I'm not for sure myself, but I googled it and found this, it might be worth a try.

Please remove the gas from your trunk. That is an incredibly bad, dangerous thing to do. Ever see the signs at gas stations warning about how gas is flammable? They are there for a very good reason. AAA recommends against this practice, as does anyone else I have ever encountered.

Seconded. That practice is asking for an emergency, not preventing one.

Take the can out of the bag. That's not really doing any good.
I've never tried it, but this site (found with a simple google for "removing gasoline smell") has several suggestions.
The gas can is a good idea, if you keep it empty. Then you can fill it up with gas at a station when you need it and take it back to your car.
Or you can get a AAA membership and the nice men in the tow truck will help you.

they have a product that you can usually find at places like Wal-mart and Schucks that is emergency gas - its a small container of a fluid - ask they can help you. Also, make sure that can is vented and stored in an open area.

If it is what I have, it does work nicely, but it will not start a cold engine. Of course, gas that has been in your trunk 6 months probably will not either. That, at least, is tightly sealed.

I'd park my car with the trunk open on a warm sunny day and try and get as much sunlight in the trunk as you can, evaporate it all. A day or two of that and it should not be a huge issue any more, though I would not be suprised if you smell it when you open your trunk for some time to come.

True, but where I live, if you run out of gas, well, you're pretty much in the middle of no where unless you are in Anchorage, then you can walk to a gas station. I also refuse to go below a quarter of a tank of gas too, after I ran out while driving at 9 months pregnant in the middle of winter. I guess we all have our life lessons. :)

hopefully the smell clears out for the original poster.
