Soichiro is taken from when he died, which is five years after L and Light were taken from. He is not aware of this yet, but when he is, he'll try to keep as much from them as possible.

Soichiro also still has his shinigami eyes, meaning he will be able to see a person's true

"Oh, come now. If you're a police chief, then you're not doing your job if you stay out of other people's business," Reilly pointed out idly.

"It's only necessary if it's actually pertinent to the case. Certainly not to the extreme of bugging someone's house without a shred of evidence to go on." True, that. L bugged his entire house and the only thing Soichiro got out of it was that Light looks at porn. Which he would have rather not known.

"Where I'm from the authorities liked to call that a good evening's entertainment," he replied. "They also used a definition of 'pertinent' that was rather...flexible, let us say."

Oh god, it's L. No, seriously, those two would get along good.

"Well. Then. I suppose if that's how you do things, I won't object."

"This isn't the afterlife." Nope, afterlife was nothing, just nothing. Jack knew, he'd seen enough of it. "Doubt you know my name." Because Jack has to be the annoying one whenever possible.

"I do, but for your sake I won't say anything about it. And I think you must be mistaken. I'm dead. I know I died. If this isn't the afterlife, what can it be?"

Jack raised an eyebrow, slightly worried, though he wasn't going to let it be known he was. That name... well he just preferred Jack Harkness a lot more. "Alternate dimension, the past, future..." Jack could ramble on about this. "Personally I'd favor diverging time lines that you might have seemed to have died but the point before it happened you appeared here." He shrugged. "What do I know about that though, I'm still in my world and time, sorta. Though you can trust me about the whole death issue. I've died once or twice too. So afterlife, this isn't it. This has people, things, it's kinda fun sometimes too."

"All right then, if this isn't the afterlife, then what is today's date? I may be able to make more sense of this situation if I know what today is, Mr......"
Well, since he didn't want to be known by that name, there must be something he calls himself.

It just better not be another damn letter.

"Oh, it's all right if you haven't a lot," said Gustav, who'd thrown himself into a nearby chair with his feet propped on a table, looking over a copy of the application he held up in one hand. "I didn't either and they let me in. Isn't the Hokuten, I can tell you that much." He tossed off the term without considering that the applicant might not know what it meant. Gustav was getting better about that the longer he was gone from Ivalice, but he continued to make slips.

"So what's my name, then?"

((Full name is Gustav Margueriff, spelling may vary. Also, Hokuten means "north sky" or something similar, if he'd pick that up))

That's how it appeared to Soichiro. And there was no lifespan under his name. Soichiro didn't think it was because Gustav had a Death Note. There had to be a reason his name was crossed out.

"Gustav....are you perchance, dead like I am?"

Gustav's feet slid from the table with a thump as he straightened up. "That something else you can tell looking at me? Do I look dead? Rotting and that?"

Cool, he got it right!

"No. It's just that, your name is crossed out. And there's no lifespan under your name. There was only one reason there would be a missing lifespan, but the shinigami that gave me these eyes said nothing about crossed out names."

Given that Ryuk gave him the eyes, and it's known that Ryuk doesn't know every rule of shinigami, it's quite plausible he didn't know about crossed names.

"To be honest, I was guessing. By your reaction, I'm correct?"

"Is that a pseudonym, or is it a coincidence that your last name is 'I'm a gay' backwards?"

It's inevitable. Someone would bring that up.

"It is purely a coincidence, Yamamura-san."

Not that it wasn't obvious because SHE'S A GHOST, but her name also came up in the format for the dead: Sadako Yamamura.

"There are wise men who would say there is no such thing as coincidence. I take it you don't agree?"

There are also wise women who say that. But that isn't the point.

"It is purely a coincidence." He repeated with a glare.

A police chief, huh? This would be amusing. And he could see people's real names. He thought it would be worth a try. "Hello, Officer. My name is Edward Elric. It's good to meet you, sir."

"Edward Elric?" He said with a mild hint of suspicion in his voice. "Funny way of spelling it, if you ask me."

Not outright calling Russel a liar, but letting him know he knows that Russel's a liar."

"Well, more or less." He shrugged. "What makes you think you're in the afterlife?"

"Because I remember being shot and dying, Mr. Tringham." Something about this man's character was shady. Soichiro didn't like that.
