Application: Ty Lee (Avatar: The Last Airbender)

Aug 04, 2010 20:13

(Checked out with Sokka-mun as per the rules.)
Ty Lee found herself, quite suddenly, in an unfamiliar room of gray stone. Well, this was no good! She'd just gotten out of prison! How was she supposed to be one of the Kyoshi warriors if she was spirited away to... well, to where ever this was? Ty Lee had been hanging around in her own clothes when ( Read more... )

I am not a bloodbender! It's magic!

Yeah, Wishbone's still bitter about that.

"What...? Oh!" Ty Lee said, having needed a moment to locate the speaker. Hey! Talking... um... dog-something! She dropped down into an easy crouch, resting her hands on her knees. "Did someone call you a bloodbender? Isn't that, like, really really rare? You look too nice to be a bloodbender, anyway!"

Yeah! Some mean guy named Sokka. I was just proving that magic was real when he wouldn't believe me when I turned into a cat!

Ty Lee perked up, if it was possible to be any perkier than she'd been before. In some people, such a feat might not have been possible, but she managed it. "Sokka's here? Tall guy, really tan, cute smile?"

Oh, man, if there had to be one Kyoshi warrior to show up, why did it have to be the one who had spent the past couple of months trying to kill him and his friends and not his girlfriend?

"Hi, Ty Lee," he said through a smile and ever-so-slightly gritted teeth. "What brings you here?"

((Hug pre-approved.))
"Sokka!" Ty Lee practically bounced forward to enfold Sokka in a hug, glad to see a friendly - or at least familiar and not outright hostile, not to mention rather attractive - face. After a moment, she pulled back, beaming. "I just met a talking dog-thing - I still think he might have been a spirit - who said this is a magic school! Isn't that cool?"

Sokka froze out of sheer habit, assuming she was about to do all sorts of stabby-pointy things with her fingers and paralyze him, but it was just a hug. "Good to see you, too. I think," he said, hugging her back in a polite and quick and very platonic manner before stepping back. "You met what?! That thing is evil! It's a bloodbender! It made my legs go all freaky, and then it tied me up! Evil dog thing!"

He took a deep breath, and added, "Oh yeah, and this place says it teaches magic, but I'm pretty sure it's just some weird kind of bending that just hasn't been well enough studied yet and is just weird in general. And there's a guy walking around with pointy ears and a tail but he looks human except for that, but he's nice enough. And there's evil people here who are not that stupid bloodbending dog thing."

Ty Lee crossed her arms. "He said you'd been calling him nasty names," she scolded, "but he seemed pretty nice to me! Are you sure you didn't just scare him, so that he thought he needed to defend himself? He's just a little guy!"

She paused, and her manner softened again. "But, um, thanks for the warning, Sokka. I'll try to be careful. I can take care of myself."

"Bend?" Kusuriyuri asked. "This one has heard that term before. And, by chi you do refer to ki?" he added. He stepped into the room. He'd convinced Boukensha to remain in the room for now and he'd left his case in the room as well.

Ty Lee considered for a moment. "I think that might be another word for it, yeah," she finally answered. "Like, a kind of life force that moves through the body in certain ways? It's way showier for benders, because they can use theirs to control their element, but anyone can be disabled by blocking their chi in the right ways."

Kusuriyuri nodded. "Indeed." He tilted his head. "Then, will you have trouble accepting that which is called magic here?" he asked, his eyebrow raised slightly, his tone utterly solemn.

Ty Lee shook her head. "Oh, no. Just because I don't understand how something works is no reason to disbelieve it! I mean, my fr- Princess Azula doesn't believe in auras at all," she continued, hesitating a little over how to refer to the former Fire Lord's daughter; after the whole thing with the betrayal and attacking and imprisonment, Ty Lee supposed that she couldn't really count Azula as one of her friends anymore. "Which I think is kinda silly because she can do all sorts of things with her firebending that most people wouldn't think was possible!"

Road Kamelot propped her chin on her hand as she watched the other girl. "Bend, benders? What are you talking about?"

"You know, people who can control one of the elements?" If this girl didn't know about benders, Ty Lee must be very far from home indeed. Even the places that didn't have many benders of their own knew what they were - the Fire Nation navy had made certain of that.

"I see. Is it something people are born with or can anyone learn how?"

"You have to be born with it," Ty Lee explained. "It's not terribly common - I can't do it, myself."

Oh my God, it's like looking at herself when she arrived. Mel approaches the girl with a sunny smile, but a couple of her answers have the angel on edge. What's 'bending'? 'Bender', she understands, but it doesn't make sense Ty Lee would adjust someone's chi so they'd stop being gay. It's also the reason they had to change the subtitle of the cartoon in the UK

But martial arts? Mel can always use some more moves. So she says "Hey! I'm Mel." And there's a pause, and she asks, in a slightly confused voice, "Um...bending?"

Right. Apparently they didn't have benders here. Ty Lee wondered vaguely if she shouldn't amend her application, but by now there were enough copies of it going around it probably wouldn't do any good. Ah, well. She didn't mind explaining. "It's, like, controlling one of the four elements - someone who can move fire around is a firebender, or someone who can make rocks fly around is an earthbender. Not everyone can do it."

Oooh! In that case, Mel would be an airbender. It's her natural element, after all. She smiles. "Like singing. I get it. Pretty cool. Now." Mel tries to make her expression slightly sterner, but she's not Ty Lee's guardian angel right now, and besides she might be attacked by evil benders (snigger) who need their chi taken away.

"Why'd you block someone's chi? Sounds pretty painful." Or maybe it's like that just for angels. Maybe, in Ty Lee's world, people don't even realise til they try to bend.

Ty Lee shifted a little uncomfortably. "Not really painful, if you do it right, just kind of... uncomfortable? Like it makes them go numb for a few minutes until it wears off." She shrugged. "Anyway, you do not want to go up against someone who can roast or crush or drown you without something to level the field."
