear me?”

Jensen nodded.

Jared stared at the stark white wall silently, seemingly relaxed and at ease.  His mind was racing.  He remembered being in that office with Jensen, the panic on Jensen’s face, the helplessness.  It chafed at him.  He didn’t like it one bit.  The Jensen he knew was focused, self-assured and singular in thought and action.

That told Jared everything he needed to know.

Jensen was confused.  Jensen wasn’t certain what to do about him.  He had gotten under Jensen’s skin.  There was no way that what had happened between them had no effect on Jensen.  As hard as Jensen was trying to hold himself back, there had been no mistaking the look in his eyes when he’d walked into the office.  He wanted Jared as much as Jared wanted him. The truth of it all coursed through his veins and Jared knew that nothing could shake it.

All he had to do was help Jensen to face the truth.

One Month Later

“Jared, can you tell me a little more about how you feel about Jensen?” Flannery asked and Jared looked away, throat working calculatingly.

“I don’t know,” Jared said in a well-practiced, sincere tone.  “I don’t really know.  You know, I guess, it makes me feel sick to my stomach that I did all those things and that I let him do that to me, you know.  Like how I felt good about it and everything?  That’s not me.  That’s not who I’ve ever been, you know?”

Flannery nodded.

“So, there’s a part of me that hates him, I guess,” Jared went on.  “And another part that gets it.  He had a job to do…for the government and everything.  And he couldn’t slip up.  But, I guess, I just wish it had never happened.  I guess I wish that I never set eyes on him, you know?”

Flannery made a few notations in his beloved file and Jared sat back against the couch, eyes going to the bright sunlight filtering through the office windows.  He’d spent more time inside this office, playing this game with Flannery than he cared to think about.  But he knew that his goal was a hairsbreadth away and he had every intention of reaching it.

“How do you feel about your future?” Flannery asked.

Jared leaned forward and rested his elbows on his knees, staring hard at the floor before meeting Flannery’s gaze.

“I want to get back in school,” Jared said.  “For sure, I want that.  And I’d like to start working again, too.  I just want things to get back to normal.”

Flannery nodded again and then set his pen aside.

“Well, Jared, you’ve come a long way since you were admitted,” Flannery noted.  “While I think you will face some emotional difficulties in the future, there’s no reason for you to be here any longer.  I know the Bureau’s worked on putting some things together to make your transition back into your regular life easier.  We’ll also set up an outpatient treatment plan for you.  I’ll get all of that information together and maybe some time tomorrow we’ll solidify a release for you.”

Jared worked hard to keep the victorious gleam out of his eye.  He nodded solemnly as his mind raced.  In one day, he’d be free.  And the only plan he had was to find Jensen.
