Removing gasoline odors from clothes/car interior

Mar 01, 2006 22:46

so in the hopes of being prepared for emergencies, i got a 2 gallon gasoline tank, filled it, and put it in my trunk. today while i was driving, i heard the gas tank roll around in the trunk, and by the time i got back to work, i was so high from fumes i was shaking and dizzy.

bottom line is that the tank is leaking, presumably from the cap area. i've contained the gas can itself in a garbage bag for now, but my trunk now smells strongly of gas, and at times it travels into the cabin area of the car.

i could've sworn i've read solutions to this before, but i checked the memories and didn't find it. the overnight bag i had in my trunk is now being washed in the clothes washer. but how do i get the smell out of the interior of my trunk? i thought i'd tie an air freshener to the glow pull handle in the roof of my trunk, but i'm hoping to find a way to remove the odor, not just mask it.

note: there's no visible spill of gasoline; the interior is dry, but the seam of the plastic gas can was a little damp when i took the can out.

ETA: as much fun as it is to be called a fucking moron over and over, i appreciate the at-the-very-least neutral suggestions/comments. i was always told that the gas cans were to keep gas in in an emergency. to me, if i'm stranded 30 miles from a gas station (which i very well could be on my way to work), it seems odd to have an empty spare gas can. now that i've heard other uses/explanations/reasons for it, i get it, thanks. hostility helps no one.
