Application: Ty Lee (Avatar: The Last Airbender)

Aug 04, 2010 20:13

(Checked out with Sokka-mun as per the rules.)
Ty Lee found herself, quite suddenly, in an unfamiliar room of gray stone. Well, this was no good! She'd just gotten out of prison! How was she supposed to be one of the Kyoshi warriors if she was spirited away to... well, to where ever this was? Ty Lee had been hanging around in her own clothes when ( Read more... )

"Bend?" Kusuriyuri asked. "This one has heard that term before. And, by chi you do refer to ki?" he added. He stepped into the room. He'd convinced Boukensha to remain in the room for now and he'd left his case in the room as well.

Ty Lee considered for a moment. "I think that might be another word for it, yeah," she finally answered. "Like, a kind of life force that moves through the body in certain ways? It's way showier for benders, because they can use theirs to control their element, but anyone can be disabled by blocking their chi in the right ways."

Kusuriyuri nodded. "Indeed." He tilted his head. "Then, will you have trouble accepting that which is called magic here?" he asked, his eyebrow raised slightly, his tone utterly solemn.

Ty Lee shook her head. "Oh, no. Just because I don't understand how something works is no reason to disbelieve it! I mean, my fr- Princess Azula doesn't believe in auras at all," she continued, hesitating a little over how to refer to the former Fire Lord's daughter; after the whole thing with the betrayal and attacking and imprisonment, Ty Lee supposed that she couldn't really count Azula as one of her friends anymore. "Which I think is kinda silly because she can do all sorts of things with her firebending that most people wouldn't think was possible!"

Kusuriyuri noticed the change, hesitation, though he said nothing about it. "The other that this one has heard use the word 'bending' believes that magic is not possible. He seems to be having issue with this place," he said sympathetically. "It sounds as though you may not find this place too difficult."

"I try to be adaptable," she said with a smile. "I've been dragged off on wild adventures before. I guess I've just learned to go with the flow!"

((Sorry...*headdesk* I have no excuse))

Kusuriyuri nodded. "That does seem a wise policy here," he said. He considered a moment. "You are able to block ki," he said. "Does this mean that you are able to 'bend' things?"

"What? Nah," Ty Lee shook her head. "I'm no bender, I've just got a better idea than most what makes people tick."

"This one thinks that may be more valuable," he said solemnly, teasing her a little. "Do you know one called Sokka?" he asked curiously.

"I know him. Not as well as I'd like to," she said, a little regretfully. "We were kinda on opposite sides of a nasty war until really recently."

"War is a difficult thing, both to live through and for people to avoid," Kusuriyuri said. "How is it the war came to end?" he asked, curious. War was a time when many mononoke formed, as well as those times just after wars.

"Well, the Avatar - he's like this super-bender, who can use all the elements and then some - dueled the Fire Lord," Ty Lee explained. "I think he was calling himself the 'Phoenix King' by then, actually, but anyway... the Avatar defeated him, and then Zuko became Fire Lord and called off the invasion. Well, the whole war, actually. I'm sure there were some people in the Fire Nation that weren't happy about it... but mostly, everyone was really tired of the war and anyway, when the Fire Lord and the Avatar say there isn't gonna be a war anymore, that's kind of it."

"So, those of earth and metal and air followed fire and this Avatar?" Kusuriyuri asked curiously. This wasn't quite what he'd expected, but rarely were people like the elements and balanced as needed.

"Well, there aren't really any other air folks around anymore, 'cause the Fire Nation wiped them all out like a hundred years ago. The Avatar's the only one who can airbend right now. And the Water Tribes are pretty isolated, and the Fire Nation's been raiding them for years, too," Ty Lee said, ticking them off on her fingers. "But yeah, the Water Tribes backed the Avatar, and a lot of people from the Earth Kingdom, too. Earth Kingdom's really the only one that could stand up to the Fire Nation at all. As far as I know, the only person who can bend metal is that little earthbender girl who's buddies with the Avatar, anyway."

She shrugged. "Anyway, the Avatar's kind of supposed to keep everything in balance, and it was the Fire Nation that was throwing everything out of balance."

"How is it that the Fire Nation..." Kusuriyuri blinked. "Ah, this one is being too inquisitive?" he said, waving his hand before him, waving away his curiosity. "It is something he has not had time to learn more of."

"No, it's ok," Ty Lee said. Maybe if he'd pushed a bit more at the politics of the Fire royal family she would have been upset - the whole Azula thing still stung. "I don't mind. It's just a little odd to meet someone who doesn't know all about it."
